This has no effect what-so-ever on any future expansion of the stadium and despite accusations to the contrary is part of the masterplan which was drawn up about 6 years ago to ensure any development is done in cohesion with any other short or long term ambitions for development of both the stadium and the surrounding land.

Multi occupency student flats are generally around 15-20sqm in area per room with shared ammenity space so they are also far from 'lowest quality'
every now and then a post like this comes along and you can feel the heat from the embarassed drama queens who seem to have become mentally disturbed by the emotional trauma of being a blade
man up lads

Did you design them Presty?
As anyone who has sat there knows, the kop is sub-standard and uncomfortable. For this reason, any expansion of the kop should replace the existing 'mound' and its no knee-room seating or it does the fans an injustice.
So the masterplan looks less than masterful to me.

I work for the practice that did but that particular design isn't my work.

Thats probably a fair point but was dismissed outright by virtue of it doubling the build cost. The 'extension' part would subject to current design regulation so would be superior to the 'old' in terms of leg room and rake.

At the time the kop extension was a real prospect but I dont see it happening any time soon.

I'm signing up for one of these places. Then who will be laughing when we win our 2038 bid for the World Cup/European doofrywhatsit.

Exactly, a cut-price solution, like so many others so is there really a masterplan at all?

Obviously I think the flat designs are of no merit. Aren't ownership issues likely to blight any future plans for the stadium, for instance if the club DID want to properly redevelop the kop by razing the old mound of earth and building a modern facility that DID include accommodation (commercial or residential) beneath the seats, wouldn't the presence of these little flats jeopardize the granting of any new planning application for a new stand?
Sustainable is a buzz-word these days isn't it? the whole thing seems unsustainable.

The extension to the kop is not just a continuation of the same old crap that we currently have. Exactly what you describe as desirable is already planning approved inclusive of undercover concourses, offices and commercial and retail units fronting shoreham street.

You can see the flats in question in the top left of the bottom left image.

To be fair to KM (grits teeth) the original designs and plans were hatched at the zenith of his reign - Europe in 5 years et al. Discounting all the sleight of hand subsequent ownership manoevres, even if he were still "the best thing ever to happen to this club etc etc" they would be no longer appropriate for a third tier team with spare room for 13/14000 SCF's.

Well I agree Raul, though I thought these plans date from well after our day in the sunlit uplands of the premiership. For me the idea of plonking 6000 (or whatever) new comfortable seats above 11000 bad ones is stupid, it is literally quantity beating quality. Who's to say that they won't even ban seating like the sort we already have on the Kop in years to come on grounds of safety anyway? It takes too long to get out of there doesn't it I and cannot see new exits on the drawings; Presty?
It occurs to me that one of the reasons Bramall Lane wasn't chosen for the World Cup bid was just that, people saw through the 'build it and they will come' graphic rhetoric, took one look at the kop (or sat down in it) and thought, no we cannot have this. I don't want to open the can of worms about fan parks, councillors' allegiances etc. but I know a bad bit of architecture when I see one.

The Kop is the cheapest nastiest stand of its size this side of the iron curtain. But I can't believe it had any sway whatsoever in the World Cup bid.

I was sad (interested) enough to read the planning documents earlier and I think the original "multi-occupancy flats with shared space" plan was rejected. These are standalone studios for single people, I think.

The value of these is stated as £50K each. Is that realistic?
Any idea on how much it will cost to build them?
It could be a nice little earner for somebody but who? United?

They will only make money if people live in them.
Whats the rental market like these days?
This is McCabes baby for sure.

Looking at the space reserved for "future expansion of Valad stand" I wonder whether there's the potential, should United ever get to that stage, of rotating the pitch through 90 degrees and creating a new Kop where the South Stand is now. That would allow the Bramall Lane end to be expanded forward as there's currently no chance of that being extended (unless it bridged Bramall Lane itself).

Pipe dreams I know.

Don't you think that we are struggling enough to play on the pitch that we currently have....

But thinking about it... it might've helped a few of our players over the years - Cotterill, Nosworthy, Beesley all managed to find the South Stand end instead of the kop end!

The other weekend Hartlepool were upset because the were charged £20 to park the team bus outside the ground. They were charged because Balram Chainrai had ownership the carpark separately to the club.

Pompey - a warning from history!

** wait's for a 'top stuff' **

It was Carlisle, and the Administrators (Trevor Birch, basically) levied the charge.

Fonz,

Can we have a "fail" button please?
