Short Goal Kicks

They have their place and I can see it working for us, but it seems to be that they’ve been told they have to do it every time, so all autonomous thought has gone out the window. There’s a time and a place for just booting it, including a few times yesterday at Bournemouth.

To be fair these players have had all and any autonomous thought driven out of them over the last few years

From watching football recently I thought the laws had changed and you had to take goal kicks to someone in the box I noticed our under 23s doing it as well. The worse ones are when the defender takes the kick to the keeper and then he just wangs it What is that all about?
Firstly, I think the rule was brought in to speed up the game, but it most likely hasn't. Your reference to the FB taking the kick to the GK, as long as the opposition aren't pressing, is a crafty time waster, the FB having faffed about in the first place than passes to the GK who unless pressed has the ball in play at his feet and under no pressure to kick it, another time waster is the GK to set up to do that then change his mind wave everyone upfield, then mutter fooled all you assholes as he kicks it.

There’s nothing wrong with playing it out from the back, but it shouldn’t be compulsory. When it’s our only tactic it’s predictability allows the opposition to just press high up the pitch. Our back four and particularly Olsen don’t look confident using the tactic. I agree that we need to vary it a bit during games, knocking it long doesn’t have to mean aimlessly ‘booting it’ down the middle. Surely every player, Olsen included, should be able to pass the ball forty yards to someone stood in space in a red and white shirt?

Interestingly I have noticed that quite often someone has to pass it back to Olsen giving him little choice but to put his foot through it. This results in us picking up the second ball and getting through on goal, which is exactly how we took the lead at Bournemouth.

I think there’s an element of snobbery about the tactic, fans like to see themselves and their team as football purists, playing the game how it should be played. Well that’s all very well if you’ve got the playing staff to do it successfully, we haven’t and consequently I believe we need to vary our tactics occasionally

Watch the goalies at City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester. 1st thing they look at when they have possession is the fast long ball to a teammate on the halfway line on either wing such as Vardy, Mane, Sterling, de Bruyne etc. (not just a big boot). Receiving player then breaks over halfway line with others streaming forward down the middle to look for his pass (not lumpy cross). Many goals are scored within 3 or 4 passes from the goalie now. It's how Bayern, Borussia, Atletico and others came up with a way to beat the tikka takka football of Barcelona and Real, and its now rife in the Prem. The slow build up from the back is now only done if the fast option is not on.......

Tactic works when you’ve got defenders very comfortable on the ball , the keeper initially passes it early , the ball is moved quickly & a midfield showing quickly to receive the ball & again move quickly through the lines …. None of these that we have in our ranks currently or tactics we employ… not a good tactic with current personnel !

Nor is a long ball forward. The problem at the moment is that we’re not a football side or a set of big horrible bastards. We have no identity.
