Seen a few on here getting upset when we are referred to as 'Sheffield' rather than 'Sheffield United'

I understand why when discussing Manchester, you have to follow it with City or Utd, like wise Bristol needs City or Rovers

However this is because there are 2 teams in the city, and we need clarification on which one your referring to

Newcastle, Leeds, Leicester etc dont require a United of City, because they are the only team in town

So when we are called Sheffield, it just highlights how pundits and fans of other teams perceive our fine city

Now it would really piss me off if pigs were in the EPL, and they were always been referred to as Sheffield, as I would be screaming 'we are from Sheffield as well you know'

They are irrelevant now as we had wished for over the last 25 years when they have called themselves 'the massive' - that massive most people have forgotten you even exist.

Nothing to do with the Piggies it's a disrespect to Sheffield FC, the oldest club on Earth. They literally started the game of football, without them there would be none of this. They deserve respect.
As someone who played against Sheffield FC a few times when I could actually play football I can't stand them. We're talking 2002-2004 but they were a jumped up set of pricks whose footballing ability was much lower than their players egos.

I appreciate that they founded football, however they had a reputation in the non-league that wasn't very favourable. We beat them a few times as well so it's not bitterness at being shitter than them :)

I object to them having Sheffield in their name at all... But If we were both in the same league it wouldn’t happen.....long may it continue.

I like it when we’re referred to as Sheffield, it kinda means the viewer or listener know exactly who it refers to and no further explanation is necessary.

I’d like that team from the outskirts of the city to drop the name Sheffield in fact. They bring the name into disrepute. Everything from bribery to the Hillsborough disaster and the way they behaved before, during and after, to the present day cheating.

No let the media refer to us as Sheffield, as Carl above says, long may it continue.

Na then Steve, get some work done  :)

It does make me proud when i hear the name Sheffield United on tv or the radio when they are talking about our club and team, but at the same time, to know it will irk that lot from S6 when they just refer to us as Sheffield, does make me smile a little.

Anybody else see that match report in a foreign newspaper about us and Manchester City? They used the Sheffield FC badge!

Someone on here put it up in a different thread but can't remember who it was...

If the pigs were in the EPL and we weren't, they'd call them Wednesday, or The Wednesday, or The Massive, Sheffield's Number 1.

Must be true - a pig fan said so :D :D :D

I'm ok with the Blades being called Sheffield on t'telly

The reason the national media call us Sheffield has got nothing to do with the other lot from the city. It’s more to do with the media wanking themselves silly over Man Utd to the extent they’re so important that there can only be one team called United. That leaves them calling us Sheffield because they view us as so irrelevant that they can’t even be arsed to use our proper name.

I live and work in very much Derby and Nottingham strongholds. To educate the inbred plebs I have on my phone a Sheffield FC fixture list. So whenever a scab or sheepshagger innocently enquire “who’s Sheffield got at the weekend?” I (with a straight face) instantly but politely retort with Frickley Athletic, Wisbech Town or Spalding United etc etc. They are quite puzzled to begin with, but get the message eventually.

Similar sort of thing... Just wrong club, wrong kit and wrong badge.
Though this one is from an inflight magazine on a regional airline in South Africa so may have to cut them some slackScreenshot 2020-11-06 at 17.09.07.png

True, but you could probably then apply that logic to a most teams that have non-league clubs of the same name. We don’t call Blackpool, Blackpool FC, in respect of AFC Blackpool.

I’m fine with us being called Sheffield. I can’t imagine it happening the other way around either. Maybe due to them having a more unique second name.

They didn't create the game

Don't forget Wankers, were all fucking wankers at the Lane!

Here we go again. We are Sheffield United, not Sheffield and not even just United. Sheffield could be us or Wednesday, United (in Premier League) could be us, Manchester, Newcastle or West Ham. I get more pissed off at Salford City Reds being called "United" rather than us getting called "Sheffield." I'd bet good money that in the next Manchester United game we are referred to as Sheffield and the other lot are referred to as "United"

I love my city and love seeing the profile of Sheffield bring raised. However in terms of our football club being referred to as “Sheffield” is cringeworthy and highlights a lack of real football understanding. Anyone or any media company that refers to either us or Wednesday as “Sheffield” deserves nothing but utter contempt.

For all I care they could call us Fairy Cakes United for the next 20 games, provided we win 12 of them.

It's a huge disrespect to all three Sheffield clubs and does neither of us any favours. Just shoes as a football city how shit we are. It's nothing to be proud of.

When Leicester City played Man City they were speaking about “City” as in the sky blues it must have similarly annoyed the Leicester City fans. Why do “City” have to be just Manchester...

All the best teams are like it tbh, Man City are the best city currently it’s just the media portrayal with Sheffield I think swfc are referred to mainly as Wednesday a bit like Milan, Inter Milan are always referred as ‘Inter’ and AC as Milan

Just been watching some nostalgic videos on YouTube (think they are from Matthew Bell of Flashing Blade fame) and was struck how often the likes of John Helm and Nick Powell refer to us as Sheffield. Never really thought about it as a kid...
Nobody gave a fuck. Then someone on the internet said they should, so now you’ve got blokes in their 50s getting upset over something they never used to care about.

“Sheff U” is quite common on my travels around the country. I use that myself when someone asks who I support. Even just calling us “Sheff” is more acceptable to me than Sheffield.
