Sanctions on Saudi? Pull the other one

I'm not a fan of Saudi ownership, however, were owned by one Saudi bloke rather than a cabal of billionaire badboys, which i suppose is a bit better (is it?)

No, might as well be owned by Steptoe

Our country and government are very much implicated in the matters in Russia. Well certainly the lead up to this crisis, less so of course now.
We've had so much questionable Russian money, some even more or less direct from the Kremlin into the pockets of donors for political parties.
The sanctions right now do well to deflect the attention away from this, and because we only draw something like 8% of our energy requirements from Russia we are able to cut those ties too without it really effecting us.

Whatever we think about Saudi's actions in places like Yemen, we are quite reliant presently on Saudi oil. Even more so now.
More than Russian money entering our country and politics we will tolerate what Saudi do because we do genuinely need them.

The Prince isn't that close to the upper hierarchy in Saudi. However if the same was to happen hypothetically I think the Prince's assets would be frozen here.
But it won't happen.

I presume like nowadays we can tar everyone with the same brush but at the same time can’t. Strange world this has become.
Our owner unless he is directly sending weapons or killing Yemenis himself is nothing of concern. Plus does it really matter when it comes to football. Sad really but most money in the English leagues where success or not is reached is foreign money and most foreign owners will have ties to countries, companies or people who are shady.

Who wins or loses in these times. The Rich always win…… rich football teams always win.

Hypothetically speaking, let's say the situation in Yemen escalated, and as a result the U.K. government ended up sanctioning the Saudi crown prince, and lots of people connected to him a la Russia, what would peoples reactions be if our prince ended up being one of those sanctioned?

Would we be crying for sympathy like Chelsea fans are, or just accept it?
The Prince has no money and has put no money into the club, and doesn't intend to, so can't see it making any difference to us

The war in Yemen is horrific. We, the British are supplying the weaponry the Saudis are using. And you never hear a peep about it in the media. No-one if offering their spare room to a family of Yemenis

We sell arms and planes to SA and train their army, so it’s a massive contradiction on an economic basis if they are then bombing Yemen
It’s very unlikely it would happen tomorrow but it’s not impossible. The Saudi’s represented a useful ally to us and America as a pro western influence within the Islamic world to counter balance to Turkey and Iran.

The established geopolitical order is changing before our eyes though and at some point Saudi Arabia may not be as useful to the west as it has previously only last week it was the UAE that agreed to increase oil supplies to help with the fuel crisis and not Saudi Arabia. If that were to happen then the case for sanctioning them is incredibly strong not only the atrocities in Yemen but also the questions around how various terrorist groups are funded.

Our fans are as hypocritical as any.

Many lambast the behaviour of outsiders but either turn a blind eye or find excuses for our own behaving the same way.

They're only pro western in the sense that we buy their oil , and they buy our weapons. Otherwise I can think of very few less culturally compatible nations.

I agree it’s a marriage of convenience which is why it could change very rapidly should it no longer be advantageous to either side.

That's a very interesting OP. We are a completely different kettle of fish to Chelsea. They have had around 20 years of success and numerous trophies built on corrupt Russian money. They have thousands upon thousands of fans worldwide who know nothing about pre-money Chelsea. Their whole identity is build on money and power - which they exercise ruthlessly nicking youngsters and in the loan market. I remember the Chelsea of old .... 8k attendances in Division 2 playing in a run down stadium in front of a hard core of nutters to match anyone.

We have no money and never have had. We are built on steel and grit. Our successful managers over the last 30 years have been Bassett, Warnock and Wilder - all in the same mould of win your personal battles and give 100% to the fans. That is where we are different to the porkers - we know who we are and where we come from - let them have their fake massiveness, we don't give a fuck.

I worked in The Middle East in the 1980s, though not in Saudi (but in a regime just as bad). The money they paid was astronomical (around 5 times what I'd have earnt at home), tax free, and provided free housing, free car, free fantastic sports and leisure facilities, free 1st class medical care, free flights, free meals, 10 weeks paid holiday back in the UK (which I mostly used to coincide with part of the Blades season), interest free finance to buy my home in the UK, etc etc. We were even allowed to brew our own beer and party as much as we liked, as long as we didn't involve the locals. A few short years of this allowed me to set myself up properly for life. So do I now sanction myself? What, while BA planes are landing there? While we are running our cars and transport on their oil? While we are using their money to finance our lifestyles?
And, if offered these day, how many folks would turn down the opportunity I did? Come on, answer honestly....

EFL and Premier League need to work with the government to get these owners out of football. Sheffield United is a community asset, as are all football clubs. We should never have opened the can of worms that allowed for this to happen. I can’t believe there isn’t the uproar we had over Super League over this- Newcastle, Man City, Sheff United to name a few could all have the same thing that’s happened to Chelsea down the line coming our way.

Look. Apologies. I plug it all the time. And it's getting very dated now. From December 2019. Talks about Wilder & spending money in a January Window & the now concluded Newcastle takeover. But, here's the piece about Saudi money in our club I wrote for Dem Blades Fanzine.

What’s El Accounto’s view on this?

“Here’s a spreadsheet that shows the current financial position. Yes there are a few items I’ve made up about investment but if you question them l’ll block you. Had that Prince Abdullah in the back of my cab last week. Very clever man”

Would Princy scramble to sell us, whilst on his yacht in the Mediterranean??

It would be an in principle question, since SA is currently an embedded ally of the UK government. But, as long as there was consistency, I would have absolutely no problems with any owner being sanctioned. I will always support the Blades games and cheer for us, I dont have any problems with the Prince's chairmanship, its been arguably my most enjoyable period as a Blade. But I do not want a member of the SA royal family to own us. Yemen is an unbelievable atrocity, which the UK government is complicit in. I have lived in Ukraine and am working now with refugees in Hungary. If a Russian oligarch owned the Blades, I would probably still cheer for us and I would cheer even louder if they were sanctioned. Whats the worst ? we sell some players go down a division, someone else buys us, we go back up at somepoint. That happens anyway.
