I am firmly of the opinion that this latest saga, is the reason the bid has gone in at Oxford

The retraction of the transfer request has prompted CW to move to another target

I hope we just walk away from this if he is messing about. He's not going to start and I'm sure we have other targets.

Time to move on.

The lad wants to join us, he wants to play Championship football in front of 25,000+ supporters every week.

Unfortunately, and something that is totally alien to us, he is contracted to a club who`s chairman does everything he can to keep his best players.
Credit him for bucking the modern trend.

Southend and their chairman have spent the best part of a decade trying to move their new ground on, we should have known nothing ever moves quickly down there.

I wouldn't say Leonard is messing anyone about, just a rare case of him having a lot of respect for his current club. It sounds like he wants to move but wants to do it in the right way and not throw his toys out of the pram. It does look like Wilder has moved on if the other bid is true.

This is turning into a bigger bloody farce than the Ricky Holmes saga. Leonard allegedly puts a transfer request in a few days ago and now takes it out again! What does he think he's doing? Playing Hokey Cokey?

He expects to stay, he wants to leave, he doesn't want to leave.

Would he like to go 50/50, ask the audience or phone a friend maybe?

All this seems to revolve around the supposition that because Southend United did well last season in finishing in the top 10, this coming season will be one where they seriously challenge for promotion. I don't know the comings and goings on down at Southend this summer, maybe one of our Shrimpy mates on here will tell us? but what sort of conviction has been shown by the club in the transfer market thus far? (Apart from clinging like a barnacle to Leonard)?

Have Southend gone out there and started signing up some real quality players to give the club that push into the top 6 or top 2? If you were Leonard, would you be looking at the business the club is doing and thinking..."this is great, they are making some fantastic signings and we're really going to have a great chance of promotion this coming season!" Because that's what he should be basing his decision on - nothing else.

If he wants to play at a higher level of football then it really comes down to..."do I want it now?" or "am I prepared to wait and see if the chance comes with Southend United?"

I've a feeling I know how this is going to end. Leonard stays - Southend United are not looking like promotion contenders in Jan - Leonard leaves for less money than is on the table now.

Bad for Leonard and bad for Southend United ultimately.

I think our chairman and manager are both looking at automatic promotion.

I know that maybe hard for bigger clubs to understand. There is an almost know your place philosophy in the lower leagues. It is why teams like pompey will be one of the favourites to get promotion again despite not really justifying it.

As for us we have lost just two first team players. Adam Thompson to bury. We have replaced him with michael turner. Arguably a much better player albeit with more miles on the clock. We lost will Atkinson to Mansfield and replaced him with michael kightly who is a massive upgrade and great signing at league 1 level.

Michael turner
Anton Ferdinand
Simon cox
Fortune
Ranger
Kightly

Are all very good players at this level.

We then have the likes of

Ben coker
Stephen hendrie
Jason Demetriou
Anthony wordsworth
Ryan Leonard etc who are all very decent and could possibly go on to bigger and better things.

PB has hinted that he is in talks with a player who contacted him and in his own words would be a "wow" signing. A signing which would be ridiculous at this level.

IF we keep Lenny i would expect a top 6 place as a minimum target.

Our biggest weakness is the goalkeeper area. We have Ted Smith who is a youth and England u19 international. And inexperienced and Mark Oxley who doesn't look great.

We have an amazing youth set up. We are losing so many of our youth to premier league sides but with big add ons. We recently lost a 14 year old to man city and they paid a 200k upfront fee which is a record I believe.

Went to the pre season game Saturday and all of the talk has been of Dru Yearwood. Just 17 years old and looks the real deal. Very tricky and confident midfielder. He is one that PB has said will get first team minutes this season. Could be looking at a good few million in the future.

We also have the small matter of a new stadium to be approved In around 6 weeks.

We cannot hope to do anything at roots hall Just 8500 home fans can squeeze in.

The new stadium gives an opportunity to grow as a club.

I hope that the above answers your questions and also why our chairman is so keen to keep Leonard. He is a vital part of what we are trying to achieve. Championship football is worth much more than 500k.

Oh so very true, come match day there are 8000 Ents in Roots Hall going 'hooom' 10 minutes after we score.

Those players mentioned were obviously decent at some time....but haven't been decent for quite some time either!
All I will say is a word of warning when building a side around player says on their way down....we have been there, done that and it went badly. Injury and just being that bit slower will have taken its toll.
Good luck.

So what you're saying is that you rate

Michael turner
Anton Ferdinand
Simon cox
Fortune
Ranger
Kightly

More highly than Leonard who is 'decent' at this level.

Come on lads, this is degenerating into total farce. Shrimperama has responded to one your member's posts about what players we have. I agree that the average age of our senior players is creeping up, but we are not the cash rich club that you lot are and we are pretty happy with what we have at the moment. Some of them helped us finish 7th last season and year on year Phil has improved our league position, so promotion or play-offs is definitely on. Good enough for the Championships as we stand? not a chance, but that's for another day.

The real discussion here should be is Lenny good enough for your team and does he have the ambition/drive to get there? My opinion is yes to all points. It's not his fault that Ron is digging in, he can hardly just fuck off to you now can he, transfer request or no transfer request. Lets see if Wilder comes back with another offer, that will tell us all what he thinks of the boy. If he doesn't and goes elsewhere, then so be it. We will just get on with our season with our team and see how well we do, or don't. That's football.

Yeah we know, but wtf is he playing at?

I think we've moved on to the Oxford lad because this has become farcical

Simple really, after discussions with our chairman, it appears he has persuaded him to stay and see out the remainder of his contract.

I assume he had been told he can leave in January if they are not in a predetermined league position I.e. Top six.
If so he will sign a new contract if not he us free to leave at a predetermined fee.
In between times wilder moves on to a new target.
End of thread.
Off to watch practise at the open.
Cannot wait for season to start
Not felt this good about sufc for a long long time.

Need back up keeper
The centre half from Blackburn
Box to box midfield player who can win the ball
Striker with pace who will I assume be signed on loan from a premiership team

Offload Brayford and Done, any fee would be a bonus but need to get their wages off the books.

Another great day to be a .Blade, wonderful to be filled with optimism.

As an aside many thanks to the guys from Southend: educated, informed debate!

Perhaps the question should be why are we unable to attract league one players to join us?

Starting to get embarrassing.

I would really like to agree with you but I'm not so sure. He has certainly talked him out of putting in a transfer request, the rest is up for grabs at the moment, especially if Sheffield put in another improved bid.

Err we can attract him but he has a contract in place and his club will not release him from his contractural obligations.
God I bet you are fun at parties.
Bloody smile and look forward to the positives not backwards to the negatives

I keep having a dream that I'm playing golf (I don't play golf) and I'm bored as fuck, yet I know there's still loads of holes left to play, and it's pretty distressing.

Genuinely had this dream multiple times recently. It could be due to some deep psychological issue in my life, or it could be this thread.

It sounds as if you could do with professional help. My daughter's a psychologist and if you would like to pay her fees of £600k up front I'm sure she can help. We'll also give you a free Lenny as a promotional gift.

If they didn't go up this season I don't think we will go back in for him next year.
I understand the chairman's stance but this kid has to think about his career.

Let him stay there.

Not the players fault, he has made it quite clear that he wants to leave. But if the chairman won't accept the offer then that's that. The chairman has taken the risk that Brown will be able to get the side promoted and he hopes that might persuade him to sign a new deal later on.

Of course, the kid might just be a lot pissed off and the fans are aware what has happened and there will be a few on his back. The circus around him continues and has an impact on his performances.
Kightly gets injured again, Ranger goes missing, They find out Turners legs have gone and his equally old centre half partner and him are struggling to stop goals.
By january they are an inconsistent mid table so what happens then?

The lad wants to leave again, and he's 6 months from being a free transfer.
He certainly won't be signing a new contract! He's just found out that Ron will go back on an agreement so will be less inclined to sign any new deal with him.
In fact, what they are likely to have is a less committed player, avoiding the tackles and going through the motions for his final year so he can make sure he gets out of there.

So looking at what their fan on here has said I can see why they are positive. The same way many of us were at the start of the last 6 seasons! But without the rose tinted specs and being impartial I see them loitering around the play offs again at best.

Mate all that hard work you've put in, all that goodwill you've built up gone in a flash... we're not "Sheffield". If you have to shorten our name then United is fine... we did have that first.

( Thanks for the input though, always good when opposition fans can join in without acting up)

Sheffield
Beat me to it!

Looks like Dean Hammond has run out of cash. If true, for you mein freund ze season is over.

I think one of the issues with the likes of Holmes, Leonard, that nob-head that went to the Dingles and several others who seem reluctant to join, is that CW is honest with them. I reckon he's telling them how it is, no BS. You're in the squad, you probably won't be starting but you have a chance to prove your worth and break into the side.

And that is the right thing to do. If they don't have the desire to battle for a place in the first team, forget them. Move on.
