good work.. SCC have been incredibly slow to capitalise on this. they should have made a museum of football not pop.

Thanks. I wrote the content and designed the route for the app and I think the Sheffield Council are belatedly waking up to the massive opportunity that Sheffield Football history could bring to the town. Scotland's tourism message is all about the golf and a similar job could be done for Association football and Sheffield. I've got a book out on Sheffield History http://bit.ly/2qYw0r0 and the achievements of Sheffield football are unparalleled:

Sheffield: The Home of Football

Oldest Football Club in the World: Sheffield FC

Oldest Club Rules in the World: Sheffield FC

Second Oldest Football Club in the World: Hallam FC

Third Oldest League Football Club in the World: Sheffield Wednesday FC (sorry!)

Oldest ground in the World still to be hosting Association Football: Sandygate

Oldest stadium in the World still to be hosting professional Association football: Bramall Lane

Oldest Knockout Cup in the World: Youdan Cup

Second Oldest Knockout Cup in the World: Cromwell Cup

Oldest County Football Association in England: Sheffield Football Association

Oldest English County Knockout Cup: Sheffield Challenge Cup (Jointly with Birmingham F.A.)

Oldest English Charity Knockout Cup: Wharncliffe Cup

World’s first use of Floodlights: Bramall Lane

World’s first League Club to be called ‘United’: Sheffield United

Oldest Church Team in the World: Heeley FC

Oldest ‘State’ School Football Club in the World: All Saints’ Night School FC

Oldest School Tournament in the World still being competed for: Clegg Shield

Oldest Pub Team in the World: Garrick FC

Oldest Player Insurance Scheme in the World

First ever Chairman of the Football Association: Sir Charles Clegg

First ever F.A. Cup: Made in Sheffield by Martin, Hall & Co.

I'm not getting any content in this app, just a blank screen. The map is there but no content on that either.

Same here,

also the walk mentions Cake .... I was expecting a map showing Cake .......

I’ve already booked for the Saturday walk. Nice to see it mentioned on here

If it doesn't pin-point the exact spot the Wednesdayite was punched in the kidneys, it isn't worth bothering with.

“To celebrate the launch of the ‘Sheffield: The Home of Football’ walking app the Sheffield Library service have organised a special day on Sunday 22ndApril when Sheffielders are invited to do the walk accompanied by home football club historians.”

Sounds good.

Why are only Sheffielders invited to the launch event?

Seems a bit exclusive if one of the aims is to attract tourists to the city.

We don't want any bloody foreigners. ;)

Hi Sorry you having a problem with the app. The software designer cannot replicate the problem you are having. The map will only work if location services and mobile data are turned on but the app content should be there fine. Probably the best solution is to uninstall it and reinstall it.

If the problem persists we have a Facebook Group:

Should also mention the rules of modern football were written in The Plough, across the road from Sandygate/Hallam FC

This is an interesting fact that keeps coming up but I cannot find the original source. The current Plough Inn was not around in 1858 when the rules were written and everything I have discovered points to them being finalised in the Adelphi Hotel in the centre centre where the Crucible is now. The old Plough Inn was around at the right time but I have no evidence for the rules being written there.

I'll get the info (or if not "I Should Coco" on here might have it)

If you speak to the club historian at Hallam FC (welsh lad called Scott, a lawyer who lives in Cornwall and travels to Sheffield on a regular basis), he has a ton of historical documents on his laptop, to do with football, cricket and Sandygate/The Plough.

Yes I've met Scott a number of times and he is one of the club historians attending the launch of the app this Sunday on the 22nd to take people's questions. https://www.englandsoldestfootballclubs.com/sheffield-home-of-football/
It seems that the fact was written down once in a book and has been repeated over the years and I have been unable to find any corroborating evidence to support it. Im selling and signing my book at the Hallam FC v.Eccleshill FC match this Saturday if you want to come along to talk about it further.

Ask Scott (of Hallam FC) about the landlord before Armitage (a cricketer who tired Oz with England then emigrated to the USA and became the only cricketer to be capped by both). Scott will tell you his name and how was involved in the founding of Hallam FC.

It is no coincidence that the 'Sheffield Rules Derby' started the traddition of Boxing Day football in 1860, across the road from the Plough.

I had cause to nip into town this morning. I drove back past the General Cemetery so pulled over and called in on a whim to find the grave of William Prest.

The lady I spoke to at the gate house didn't know much about the specifics of who I was looking for but was kind enough to point me to the correct 'zone' so off I went to find it myself.

For somebody who was buried with military honours Infront of a crowd of thousands I expected to find a huge monument type of headstone but I couldn't find a thing.

I then read in your app that the council removed the headstone in the 60's.... Is that right? If it is, I'm absolutely gobsmacked.

This is the current state of the what I was told is the 'area' in which one of the founding fathers of our national game lays to rest, without so much as a wooden cross to mark his place....

This is behind what is now the nursery - is this where you understand him to be?
