CONFIRMED Rob Holding joins on loan

Looked a little rusty on the ball when he came on, probably expected given his lack of game time post Bristol City.

Would I drop Robbo for Holding at the moment?

No, if we drop Robbo (our Captain) for Holding and he doesn't get match sharp quick enough, that will wreck Robbo's confidence and he might not be the same player if we then drop Holding for him.

Would I still sign Holding in the summer?

If we lose Robbo then yes, I would sign him, 29 is still youngish for a defender and he would be a good replacement for Robbo as a solid backup CB.

Robinson is a big boy, he's been here long enough to know nothing's given. We can't worry about his feelings at the business end of the season.

Something clearly needs to change in the run-in and swapping in Holding feels the right option to me.
It's a shot to nothing at this stage.

A lot of us said not replacing Souttar would be our downfall and I still feel that's the case. To not even look at Holding properly because Robinson is club captain and it might upset some feelings would be absolutely criminal.

100% - and it’s not hindsight - the majority on here said it the minute Souttar was injured at Christmas. We needed to spend money on a commanding centre half / a leader. Instead we went last minute in January for Holding instead of investing some of that £10 million Cannon money on a much needed centre half.

Sad to say - the facts are becoming more & more magnified. Big error.

What was with the 5 minutes towards the end of the 90 where he randomly stayed up front? I assumed he was deployed as an emergency striker, but after a while he ambled back in our own half.

Which centre half was available and better than Holding? You're assuming we chose Cannon over some £10mill centre half that could have joined.

Id argue for £10m, any CB from League One and probably the Championship too....

Not reinforcing that area and relying on JLT is suicidal. I'm almost wish that back pass had gone in last night... For the record is was about 10inch over the line anyway and should have been a corner....

Wouldnt know, not seen him play.....

The idea of using a loan spot, loan fee and no doubt high wages, on a player who doesn't play seems a total waste of resources....
But paying a transfer fee and high wages on a player who doesn't play is a good use of resources, gotcha.

Let's be honest, Wilder gas been terrible on the loan front.

BBD - play him every game out of position regardless of performance.
JRS - Bring him off the bench when he needs match fitness
Gilchrist - Lucky to get in the squad
Clarke - play him even though he's poor or he's injured.
Choudhury - starts regardless
Holding - Never give him a chance so unfit.

How clubs like Chelsea are Palace are not kicking off at us for pissing about with their players is beyond me.

Not like we don't have a big number 9 on the bench he could have used.

He opted to bring a traffic cone on instead.

Palace must be confused that someone who is better on the left is taking the spot JRS would be playing on the right.

That said when JRS came on yesterday he got bullied off the ball easily.

young players need to start games. I doubt this season will have benefited his career that much.

Holding is a total unknown at the moment.

The reality is he has barely kicked a ball and we're deep into his loan spell.
It was predicted by most people on here that he wouldn't be match-sharp quick enough and so it's proven.

He's been an awful signing in a really key area. It's not his fault, it's Wilder's.
The one area we couldn't afford to ignore, and we had plenty of time to prepare, we got badly wrong.

It makes the use of £10m on Cannon even more galling.

Tell me you know fuck all about team sports, culture and development without....

At least if we'd bought someone, he'd be developing, getting used to the club, mgt style - so when called upon, there'd be half a chance they could do a job.

How we've used the loan players/market this season is pretty amateur and Holding is the shining example of this.

Gotcha.

They're probably not kicking off because they're banking the loan fee and we're supplementing the wages...

Unfortunately, this is what you said:

"The idea of using a loan spot, loan fee and no doubt high wages, on a player who doesn't play seems a total waste of resources...."

Swerve from it now if you want, but you implied in that post that to pay a player who sits on the bench is a waste of resources. We needed cover at CB and he's provided it, that's what we paid for. Every club in the land spends money on players as cover, many of whom barely ever play.

Talk about knowing fuck all about team sports...

If you're spending it purely on cover, you probably don't need to pay PL wages as it's a huge waste of money. He won't come cheap.

I'm not going to engage with pathetic trolls, even if the point is blinding obvious to disprove.

Calling people that have a different viewpoint to you trolls shows serious amounts of lack of intellect. Unsurprising.

How am I a troll? 😂
Because I say what I think, not what I'm told to think?

Never has a username been more apt than yours. Or change it to lettuce. Same impact.

Holding not the problem we were all over the place when he came on! A lairy few minutes and he settled to do well.Lack of leadership was clear as we started doing silly things even Coops nearly scored an own goal. Robinson and Hamer seeing red mist ! The ref saw no evil the entire match which in the end saved us from a sending off.

plaY class rob holding from start hes no good on the dam bench we leaks goals cant you see so give rob a go from the off far better defender than we have, aarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr we will win last 5 games with holding has no5 jeeezz give him a go gaffer from start why sign him to not play full games,ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

18 months without a professional appearance.
Prior to that, at Arsenal, he got 560 league minutes in 22/23 season. Equivalent to a little-over 6 games.

In the last 2.5 seasons, 6 games of domestic league football and none in the last 18 months.
Dropping in, mid-season, to a promotion campaign which requires several 3-game-week turnarounds.

With our injury record, you'd think it would be a signing we'd swerve.

If he was on a free transfer, and this was June I'd perhaps see some sense in it. But this is our most important signing of the season and not one to take a punt on.

We should be spending the extra bit of cash on a ready-made CB that Wilder wants (and maybe saving the foreign AI punts for the Summer also...).

This whole saga was totally inevitable and I'm not talking in hindsight.

We're now over 2/3 of the way into his 17 game loan-spell and he's played 162 minutes.

He's wasted a precious year of his career, I still think he doesn't really want to be here.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up next season. Probably somewhere like QPR

He should have come in for Robbo back in February
