1993 was Sheffield Deaf's first season in the Norton League. Did you play for Richmond?
I played in that League a few years before for Shiregreen Congregationals, home pitch was Colley Park. We once played Caribbean who had a rather fast (even for them bowler) he was a bit erratic, his name? Devon Malcolm

There was a team in that League with mainly Asian players and one year we rocked up to play them in Graves Park (strangest pitches ever - square leg one side your feet were level with the batsman's head, other side it was your head level with their feet!), they absolutely hammered us, turned out they'd got 8 ex Pakistan internationals playing who were over visiting family.

My other favourite memory from that League was when we drafted my brother in as we were short (he wasn't really a cricketer), we played up at Whirlow Park. He hit a huge straight drive back over me at the non strikers end cleared the car park and went about 20 yards into the field, his face was a picture when I told him there was a no 6 rule in that League

He also played for Sheffield Utd CC !

In fact, after he retired from the first class game, SUCC asked him to come back as pro and captain for the Yorkshire League side. Utd were desperate at the time. Dev politely declined.

There was a photo of him getting Boycott bowled. I remember seeing it in the SUCC clubhouse at Bawtry Road

Played against George Long at a school footy match. Went through on goal and he pulled out an extraordinary save.

Yes indeed !

And I dare say it's not a popular perspective on here, but, historically, without SUCC there would be no SUFC. It's a crying shame that the cricket club has now merged with Phoenix, and therefore ceased to exist in its own right. There are many reasons why this has happened, including chronic mismanagement and bad leadership in the 2000s and 2010s. The root of it, however, remains the expulsion of the club from the ground they founded, in the mid-1970s.

I was always a fairly ropey cricketer, but representing SUCC remains one of the things I am most proud of. I still wear my club cap to games at the Lane, where I sit in the South above where the square was, and from where I swear blind I can sometimes see the ghosts of Truman, Verity, Bowes and Hutton stalking the touch line.

A mate of mine is Gary Cahill's cousin
Another mate of mine is Diego De Girolamo's cousin

Uhhhh... that's about it. A mate of mine works at a Maccy's in south Sheffield, apparently Kyle Walker came through the drive-thru once, was rude to the staff and left a load of rubbish behind.

Doesn't SUCC exist anymore?

Vicarious living. The only way to enjoy life with "celebrities"

:)

The bloke I sit next to at work is a Wilder drinking buddy. Bloody useless for insider info though.
Somthing tells me there’s a lot of them about cos I know of a Wilder drinking buddy and he knows nowt anall.
Must be something to do with trying to keep up with Wilder.

That's not the point of the thread or in any of the answers. It was to show how close we all are due to the community that Sheffield has. How close we all are to each other. An example I had which is nothing to do with players, I know a guy who is the managing director of a windfarm vessel company, I was in a meeting with him and my phone went off playing Annie's song and I apologised profusely and said at least he knew which team I supported. It turned out he was from Manor and lived a few doors down from a really good mate of mine. He knew my mates family. It's usually the same when I meet someone from Sheffield that there is a fairly close connection to someone I know. The thread was to see how many of us had a connection to players staff and ex players. Nothing vicarious in that.

I'm glad you've got that off your chest but it was a specific reply to Damski. Supposed to be funny but clearly not. But man from Sheffield meets other man from Sheffield is just dog bites man. It's happened to me all over Europe and the USA, as it has others.

Yes Sheffielders meet everywhere the quoted one was in Grimsby, I have seen him on the circuit in Southampton and other places, it's not just that Sheffielders meet it's that there tends to be a connection to someone else that both Sheffielders know. This is great in a city with over 1/2 million inhabitants. I just wanted to see how this extended to SUFC as I believe we are a community club even more so since Wilder took over as Manager.
If your retort was to directly to Damski then maybe I missed the humour.

I missed it too

It was. Looks like you weren't the only one :)

Not wanting to put a dampener on this "look how we're all connected" fuzzy feelingyness, isn't it just that it jumps out at us when there is a connection in some way and so we remember it? I've met numerous people from Sheffield over the years and there was no greater connection than both knowing where Redgates used to be. Alright, it is a dampener, but still, just thought I'd be grumpy.
