It's a game that we could do without to be honest. Should play a couple of the fringe players (not too many though). I'd like to see players back in their correct positions even if it means playing youth.

I also think our midfield on saturday was too lightweight and lacking a leader. I'd bring Doyle in for Reed or Scougall. I'd go something like this:

Howard
Alcock Butler/Collins McGahey Harris
Doyle
Davies Scougall/Reed
Murphy Flynn
Higdon

Would like De Girolamo to get a decent amount of time too, maybe for flynn or murphy around 60mins.

Second game into the season in the Capital One Cup.
So what do you think the score and attendance will be for tomorrow night?
I'm going to say
3-1
4,150

I expect almost a complete team change. I even hope we lose in a way, cups are a distraction we dont need this season.

Sheff utd reserves 1-2 Mansfield
Porter 70'

Attendance: 3,250

Davies in CM?

I don't understand how anyone could want us to lose a game? Winning is winning and it breeds confidence whether you are beating mansfield or man utd. Nige should, and will be setting us up to win every game we play. A decent run in the cup can provide a massive boost to a teams league form and the further we get, the more excitement it brings and increased attendances etc bring on a better atmosphere for the players to play in front of.

I do not think we will make that many changes to the side, it is a good chance for players to right the wrongs from Saturday and get back to winning ways, we will have too much for Mansfield.

Blades 2 - 0 Mansfield

Attendance: 4500

Our record vs League two teams in this cup is atrocious. Added to how we played Saturday, that we'll probably give game time to players who need match fitness, and our results vs League 2 teams in pre-season, I predict:

Blades 2 - 2 Mansfield (Mansfield win on pens)

Attendance: 5,420.

We're going to lose 2-1.

I have no idea what the crowd will be.

You don't want to lose your first 2 games of the season, whatever team you put out tonight.

As I'll be in attendance for my first League Cup match in many a season, I predict a win.

We need to get into a winning habit, so would like at least 5 of the first team to play.

Yeah, what a distraction all those games against premiership and championship teams were last season. Hell, if only we'd not played in the semi final at Wembley (one of the most memorable SUFC days out ever...remember it?) we would surely have won the league.

Davies in CM?

I think NC clearly wants to play Davies and is shoehorning him in. I would rather he shoehorn him in midfield than at Right Back. Alcock needs to be at RB. I'd put collins in or butler at CB.

Think we need more muscle in midfield. Can Basham play infront of Doyle with Scougall or Reed? Maybe?!?

Hmm how did I know that response would come. We started the cup run 20 odd points behind promotion. So we may as will have had a cup run. Personally I would prefer promotion to another cup semi final.

I always look forward to the 'I know we're going to field a weakened team but will still go anyway and then complain to buggery about how we didn't try and I've been ripped off' Cup :)

How Bizarre !!!

The second game into the new season following a loss in the first match at home, many new faces in the squad that need to gel together, players needing match practice to get sharper and you think it's a game we could do without !!

The mind boggles..............................................

Looking at some comments on this site makes me wonder !
And why is it we have to trade one thing (ie Promotion) for another (eg Semi Finals) Personally I would prefer both !

Good old BBC, Just making shit up as they go....

TEAM NEWS
Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough is set to recall Michael Doyle and Neill Collins after the pair were unused subs in Saturday's defeat by Bristol City.

New captain Michael Higdon is expected to be rested.

Mansfield Town striker Ollie Palmer has an ankle injury sustained in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Northampton and is likely to be out for two to three weeks.

Assistant boss Adam Murray has said several players have knocks, but they are still likely to name a strong side.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
  • In the FA Cup, Sheffield United have only beaten Mansfield once (1988); Mansfield have knocked them out twice (1951 and 1969).
  • The last time these two met was in the third tier in April 1989, which ended in a 2-1 win to Mansfield.
Sheffield United
  • The Blades have fallen in four of their last five round one ties, each to sides from divisions lower down the pyramid.
Mansfield
  • The Stags have lost three of their last four League Cup ties away from home.

The League Cup RD 1 fixture is always a game that we can do without. It always has been. Just as is the 1st RD of the FA Cup. Unfortunately we are shit and in league 1 so we have to start in these shitty rounds.

Don't even mention the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Me too. Just don't agree with sentiments regarding games we could do without or games being a distraction.

I think its a good game to have hopefully get the bad result out of the way against Bristol City and get some confidence in the squad with a win. Also gives an opportunity for the new players to gell and give the fringe players some game time

Mansfield have sold all their allocation of tickets and asked for more.

Should be a crowd of around 10000.

3-1 win for me

Dead right, what I don't understand is how some fans still quote that stupid "Could do without a cup run bolox"
Players don't get fatigued when they're winning.
The Cup run rescued last season from disaster.
2002-03 was one of our most exciting seasons for decades
1997-98 was the one shining light at a miserable time
1992-93 provided some excitement in an otherwise crap season and we survived in the Prem.

I hope we get a cup run in both cups because we always have a better season when we do.

Sometimes your posts are complete b*ll*cks unfortunately this is a perfect example !

With the greatest respect to Mansfield, there's summat wrong if we don't win this one.
2-0 Blades will do for me.
