CONFIRMED Ryan Leonard

I think one of the issues with the likes of Holmes, Leonard, that nob-head that went to the Dingles and several others who seem reluctant to join, is that CW is honest with them. I reckon he's telling them how it is, no BS. You're in the squad, you probably won't be starting but you have a chance to prove your worth and break into the side.

And that is the right thing to do. If they don't have the desire to battle for a place in the first team, forget them. Move on.

While I fully agree with your view of how Wilder operates I'm not convinced that's anything to do with us not signing those three players:

Holmes is a mercenary playing for a charlatan. He's probably had his wages doubled by Charlton and their actions (setting an asking price then hiking it) meant it was a non-starter. Robinson was desperate to get one over us.

Leonard wants to join us but it's not down to him at the moment, it's down to Southend who have also rejected a bid they indicated would be acceptable. That one will run for a while yet.

The lad at Barnsley was never on the radar - cf Wilder's first preseason interview. If it makes him and the Dingles feel better he can spout all he likes.

If he ends up staying at Southend you have to take your hat off to their chairmen for not caving in. We could learn a lot from this saga to be honest
Not really Roy he has withdrawn his transfer request but could still go if the request had stood he would certainly go.
He obviously has a good relationship with the club but if an offer comes in which matches there valuation ; he will go money talks.
Posters have said it could backfire on them ., we of course give the player the option of staying or going which in the long run is best as players can see we won't stand in there way if an opportunity comes there way to better themselves , it is professional sport after all. No one likes to lose there best players

Sheffield
Mate all that hard work you've put in, all that goodwill you've built up gone in a flash... we're not "Sheffield". If you have to shorten our name then United is fine... we did have that first.

( Thanks for the input though, always good when opposition fans can join in without acting up)

Beat me to it!
For the avoidance of doubt, especially as I'm on the Sheffield United site......please add 'United' on any post of mine where I have only included the word Sheffield. Please do not add the word 'Sheffield' when I have included the word United, as I am referring to Southend. Better??? Tarts.

So looking at what their fan on here has said I can see why they are positive. The same way many of us were at the start of the last 6 seasons! But without the rose tinted specs and being impartial I see them loitering around the play offs again at best.
I might have to pop back on here at the end of next season and we can chat again then.

That's the thing about social media, unfounded rumour becomes fact.

Ron - "Ok Lenny, I know I told you that we would accept £500 plus add-ons, well Sheffield United have bid that but I'm going back on my word and knocking their bid back. Grateful if you would now withdraw your transfer request'

Lenny - 'Yeah, Mr Chairman, no problem, my agent agrees as well'.

Please do.
It's not a dig, but it is true that at the start of each of the last 6 seasons we have been pretty positive, in some cases expecting autos and actually barring our first in league one never got near really.

It's a long season, and Scunthorpe showed what can happen when you lose a couple of players and need to bring in new faces mid season and change things a little bit. Results didn't go the same way and they fell away dramatically.
So even if you start well, it's going to be more difficult to get all those older players to play every week for a whole season and it's then where you may struggle.

As for telling us about your academy, the good players you have there and losing them to bigger clubs.....I suggest you REALLY don't go there with us lot!

I withdraw the 'tarts' part, unnecessary.

We got 30 games out of Ferdinand last season, the most he has played for 3 years which is entirely down to our physio Ben Clarkson. Ben is very good at what he does, but not at what he eats.

But you're right, come the cold wet stuff we will struggle. That's why Lenny has been so valuable to us in the past. He will play every game assuming he doesn't get sent off (does happen). Nevertheless I'm feeling very optimistic at the moment and I refuse to let your truthful logic ruin my day.

People take umbrage because the hatred between the clubs is another level up here in the city. I know plenty who hate Wednesday more than they love United. Know people who have had businesses for decades and never employed a Pig.

Hence we get somewhat pissy when you lump us in with the "other lot".

Halal or Kosher butchers? Sorry, off topic and v childish:oops:

Maybe we should have a poll.
I'll vote that we'll sign him before 100 pages.

This does demonstrate the fiasco when chasing transfer targets
That's why Wilder usually keeps everything under wraps until the deal has been announced.
The Leonard and Holmes transfer targets should have never been made public.

They were made public at the other end....

Quite the reverse, Ben seems to have got the hang of calorific intake :)

I really hope so, much better than the Morsy and Dan Burn ones....
Poor old Ben does tend to get some serious stick from opposition fans, including having pies etc thrown at him He has been known to pick sweets up and eat them in front of the opposition before now.

I think we ought to see what happens from here before deciding we have lessons to learn...

This thread will still be running at the end of next season

At which point Southend will still:
1. Be in the Third Division.
2. Have an orange manager.
3. Have a chairman wearing an absurd rug, probably a new one of a slightly different shade of embarrassment.
4. As now emerges, employ Fat Bastard as their trainer.

Our fans will still be doffing their caps crazily in all directions, including that of RugRon, who will have several hundred thousand less in his wig box than he could have...

I will, and will stick them right next to the messages where you didn't want either Wilder or Fleck.

I should have added, and I do: Anyone who thinks Lenny has withdrawn his transfer request out of the goodness of his heart or because he has great expectations of a glory season at Southend, needs to visit a medical practitioner. He's been placated by some sort of assurance. He wants to leave every bit as much as he did 48 hours ago. The request can go in again as easily as it can be withdrawn.

Similarly, anyone who doesn't think Tufty knows exactly what is going on, needs to visit the same practitioner.

Simple really, after discussions with our chairman, it appears he has persuaded him to stay and see out the remainder of his contract.

I'm no expert on footballer's contracts, but I'm sure I've read before that when asking for a contract the player foregoes some of his contract being paid up by the selling club.
The sceptic in me makes me think that perhaps that was Leonard's reasoning, rather than paternal love for Rug Ron.

Refreshing to see a chairman with ambition at a smallish club who doesn't drop his pants when a higher league team comes knocking
Remind me when we last sold a player we wanted to keep for less than £1m.

Not even McCabe would sell for the fee we're offering. If we want him that bad, do what clubs do to us and offer a sum they can't refuse. If we don't think he's worth it, move on and find someone who is

Classic.

It's a big no from me to the little flecker. One good season and he's a must have. He hasn't the height or presence and his goal scoring record of 10 league goals in 9 years as a pro would put Montgomery to shame.

I hope he goes to be small and not score elsewhere, at which point, of course, we'll have 'missed out again'....

But they were mostly from League 2

2 out of 5 isn't most.
What's your agenda JJ?
