As a point of order, the thread asks if it’s misogynistic rather than sexiest. The former term implies hatred so is too strong here. But the lyric is certainly sexist.

It’s also notable that nobody has replied saying they’re offended by it. It gets sung, some people skip it, some don’t. Some think it’s inappropriate, some don’t.
It is a bit confusing because different terminology is used throughout, but the OP’s opening line is:

There's a discussion in the GCB thread about whether or not the third stanza of Shoreham Boys is sexist.

I was amused by the idea of someone putting the argument that the line in question isn’t sexist. I agree there‘s a more valid debate as to whether it’s misogynistic.

Misogynistic = Hatred towards women
Sexist = showing prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination.

For me it's neither as it doesn't fall in either category. "Outdated views" yes - you don't have to go back that far when discriminatiory chants were sung against clubs from certain areas. Although maybe 15 years now since chants against Bradford.

I vote 'Yes and embarrassing'

Mostly embarrassing though, because the people who sing it proudly are literally singing their wank fantasies in public. I would posit that literally nobody who sings it proudly actually gets laid on a regular basis with women on an away day. Not consensually anyway.

I'd also add that shagging your women is a really fucked up metric for anything

Not sure if it's technically misogynist now that I think about it, but it is 100% retarded. Literally sung by people who have no idea how to satisfy a woman.

I just think girls and women should be allowed to go to football games without feeling intimidated or scared.
Ultimately everyone should be welcomed and allowed to go without feeling intimidated or scared. It's not a battlefield or even watching people on the same paygrade as us. Billy Sharp's monthly wage will be more than the vast majority of yearly wages for our fans and he is getting 20-25 mins a match at the moment.

Me too, but if they really feel intimidated by a load of blokes singing a meaningless song then again, maybe football's not for them.

I think it’s sexist, if I went into work and sang that song, I’m pretty sure HR would be having a conversation with me!

do you not think a load of drunk and coked-up men singing songs about shagging women while no doubt leering at any girls or women in the vicinity is intimidating? Or should they just grow a pair?

If you go to a women's football game the atmosphere is very different. Largely because said drunk and coked up men aren't there.

Very true its about context, I personally don't sing but that me and my mates. However agreed I wouldnt have a career if I was singing that at work.

It's a song, an old meaningless football song and I can't say I've ever seen it aimed specifically at any females in the vicinity. 'Get your tits out for the lads' I'll grant you but no, I personally think you're being over sensitive and falling into the trap of being outraged for the sake of being outraged.

Oh and I wouldn't be caught dead at women's football, I think it's terrible, but each to their own.

It’s a tricky one because if you judged everything in terms of how you would act in everyday life then the atmosphere at matches would probably be non existent. So swearing in songs is ok for me, but non football fans might not like it.

I think any song that potentially makes someone feel like they don’t belong at football shouldn’t be sung anymore.

Unless you’re a Viking. It’s a pretty good metric for Vikings. They love it.

It's a threat

Are you really trying to tell me that the song means 'look out fans from other football clubs, we're going to arrive in your towns or cities, frequent your best ale establishments and then charm women with our charisma'?

Or does it mean 'we're taking your beer and your women'

robbie lad you are making yourself look a right tit 😂

I don't find it offensive and doubt any lass I know would either.

You can guarantee in this day and age with the ever growing blizzard of snowflakes someone will. Especially considering if there's nothing to complain about people will actively look for something to find offensive.

Tbh I find it astounding that words .can offend people so much anyway - basically you are getting upset over a vibration in a voice box producing a certain sound 😂

HAHAHA, a threat 😱😱😱

Tell you what it means. Nothing! Absolutely nothing. It's a song, a quirky little song and that's it. If anybody feels genuinely threatened by it, they need help, and I'm being serious, they need to see someone qualified who can help them or they'll never leave home.

I'm old and used to go all over the shop watching us, many's the time we were surrounded by the locals belting out 'you're gonna get your fucking head kicked in' and that was a tad intimidating. Never stopped me and like minded souls going though and that's the difference, you're all fucking soft now. You're outraged by songs, jokes, throwaway comments, anything that you can cry about you will. How sad.

robbie should have been around in the early 70's and worked in the Cutlery industries those buffer lasses would have had his pants down in 2 secs and that was in the queue to get chips n fish for dinner in the chippy at the bottom of Howard st. Poor lad don't know the meaning of intimidating 🤣

Shag your women alludes to conquest, the victorious aggressor takes the spoils of war "etc"

It's all well and good until you conquer Rotherham United, and the often conquered women do things to you that would make your eyes water..
Exactly, It's an invasion song like the vikings used to sing. I've not really got problems with it. Much worse gets sung both at the lane and elsewhere

Ever been raped while you were on your travels?

On the subject of football singing, watching the Dingle Derby the other night I could hear the “shit on the bastards below” song being sung. I always thought it was just us that sang this?

If I had the wings of a sparrow
The dirty black arse of a crow
I’d fly over Hillsborough tomorrow
And shit on the bastards below….below…
Shit on… and so on

Must be more widespread than I thought
This one's been sung everywhere but much less in recent years
