Rivals transfer activity

If I was a non brainwashed Pig, I'd be fucked off with the continued refusal to entertain bids for some of those expensive underperforming players.

Firstly, I'll pull you up on an oxymoron (non sequitur?). You can't be a 'non brainwashed pig'. It comes with the territory.

You can only 'refuse to entertain bids' if any bids are forthcoming in the first place. Unlike West Ham with Fleck, there's absolutely no evidence that anybody showed any interest in the Wednesday galacticos. Don't go along with the crap they shite on Football Heaven - Bannan and Reach are virtually unknown outside S6, and Fairy's injury record and antics will not have gone unnoticed. Nobody will touch him.

So, back to the JTW. West Brom appear to have 'gone for it' (easy with 3 years of 'parachutes' to come), Forest - on paper - look to have done good business but, apart from us and the odd big transfer in the PL, it's mainly been 'ship out crap and bring crap in.'

The attacking winger Dan James transfer from Swansea City to Leeds United is officially OFF.

Swansea never wanted to sell but the player has kicked up a stink and forced Swansea to accept the. 5 million offer from Leeds.

Apparently Leeds were 99% confident the deal would go through and had all their paperwork agreed and signed, medical done.
But the powers at Swansea for some unknown reason didn’t show any urgency and failed to sign the papers before the deadline.
Apparently Leeds are furious about it and were counting on this addition.

Diddums. Maybe they should have had a spy at Swansea?

WBA have signed all 3 targets unfortunately.

Bit of a blow for Leeds with James!

But there's nothing to make me change my prediction of Leeds and WBA for top 2.
It’s going to take an unbelievable run from us to finish above either. To even be within 10 points of West Brom at the end would be fantastic considering their outlay this season. To finish above them would be an amazing achievement and if that means a top 2 automatic place then a statue of Wilder should be built in the car park before the start of next season.

It's looking good for us so far. We've brought in 3 good players, 2 well before the deadline, while pretty much all of our rivals have left it until deadline day to do anything that will strengthen them significantly.

January activity so far:

Leeds - Kiko Casilla (GK).
Out: Samuel Saiz.

Norwich - Philip Heise (LB from Dynamo Dresden, Bundesliga 2). Akin Famewo (young CB from Luton).
Out: Ben Marshall. Nelson Oliveira (squad players).

West Brom - Mason Holgate (RB).
Out: Harvey Barnes recalled. Oliver Burke. Bakary Sako.

Middlesbrough - Rajiv van La Parra (R/LW). John Obi Mikel (CM).
Out: Danny Batth. Martin Braithwaite.

Derby - Ashley Cole (LB).
Out: Alex Pearce and George Thorne (squad players).

Bristol City: Kasey Palmer (AM).

Aston Villa: Kortney Hause (CB).
Out: Scott Hogan. Ross McCormack.

Nottingham Forest: Pele (CM from Monaco). Yohan Benalouane (CB).
Out: Danny Fox.

I like West Brom's activity. They're being linked with Jacob Murphy from Newcastle, but he's no Harvey Barnes.

Boro have recruited best but it's offset by the departures of decent players, and they could also lose Assombalonga.

If not much changes, and we don't sell anyone we shouldn't, we look to have had the best window. The rest of the day's activities could affect us significantly one way or the other (so this is absolutely Blades related). Let's hope none of them get "a Mitrovic".
Could you update the above please? Thanks!

So... only me that's not bothered about West Brom's 3 signings? :tumbleweed:

I think Murphy is vastly overrated and Montero couldn't get a game for Swansea. Not sure on Johanson, but don't remember him standing out last season... Maybe just me. But we are above them right now and will be on Sunday morning. As long as we keep winning, won't matter what the rest do.

Me either....

In fairness, Montero hasnt started a single game all year, came on as a sub 12 times, for swansea and only made 12 apperances season before for some equador club

Murphy has played 9 times for a shit newcastle this season, 6 off the bench, 3 starts

Johansen was ever present pretty much for fulham last season but hasnt featured much in prem

Still think they would rather have kept barnes than get all 3 of them

No mate, its not just you, but as S5Blade says, I 'm not so sure that they're better off now, or when they had Barnes. Barnes set up most of their goals, apart from when he scored them himself! I know a Norwich fan and he used to tell me that Murphy was very inconsistent; could be great, but too often not in the games, and he was delighted to get £12m for him.

Yeah,Losing Barnes is a massive blow he made everything happen for them, they are still a good side but thier signings do not make up for
losing a star player like him.

At least no one's signed Cavaleiro or McDonald. They were the two I most didn't want to see move to our rivals.

McDonald not going anywhere adds credence to the rumour that we were ready to sign him if Fleck left.

Fairly satisfied with that apart from WBA. Surprised Boro didn't do more. Villa have strengthened a lot defensively. Stoke have signed two good spine players. Norwich have only added a bit of depth. Leeds should have done more.

I agree with you. Leeds don’t look like letting up, they’ve found consistency and improved on their goalkeeper who looked like their weak spot at Bramall Lane.

WBA have the standout squad in the division. A lot of Premiership experience, a lot of promotion experience. I think they’re a good bet to keep their heads and probably win the title.

Norwich have (what should be) a more comfortable run-in, once they’ve got Leeds out of the way this weekend. I also must say that I was really impressed with them on Saturday. On the basis that they’ve already played all of the harder teams and still find themselves above us, with a difficult run-in packed with away games to top half sides, I think we’ll find it really difficult to finish above them.

However, our signings have been pretty good. Excellent considering the resources available. All have shown recent(ish) excellent form in our division. I can see us slipping away from the top 2 race over the next month or so, but I do think we’ll make the play-offs this time.

I'd rank them like this for strengthening:

1. WBA
2. Blades
3. Villa
4. Forest
5. Stoke
6. Leeds
7. Boro
8. Derby
9. Bristol City
10. Norwich

Really wouldn't be happy with that effort if I was a Leeds or Norwich fan. Leeds should be making sure, Norwich should be reinvesting parachute payments and big transfer fees.

We'll find out in the coming weeks, but the Johanson signing worries me, Fulham fans speak very highly of him from last season. He could be a key player for them, but I still think we're as good, especially post our January signings.

A funny kick in the bollocks for them but they shouldn't have left it so late, and they're lucky Swansea even considered letting him go in the first place. They should have been bringing in one or two like Cavaleiro.

The events at Leeds is the type of stuff that used to happen to us.

It just shows how Wilder has learnt his lesson.
He goes for targets and if they are waying up options then he knows we could lose them
So he looks at other options (as back up) and now tries to do his business as early as possible.

It’s interesting how Wilder seems to involve his players regards the decision on targets.
Kieran Dowell is very good friends with John Lundstrum
Madine was a potentials problem but one of Wilders best mates is the assistant manager at Bolton who would have vouched for Madines character, also Sharp vouched for Madine welcoming his inclusion.
Hogan knows Egan, Stevens and O’`Connell well.
So Wilder knows the character of all these new players so he can maintain the great team spirit.

Carroll's a very good signing for Villa. WBA made good signings but no one else seems to be making a big push.

The Norwich fans are very happy and think they’ve had a good JTW.

The reason?
Because they’ve kept their current squad intact. No additions but no leavers either.

I remember a time when if we hadn’t sold our best player, then the window was seen as a success.
Just shows how times have changed.

Think West Brom have easily had the best JTW, bringing in gauranteed quality players, the thing holding back their team is possibly having an in experienced manager who might not be able to handle the pressure of a promotion battle.

Leeds also have a guaranteed top quality keeper but they’ve suorisingly not bought any back up players.
If Leeds have any more injuries then they’ll be in trouble.

The interesting ones are us and Forest who have brought in “potentially” top quality players.
We all know that Dowell, Madine and Hogan have been top performers at this level in the fairly recent past
But they are all currently out of favour and might or might not return to their best form, who knows but at least we have a realistic chance and we’re definitely better with more options than before the window.

I think Derby will be stronger as well for bringing in two incredibly experienced players. Especially King. Both on and off the pitch.

Let's be honest, it's hard to know how any of these signings will do, and luck is going to play a huge part is deciding who goes up. I can't imagine any defence in the division will relish facing West Brom's attack though. They're going to pan some teams if they click.
