Me and a mate had a pissing war in the bogs of Cavendish on West Street around 2005. Both of us were covered in piss.

Carruthers made a couple of surging runs which I think people noticed, Wilder included. I've always had a suspicion that Karl Robinson puts a bit too much emphasis on possession, at the expense of penetration, so it could be that Wilder feels that he can do things like that even more for us, hopefully also adding more goals to his game.





Carruthers has a very good touch and gives us another ball player centrally. If we hadn't signed him and got an injury to Fleck or Coutts, we'd have gone with Basham, who I think Wilder rates, but it would have changed things in terms of how the ball is distributed from central. If both of Coutts and Fleck had been unavailable I'm not sure what we would have done, but Carruthers gives us good cover, and competition.

I watched the first 25 minutes of that game back on Bladesplayer last night, and as it seemed at the time, Carruthers did something impressive pretty much every time he had the ball.

There were 2 or 3 good runs but what possibly impressed me most was a little half volleyed backheel he played between 2 of our players, and weighted it perfectly.

I agree that Wilder should make him more productive than he was under Robinson.

They’re my nearest team of any size, play in the Conference South. Their current manager is a mate of mine and so I was quietly impressed when he signed an ex - Blade. He tells me Carrruthers was on a so far unspecified “loads” at Bramall Lane. To be fair to the player, he’s looked very good down at this level and has scored three or four belters for Hemel in the few games they’ve been able to play between various lockdowns. Once fans are allowed back, I’ll get down Vauxhalll Road and have a look at him.

He completely blocked Carruthers out the picture. Stopped speaking to him, made him train with the kids, stopped him from being involved in first team meetings/ activities etc until he finally left.

Interesting...., I remember him starting over Duffy (for a few weeks anyway) at the start of that season, shaven headed and looking very different. I think Duffy may have been injured for a couple of games though, but my memory ain't the best!

I thought Samir was dealt a tough hand with us.

At the back end of the L1 promotion season he wasn't used often but when he did he looked very good.

Following season he started the first few games as Wilder was looking for a younger replacement for Duffy. He did well against Brentford at home first game of the season and struggled against Cardiff & Boro (sky game). He was ditched and never got a look in since apart from being called out the blue for a lacklustre display against PNE away.

I think the learning is that if you're a cockney attacking midfielder (Carruthers, Holmes, Freeman) don't sign for Wilder unless you want to retire early.
