I've slept on it and feel worse about our start to the season.

Peck needs a break from the starting 11 and we NEED to bring another CDM alongside Tanganga, Mee, a RB and an established RW. You know what a LW winger too, so RS can stop playing players out of position and hanging them out to dry.

Hopefully the rumours of Billing are true and we can pull it off. Or at the very least have plan B very much in motion.

In terms of reflection, if you bring in a new manager now at least they'll get a couple of days to approve signings 🤷‍♂️ But it just seems madness that we are even having the conversation.

It’s bordering on embarrassment that we would be having a conversation 3 games into a 46 game season and are already heading down the Watford rabbit hole of sacking managers

So the players clearly can’t handle a change of style and tactics so you want to sack a manager and bring in another new guy

And this new manager, you are going to give him a set of players whom he might not even personally want himself and then what ?? You are then still left with the reality of you might need 3-4 windows anyway

Reality is folks that we are not the Liverpool/man city or Real Madrid of this league, last season both Leeds and Burnley were consistently better than us for the entire season and it’s time to put your big boy and girl pants and admit that we wilted under the pressure when we had the advantage down the final straight and we wilted in that final v Sunderland

Chris wilder is a legend, he deserves a statue for what he has done here and his time here will live with everyone of us but this shitting the bead panic and let’s go back to him or something similar because it’s a comfort blanket is zero guarantee of anything, yes we got over 90 last season but nothing to say that we get near that or that there are not 2-3 teams clearly better than us again

Is Selles the man ?? Non of us have a clue, I voted no to sacking him as IMO it needs time but I have no idea why he chooses to play both Cannon and Campbell together and then puts cannon on wing instead of Campbell, it’s decisions like this that will see fans drive him out

Giving him the window to bring players in and see where we are in Oct/nov is the only real move here because the most likely result is it’s just another football version of Groundhog Day, if it’s Clearly not working by then then give new guy the Jan window to keep us up

A new guy in January to keep us up? Really? This is our last parachute payment and the last chance to steal a march on the pack. The board have fucked up on a massive scale with a totally inept manager. It’s not panicking to admit you’ve made a massive mistake and get the appointment right before the season is a washout

Lost all 4 games with a goal difference of -6.

That’s a pretty low bar for not bad 🤣

We’re below Wednesday. The club who are barely have any senior players, almost had one of their stands condemned and whose supporters are currently carrying plastic SWFC coffins around.

“not bad” is an odd assessment thus far.

It’s 3 weeks into a season, a season with at least 4 or 5 teams with bigger spending power than ourselves, even with parachute payments

And we couldn’t steal a match last season with parachute money

So I’m not sure this steal a March scenario was ever realistic with all due respect

I’m all for hearing getting the new guy in and getting it right but unfortunately there is never a realistic answer to how you get it done, just some unrealistic name out there who probably would have turned us down in summer

The season literally started two weeks ago. Are we that reactive and impatient at S2 these days?

Bad start, but 43 games left. Teams have stormed to the playoffs from the lower regions of the table in a matter of months in this league.

We would need to get the new manager lined up first. Not just sack without that.

I'm struggling to see how it works with him though.

Cannon and One as wingers too. Just doesn't work. Hamer really not involved enough in attacking areas. It's tough to work out who works well in this system.
Barry maybe?

Reckon we will lose the next 2 anyway and that might be it. He's got a massive task on where he needs to win one of these.

Just like when they sacked Wilder, I said we needed a plan. We needed to have things in place for improvement on what we had.

Appointing Selles, whilst being declared as a 'Culture Setter'(whatever that is), came in with no substance. Not Selles, but the decision to appoint him. There should have been a wider plan for the way that we were going to try and change things, but there was nothing in place for when we made this change. Therefore, Selles has been hung out to dry before he even started.

Added to that, something which was also a big part of Wilder being sacked, was that the owners wanted and perhaps needed to reduce the wage bill and recoup some fees for the likes of Souza and Anel, which was decided before Selles arrived. Again, Selles has had to deal with this.

The failure to recruit a single permanent signing before 3rd week of August is almost criminal in recruitment terms, bringing in loanees from overseas and lacking experience at this level signals something being very wrong in the way we do business.

Finally getting in new players now is a positive but it hasn't helped Selles at all to be so light on resources as well as seeing more players leave than arrive. Its the reality of missing promotion, but also not the only reason we are where we are. Thats what has brought us to even considering a change of manager...

I voted maybe / not sure as i think now that we're starting to see players come in, especially defensive players, Selles needs to be given some time to work with them. 9 points off the leaders at this stage of the season isn't a time to panic, but it has increased pressure, needlessly. Selles gets himself a buffer because of the entire clubs failure to recruit (of which he will surely take some responsibility as he has also shown inexperience to not understand the capabilities of the players we have or the ones he's also brought in)

The big question and worry though is Selles himself and his failure to set the team up properly from the first game against Bristol City. I said on another thread that this division is about being organised first, after that, do what you want, but be organised.

He's not been structured with or without the ball, passing pretty little patterns is fine, but when you lose the ball with your midfield so high and being the otherside of the ball to press, you've already lost. We're disconnected and have no structure to the side, regardless of the formation.

So for now, its not about the new players coming in and settling, the focus has fallen directly onto Selles. 3 games and he has no organisation in the side, he doesn't have a leader, he doesn't have a spine and he has abandoned players working hard to get back into a shape when we lose the ball. Theres barely a shape with the ball.

He has Brooks and Barry as the two recognised wingers, but plays One and Cannon. Neither are wingers.

Not yet for me but I can't see him lasting at this point.

I feel like his hand needs to be forced a bit.

Not something I want to happen but if Hamer left this week for example, you end up with the same formation but with soumare and peck and ohare. That's a more more balanced midfield. Oh are has the energy and the press to do what he is needed to. Hamer doesn't,but you can't drop him as he is our best player on paper.

There also appear to be no leaders in this team. No one is on the pitch grabbing them and saying let's take control of this situation.

Godfrey sounds like he was.... OK.

Tanganga assuming he isn't laughing whilst tearing up the agreement would make a big difference.

I wonder if we play mccallum at LB and Burrows plays further forward. He will provide more cover than Barry and it gets him further up the pitch.

From preseason, I understood the basics of the plan. The players just seem to have given up trying to implement it and they all know they are pretty much undroppable as there's no one else on the bench (other than Cannon who just seems to be a disappointment anywhere he plays)

Finish the transfer window and bring in a few more bodies, if that doesn't happen then this is all on the board anyway,

Looked a strange appointment and it’s clear that it isn’t working. Can’t see what he is trying to do. Players aren’t having him, fans aren’t having him and rarely do managers turn that around. Every chance we will be going into the Charlton home game on a run of 5 defeats, i think he will get to that point but if we lose that day then that will be it

COH, the summer transfer window, Selles appt is the biggest screw up of a generation. We are almost at the point where we have blown the advantage of the £40 million parachute payment! If we don’t go up it will be a very different situation financially next summer. And after the 3?seasons in the Premier League and all that money - maybe circa £400 million parachute+…..what will be the legacy of all that? Yes ground looks decent, but no new training ground , no new Academy built , no Cat 1 status!

It’s not about sacking the manager 3 games in, it’s about the new owners making bad decisions one after another. Giving Wilder a new deal then sacking him, appointing a smooth talking manager with buzz words who had just had our pants down in a fluke win, not understanding transfer rules for forrin signings etc..

Sellés looks the part sounds the part but clearly isn’t getting anything out of a decent crop of players. I was baffled by an earlier thread on formations but more baffled with what I saw on the pitch. Apart from Cooper between the sticks I just don’t understand where players are supposed to be playing. What’s more worrying is they don’t appear to know.

Clearly given the windmill antics of Sellés arms ont sideline the players aren’t where he wants them to be. I’ve never seen a manager point so much which way we are supposed to be kicking, he even outdoes McCall.

3 subs all Accademy products, yes they deserve their chance but not 4 on the pitch at the same time and a young loanee CB with Soumane and Ukaki on the bench. And playing Cannon as a right winger with Campbell looking like he’s pi55ed off at having to play 90 mins to earn his full wage.

Yes 3 games is too soon to sack a capable manager trying to bed a team into his way of playing but not when it’s looking obvious they hired someone way out of their depth. The new owner learning curve is proving painful but hopefully not catastrophic. We could mirror S6 if we’re not careful.

The next big mistake COH can make is to bring Wilder back in any capacity.

But what do I know, I support the Blades?

Get him out now, things are not going to change. There is no ray of light in the way he plays so may was well make the break sooner rather than later when it's too late.
Thats all well and good, but whats the plan if we sack him? We've set on a path to change the playing style and culture at the club, a bold move this summer, so what next? Get Hecky back? Wilder? Bassett? Billie Sharpe? Promote Del Geary?

I am inclined to agree that Selles might not be capable, isn't up to the job and never was, but what we do next is also key.

I've seen people clamouring for Cooper, Dyche, but without any sort of clue which way the owners want to take the club, its hard to make the call to sack Selles

The players are winding me up at the minute, they just don’t look interested. I heard people saying that they don’t look like they know what they’re doing in the system, well that’s just a bullshit excuse to me. They’re paid enough to play the system and know how it works.

I get attacking wise, there are tactics and plays, but defending is defending, it doesn’t change, so why the fuck can’t they defend?! Also if they’re that stubborn that they “can’t” play his system going forwards, they know how to play football and what works ffs.

Finally, one of my biggest gripes is the lack of leadership in the team, I watched our “captain” quite a lot today. He’s normally vocal and getting them going, he did none of that today, he’s got a CB partner who is young and has had his confidence clearly knocked and not once did his captain and partner offer any guidance. The guy is toxic and needs to be out of the club, sign Ben Mee ASAP
Agreed, I think its got a lot to do with Robinson!

If you make a change, you make a change for the better. Or else you don’t make a change.

What you don’t do is have some random punt based on hardly any track record whatsoever, which is what has happened.

Good post.

I wonder if Selles actually picks the formation entirely. I'm absolutely certain ai is being used to influence it, and he's under a degree of pressure to follow that.

I’m not sure you can argue it’s a random punt

Last season as soon as we got into pole position wilder and the team collapsed, in the final against Sunderland second halve as soon as Sunderland started to gain control it was over, it was just a case of could Moore and defence hold out

So it needed changing, myself personally I think Wilder realised the scope of it during the run in when we wilted and when the board suggested how they wanted to address it he realised and wanted no part of it

So yeh I think you can question was it the right move to make but to argue it’s a punt you really need to be sure that other more experienced managers were lining up for the job and you need to be 100% sure that they had another approach to use with these managers and only decided to go with selles and this new approach just on a whim

At this point anything is possible I guess

Sack the new manager after 3 games, then the new new manager after 2 games, and so on until we have a new manager getting sacked after not performing on his first day at the training ground.

Im very disgruntled by all this, can you tell?!?

Just about lol 😂

I’m afraid there’s no doubt in my mind, he will be sacked before Christmas. It always was a strange and risky appointment, and it has become immediately apparent that he’s out of his depth.
The question is, do they do it now, or wait until further and further ground is lost, before doing it?
I take no pleasure in suggesting someone should be sacked, but my take is, give him a couple more games, and if there is no more visible signs of improvement, pull the trigger before it’s way too late.

Obviously talked a good game to inexperienced gullible owners. However when all he’s got left in his management skills is to do the “Kevin Keegan” breathe deep and put your chest out gesture from the technical area, you know he’s got nothing left to contribute. That was out of the Mickey Adams coaching manual.

Interview afterwards was pure Adkins. Full of technical process bollocks which sounds knowledgeable but is just waffle and doesn’t resonate with footballers who want and need a more basic understanding of what the plan is and what they should do. Quite a few of them must have been thinking yesterday “cannot this clown see we’re struggling here and need to make some changes”? But no. Same “plan” but with different wingers, two of whom weren’t wingers.

Reminds me of Weir. Very nice man. Tactics all fine and dandy in theory but absolutely suicidal if you just happen to be playing football against another professional championship team who will fight scrap and bully you all game.

So, reminiscent of Adams , Adkins and Weir. They worked well for us eh?

Much as I derided Wilders obvious weaknesses and arrogance, he was at least a footballer and not a data analyst. Selles hasn’t a clue and isn’t fit to lace his boots.

Unfortunately for Selles I think he’s walked straight into controversial situation before a ball was kicked. If the Wilder tenure had ended in a mid-table obscurity season, I think we’d all be on the same page in wanting a change of manager.
But we were a competitive team who were easily the third best in the league last season and with a little bit more luck with injuries could won the damned thing.
So when we’d all got over the Wembley debacle, I think most Blades fans were all strapped in and ready to go for one more Wilder season and I also think the players were all on board with this too…Then we dropped bomb, and I think the majority of us just couldn’t understand why.
I personally got on board with Selles, but I can now see how taking over a reasonably successful team can be much harder for a new manager to put his stamp on things.
