"There have been reports in the past few days with regards to the two Sheffield clubs scouting in Portugal. Both sent officials to different Portuguese league games over the weekend, but there seems to be some confusion over which club attended the Benfica and Madeira game last night.

Earlier today we covered reports from Portuguese newspaper A Bola that Sheffield United were in attendance to watch Benfica on Monday night and they were joined by Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. Stade Reims, Tondela, Granada, Mallorca, Southampton, Kansas City, Albacete, Celtic, SC Braga, Osasuna and Zenit St Petersburg.

However fellow Portuguese newspaper O Jogo have contradicted this, and have stated it was actually Sheffield Wednesday who were on the scouting list, not their local rivals. A third newspaper Record has just gone with 'Sheffield' scouts at the game without referring to either United or Wednesday.

Despite these conflicting reports on who was in Lisbon last night it seems apparent both clubs are looking to Portugal to recruit players. More accurate reports from the weekend reveal Sheffield United were at the Estoril and Setubal game on Saturday whilst Sheffield Wednesday watched Porto’s clash with Belenenses 24 hours later. Sheffield Wednesday have been sending officials to Portugal throughout the season, and it seems their rivals across the city are now doing the same."

Are you sure it wasn't some fans taking the piss or telling porkies they were scouts to get in free or it was a SUFC scout just on holiday wanting a free ticket . Yep watching Benfica with all those other teams in attendance .

Pay dividends for us , and just couldn't make it up , S2 or S6

Probably just eyeing up improvements to a key area, i.e. replacing Carling with Sagres

The name Sheffield United still holds plenty of goodwill and acceptance at Benfica, thanks to one Jimmy Hagan.

Well said and in total agreement with that one. Let's hope our future is as rosey as in the past with some great players who have represented this club and with a red and white striped shirt

A little off-topic but is it true Derry City play in red and white is due to one of our old-boys managing them years later?

Derry City played in Aston Villa colour kit until 1934 and changed kit to SUFC red and white shirts , black shorts due to manager Billy Gillespie ( ex blade)

Maybe not that interesting but there you go.

I hope there was some better talent on show than when we went to Sporting Lisbon v. Academia.

Vitoria looked good at Benfica, but we're alright for birds of prey.

Just a mix up by the local press, this part of the above statement was correct....

"....A third newspaper Record has just gone with 'Sheffield' scouts at the game without referring to either United or Wednesday......"
