And the last minute, when that 5th goal went in, is one of my all time great memories.

The way the support came together to acknowledge the success of the team was unbelievable.

And yes it was a success, the team played well above the sum of it's parts and every Blade that was there that day should be enshrined in Blades folklore, players and fans alike (except for the knobs that were fighting amongst em selves)
And yet most are in complete denial that Clough was any good.

If you take the sentiment out of football, what have you got left?
So you'd rather keep them out of sentiment and take up a wage someone better could be getting? I like Scougall, his first half season was great... done very little since. Ya'Il need to chill out.

I'm on record as saying that I wouldn't have sacked Clough at the time, and I'm pretty sure that was the majority view too.

For me he had two major issues that with hindsight couldn't have been corrected.

First his autocratic style of man management that alienated too many of the players and secondly, he was risk averse.

His first inclination was that "if they don't score, we don't lose" so although he had a team capable of playing decent football they always felt under pressure at our level in the league but when let off the leash against better teams they showed the real potential that he was suppressing by fear of losing.

Wilder is the complete opposite in both respects and the results speak for themselves.

With hindsight the board made the right decision, although it took the Adkins disaster to get to the end result,

You missed my point altogether.

Football is a game of sentiment.

Take the mental highs and lows out of it and you may as well go to theatre each week to see what's on.

Sentiment is what binds us together and what drives us apart so if there's "no time or place for sentiment" I'm asking what have you got left?

I think all the best managers are ruthless ultimately. CW will be too so I suspect there may even be a surprise departure or two that we've not really predicted yet.
What is clear though is that he knows his own mind but is also willing to be proved wrong and if he thinks someone can add to the squad, even if they have to prove his initial views wrong, he won't hesitate to keep them on.
Scougs does bring energy when he plays but like lots I think he is too lightweight at times. Not that physical size matters all the time -

Didn't mean you mate, I meant in general ,and yes with hindsight it was the right decision although I think Clough would have taken us up ,and this time least year things were very different.

Correct. You'll succeed as a manager of Sheffield United if you do the exact opposite to Brians lad.

I know you didn't mean me.

I was just putting my spin on things, knowing that on most things we're in broad agreement and even when we're not I like to think that we both hold reasonable and considered views. x ;)

I mean the manager needs to be ruthless and take the sentiment out. He can't keep players who have had one good half season out of three and a half can he

And if you speak to my lad he will tell you that I've been an advocate of Wilder's for years too ;)

That said, change is not always good, especially in business and sometimes a period of stability and consolidation works better.

No one knows where we would be now if Clough had stayed on and given the circumstances it's now a pretty pointless debate.

I'm not sure if it's this clubs supporters or humanity in general that's gradually degenerating into scum, but it's certainly happening.[/QUOTE]
