Sheffield.....

It annoys me just because it is a totally unidentifiable tag. It means absolutely nothing to us as fans, really. We’re united, the other lot are the pigs. The city we both happen to be in is Sheffield.

Alternatively it fucks people off because they look beyond the Sheffield post code and see it as disrespectful because know one goes around calling Manchester United, Manchester..
No but they call them "United" which is annoying.

Commentators have had to correct themselves live on air before when Man Utd play Newcastle, Leeds, West Ham etc.

The longer we can stay in the Premier league, the less the media, pundits and other fans will call us Sheffield…Simply as that really.

The original names of the teams in Sheffield were:-

Sheffield
Hallam
The Wednesday
The United

When anyone says United I always say “Do you mean The United or Manchester?”

As the World’s First, Sheffield Club have quite a lot of international members. A top half finish this season - and a new stadium to come - they’ll soon be on their way up and passing The Wednesday on their way down!

Let’s Go Sheffield
Let’s Go Club

Blades & Club - fantastic way to support football in Sheffield every weekend.

Shout it loud - Our City is The Home of Football.

Harvesting some easy likes.

A friend gets annoyed when I call Plymouth Argyle just Plymouth. I've tried to change. I didn't think there was anything wrong with that as they're a one City club. But they only call themselves Argyle.

Nobody calls Man Utd or Man City just "Manchester". Ever. Which is the most obvious and relevant point. Personally think it makes the person saying "Sheffield" look clueless about football and/or clueless about how to talk.
I used to call Man U Manchester all the time. Obviously now things have changed and City are more relevant.

The difference between Manchester and Sheffield is that there's no club (as far as I know) called Manchester FC, but there is a Sheffield FC.

Why call Sheff Utd "Sheffield" if you're not going to call Man Utd "West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC"?

Lazy, and disrespectful to the oldest club in the world.

It's the same with Bristol City. I try and remember to add the City when talking about the more successful of the two teams but almost inevitably just call them Bristol and their reaction is the same as ours.

The Manchester conundrum is easy: just refer to them by their original name of Newton Heath.
A million percentage this. Living in Bristol it pisses me off when people refer to Rovers or City as ‘Bristol’ but lots of blades who hate being called Sheffield do it on here. Rovers are my second team so it annoys me more.

The bit I find annoying is when we play Man United....I've heard commentators initially STILL refer to Man Utd as "United"
They have to correct themselves and start referring to the teams as "Manchester United" and "Sheffield United"

but the occasional "United" slips in to the commentary when they refer to Man Utd.

It is extremely prevalent here in Northern Ireland where there is a big Manchester united following. Driving to work yesterday the radio ulster sports report constantly referred to Man UTD as united.

No, they refer to themselves as United, which boils my piss. I had a barney the other night with an entitled Man U wanker. " which United", I said, " Sheffield, Oxford, Peterboro" ? Fucking Newton Heath. And breathe..............

I refer to the Blades as United as well. It seems to wind man United fans up for some reason like they have a copyright on it.

I tend to follow it up with “the original United”

The Sheffield thing has always wound me up, it’s fairly irrational. But we are Sheffield United, it’s our identity and it’s something I’m proud of as it sets us apart from other Sheffield clubs and other Uniteds

It shouldn’t wind us up, but football is tribal.

On Radio 5, the day after Spurs had lost heavily at Newcastle, there was a discussion, about Spurs ( the presenter was a Spurs fan). He had a Spurs and Newcastle fan on. The presenter and the Spurs fan were discussing where it went wrong for Spurs, and the both kept referring to the Sheffield cup game, more than once it was referred to as the Sheffield game. That boiled my piss, I was shouting at the bloody radio, it was the Sheffield United or simply the United Game…….. bloody disrespectful. Southern Gits

It’s honestly never bothered me. In fact I like the fact that when someone says Sheffield everyone knows it’s United they’re talking about and not some insignificant club from a bygone era in S6.
Fair enough it could be seen as disrespectful to Sheffield FC but I don’t see it as disrespectful to us unless we’re playing Newton Heath.

Why do people get so het up over being referred to as Sheffield.

For me, it's a compliment, there's only one team in Sheffield so everyone knows who the person is referring to.

Let's be honest, outside of England, nobody has even heard of a fucking Sheffield Wednesday if they're under 30 years old.
I completely agree. Hope we’re not embarrassed by some twerps writing to Gary Lineker complaining about him calling us « Sheffield » as they did three years ago

Don't think we were ever officially 'The United'. The football club came out of Sheffield United Cricket & Athletic club. Supposedly there was also a Plymouth United that had a football club before us, though Sheffield United as an entity predates that
But referring to us as Sheffield shows a lack of understanding of the game's history. Yes, we ARE the only club in the top divisions in Sheffield. But to refer to us as that disregards Sheffield FC

The reasont they say "Sheffield" instead of "Sheffield United" in circumstances when there can't be any confusion, is because it's shorter. There is no more reason to keep repeating both halves of the name of the club than there is to keep saying "Billy Sharp" rather than just "Sharp" in a Sheffield commentary - because there is no danger of confusing him with Lee Sharpe, or Tom Sharp, or Sharpe played by Sean Bean. If it's important to use both names to avoid confusion, then they do; if it isn't, they use shorthand.

I like that we think this is important, because football is tribal, it's about identity, where you're from, and who you are. There aren't many two club towns/cities (us, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Bristol, Birmingham, Stoke, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee are about it I think), and it's not exactly hard to sort this in your head if you have a basic knowledge of football and it's history. The problem is that the media and a load of other people think that football started in 1992, so weird shit like Wednesday/United, Rovers/City, Hibs/Hearts are completely lost on them, and they think the differences don't matter. "It's just Sheffield/Nottingham/Bristol". It's chuffin not, and it does matter!!!

Luton fans calling us “Sheffield” in their previews, and now JustPark calling the city Sheffiled
