Thanks for your welcome and good natured contributions RH Bloke , and a happy New year to you.

I reckon if Rootshallbloke is ever up north, he could one day come to the Lane to watch a Blades match.
He could even wear a “SUFC” scarf to make him feel at home.

Also I feel the same regards our Boxing Day match. I reckon Sunderland were so poor that it’s difficult to judge how well we played. Never seen an opposition team just accept defeat so easily. After we made it 3-0 it turned into a training game. It was so easy.

I'm guessing we won't be playing each other any time soon, but I was at Bramall Lane on 16th August last year for one of only two away trips for me in that season. I didn't wear a SUFC scarf then but I did have an SUFC polo shirt on. I enjoyed the day!

SUFC were shocking that day. Whatever happened to your No.50, looked a reight player?

BTW, I got some full on ITK on Boxing day that we are in for Ryan Leonard. Can't reveal my sources but I reckon we make be making an offer for this guy :)

At University in 1985ish a Saaaafend fan thought my SUFC graffiti referred to the Shrimpers rather than TRAWWs, soon put him right. Ironically I then went out with a Saaaafend lass (from Thorpe Bay, no pubs!).

Ranger has been a non event since he came out of nick. I had hoped for far better than we have been getting, but I've been feeling the same about half of the squad so far this season. As for your Boxing Day news, I'm shocked and stunned!

Ok, I had to check it out. Leonard's passing is ok but he would definitely benefit from being a part of your squad in training and delivering the goods consistently in the Championship. He has no problems retaining possession in FL1 and I doubt he would come up short of he mark with you guys.

Thanks

Hammond was toss. Monty was alright.

There’s no argument on this one, even for a contrarian like you.

I'll never forget Monty harassing Lampard from good a position at the edge of our box, right back to Chelseas own half. It was remarkable and I think Lampard said he was one of the toughest midfielders he'd ever played against.

Say what you like about Monty, but when the oppo had the ball, there were few better at pressing and tackling

Agreed, his off the ball movement / positioning was also outstanding.

Ever played football against someone who's clearly shit at but they're always up your fucking arse and never seem to slow down? They always run awkwardly and appear like they're permanently jockeying. It's difficult to explain.

That's Monty.

When asked who was the one player he never wanted to play against again he said Montgomery

Yes it is. If Lampard ever gave the slightest thought to Montgomery he never went public in it. In the unlikely event he did, he probably thought ‘committed but useless shadow-chaser’.

Agreed Monty was athletic fit but one worst untalented footballer I’ve ever seen couldn’t trap a bag of cement, couldn’t pass water and couldn’t shoot. As a footballer he was totally inept.

But made an honest living from the game, and was paid huge sums of money by Blackwell along with Morgan.
To be fair, I think Monty had any little bit of football he had in him coached out of him by the managers who had him.
I remember watching a training session with Robson doing some work with the midfielders, and the drill kept failing due to the touch of our players. He stepped in and showed what he wanted first time....and Monty continued to get it wrong.

Are we really saying that it's possible to make it through the youth team / academy system and make it as far as the Premier League without being able to do any of the basics?

Montgomery had a career we can only dream of, had dedication to it that very few have but he also had ability that most blokes can only dream of.

Was he as talented as a lot of his peers in the top two tiers of English football? No, probably not but they're the 0.0001 percent. It's nonsense to say he was inept as a footballer when all the evidence says differently.

The voice of reason but I'm sure all the other rubbish is correct !

That's Monty.

You played football professionally?
