My view of this slightly pointless argument for what it’s worth is that I would always rather have someone of lesser talent who worked his bollocks off for the team than someone of more talent who couldn’t be arsed. No one would claim I’m sure that Monty was a better footballer talent wise than Hammond but he would get in my team everyday ahead of a lazy twat like him.
It is harsh in the extreme to try to say that Montgomery didn’t have a career most if not all of us on here would dream of, for a start he pulled on the shirt of our club and always gave his best for it however good or bad you felt he performed. He gets my respect for that and I can’t really get this anti brigade who feel the need to denigrate him at every opportunity but then I’m not as clever as some I guess.

Montgomery had a career we can only dream of, had dedication to it that very few have but he also had ability that most blokes can only dream of.

Was he as talented as a lot of his peers in the top two tiers of English football? No, probably not but they're the 0.0001 percent. It's nonsense to say he was inept as a footballer when all the evidence says differently.

I don't remember him 'hoofing' it forward especially - more him stopping opponents having long enough on the ball to do whatever they wanted

Worked with a lad who was in the same York boys team as Kilgallon and used to come up against Monty in youth football.

My mate and Kilgallon were snapped up by Leeds and they were initially mystified as to how Monty got picked up. After being cast aside by Leeds, trecking around every league club in the north for trials and playing his backside off in semi-pro leagues trying to get snapped up he wished he had an ounce of what every scout had spotted in the the “useless” Monty. Athleticism, application and a willingness to do what it takes.

Monty made his career in football ahead of this ‘talent’ because clubs could see he had something they could use rather than being just another good footballer in his age group.
