If we sign both Garner and Viera I really can't work out what formation we're going to go with unless it means Berge is leaving.

If Berge stays and we sign both then I can't see past a 433 or even 4141 with Viera in front of the back 4.

If Berge leaves we could probably go 4231 or 433 with both.

think if berge is staying it will just be viera who comes in and can see those 2 being the 2 pivots in a 4231 system

Signing viera and garner could be some what of an insurance policy whilst safeguarding us if we end up losing Berge, either before this window shuts or in January.

We haven’t replaced Lundstram and although we have players like Basham, Osborn and the youngsters to fill in midfield I’d be surprised if Covid/injuries didn’t stretch what we have at some point. Plus having two extra bodies over a Saturday Tuesday season should allow us to keep things fresh. Saying all this does make me worried about the central defence by far the most expose area at the club.

I agree. Not giving up on them either, but it's a stretch (pun intended) to say that they deserve a spot. They'll deserve one if they are putting a proper shift in, in training.

How can Norwood and Fleck have done enough, despite not playing well for 18 months? Surely those deserving a spot are those who perform best in training and when given a chance on the pitch?

And who from the current squad pushes them out? Freeman has been out with injuries and fairly crap when he did play. Osborn is the only player who looks deserving based on effort and recent performances, but I suspect he will be played as LB or LM.

Yes but he can only replace one of them, assuming he does slot sraight in.
If Garner is on his way too then fair enough, but I can still see the 2 mentioned being heavily involved.

A fit Vieira would be a tidy addition to the squad. Gives us some much needed althleticism, particularly in the middle. A midfield 3 of Fleck, Vieira & Berge is very strong for this league.

I would expect one or other to be the main target with the other as a back up if the first deal falls through.
Unless we anticipate offloading Freeman or A N other.

Three from Vieira, Berge, Osborn, Fleck, Norwood and Freeman should - in the Championship - be good enough. The competition for places in that should mean that Fleck/Norwood have to up their games considerably from last season. I could still see a possibility that Berge/Freeman could leave so that might be the Garner/Elliott links? If we could end August with Vieira, Berge (Garner if his release clause is met), Osborn, Norwood, Fleck and Elliott, I'd be pretty happy to let Freeman go and be pretty confident we were going to load the bullets for our strikers to prove that they are better than last season showed. Add Davies to the defence and we're set for me.

Dont forget how tricky and drawn out it currently is getting players in from abroad. Man United announced an agreement for Varane a week ago and he's still not signed yet.

I was with the Derby fans in the away end at Elland Road in Jan 2017 when this lad played for Leeds and Chris Wood was on fire at the time.

Vieira was absolutely everywhere and definitely stood out. He tried to do too much at times and gave the ball away a bit, but he is quick in central midfield and a brave ball-carrier who will take risks. Assuming he has matured a little despite being only 23 still.

My Italian friend tells me he is great to watch as a neutral but wouldn't want him playing for his own team... to quote:

"He can do anything: score a rocket, dominate a game, get sent off, disappear entirely. Very unpredictable player. Very entertaining. Not a James Milner 7 out of 10 player as you say"
