Possible summer targets

Good comments all.
Bottom line is that most agree that if we are still in the mix come January then a little investment to get us over the line would be needed.
If we have a weakness it's lack of goals, so for me a creative player plus a goal scorer would be sensible. If we only signed Murphy and Cole, that would do me, although I'd like Ryan Woods in a perfect window.

I really rated Murphy during his time at Utd but agree with the above comments regarding his suitability in the current formation.

In the list of priority positions where additional bodies and/or better quality is needed to be recruited to, left wing is well down with a central midfielder, a pacy striker (or 2) and possibly another right sided player required much more.

Not for me thought he was a bit of a disappearing act in big games and wouldn't fit the team ethic
Would much rather have Brooks

You named that many players in that opening post you were bound to get at least one right.

Would've been surprised had I not got one, but Wilder/Knill/Mitchell's list will have been much longer than what I posted there.

I bet we were interested in a lot of the others I mentioned in this thread too.

Apart from Stearman and Baldock in the 1st post!

I wasn't criticizing your or anyone's ability to see into the future, just interesting to look back and despite us signing about 10-12 players in the summer, it was so long before anyone actually called one right. Just shows how good our scouting is. I know a lot of people moan about our scouting being a bit one dimensional in terms of exclusively going after lower league English players but on reflection I'd rather we were amazing at doing that rather than 'Okay' at attracting foreign and /Premier League players.

I would rather take a punt on oztumer from Walsall, plays as a10/second striker and can play wing if we needed it (don't think we will) hes a couple years younger than Murphy and he's only got 6 months left on his contract.

Why would another #10 be required with Duffy, Brooks and Carruthers are already at the club, all of whom, IMHO, are better than Oztumer?

Duffy yes, CW doesn't seem to fancy carruthers and Brooks when he's played there as part of a 3 in midfield with 2 up top, at the moment doesn't seem to grasp the understanding of the position, he probably will do and will end up as a 10, but at the moment his best position is playing off the main striker

You may well be right about Brooks although I'd maintain that Carruthers is a better player than Oztumer. Happy to be proven wrong but given that no other club has taken a chance on him (even though he'd be relatively cheap given his contract status), he may well be another Nathan Byrne & Sam Morsy (i.e. someone who plays well against Utd which result in his ability being overestimated by a number of supporters). It will be interesting to see where he ends up in Jan or next summer - I'd expect it to be a L1 club towards the top of the league e.g. Charlton.

Being an attacking midfielder no doubt he'll end up with Karl Robinson at Charlton.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest although I'd expect Robinson to go for Carruthers in Jan if he's still not getting a look-in at Utd.

Maybe he'll just sign both :-)

He probably would.

But we should do him no favours whatsoever. Don't think they could afford Carruthers anyway.

On another note, I do think he'll get them up. They'll attacking midfield teams to death with Holmes being at the heart of it. Them, Blackburn and Wigan looked like the obvious 3 at the start and they still do. They're all well positioned.

Think with Coutts out a new Cm is definitely at the top of the list. Lundstram does a good job of the coutts role so I think we'd need a good midfielder who does a bit of everything and is more direct to goal than what we have.

Matty Palmer who played last night seems to fit that bill and I wouldn't think it amiss to take a punt on him. Played well at Millwall too and fans seem to really like him. I'd also like to get back in for Leonard too.

How would I approach this? Who would be the nearest Coutts type player to bring in?

Well, as much as it pains me to say it, because it riled me the way he fked off and ditched us, but McDonald playing the same type of role that Couttsy does would be a good replacement imo

Macca plays in a much deeper role for Fulham these days than he did for us way back and for me could be the seamless replacement we need

Thoughts?

Would he come? Would Fulham let him go? Could we afford him?

Very much doubt CW would go for him. Awful attitude, driven by £, given final warning by Utd for turning up passed to training.

Two more to chuck into the mix.

Emerson Hyndman at Bournemouth - wonderfully skilled midfielder, got experience of big-game atmospheres at Rangers, not getting a look-in as yet at Bournemouth (& they owe us a favour for Jake Eastwood). Maybe a bit attacking/bit more of a number 10 (or Brooksy-maverick) type than the steady central midfielder that'd be ideal. But, remembering him in Fulham's stellar youth cup final side of a few years back (Patrick Roberts, Mousa Dembele, etc), the ball sticks to his feet like glue.

Hakeeb Adelakun at Scunny - lots of hype about this lad a year or two back (with us, I think, being interested for a while), but his progress has been painfully slow. Seems to be blossoming this season though at last, & starting to get rave reviews. Again, maybe more of an attack-minded midfielder than we've got room for right now, but Chris does like positive, front-foot players...

This Coutts injury is really inconvenient - I now have to revise my 'Possible January targets' list...

I don't think Wilder's targets will change much to be honest.

Leonard - Southend
Quina - West Ham
Sam Field - West Brom

2 from these 3 and go again

I think it depends what we are trying to build here and how quickly we see the need to build it, and wage structure we have to play with.

If the answer the above is: "something big, fairly fast and we've got a bit of money" then I would seriously try a considerable Coady bid.

This is great...Wolves are going to sell us (their closest rivals in the table) one of their first team regulars, who has just signed a shiny new contract with them...and all at a cost we can afford...woohoo!!:rolleyes::tumbleweed:

Thanks for the hindsight like Danny04

That post was a whole 4 months before Moore got injured and opened up the possibility of loaning a keeper.

Pleasure, Richard. Moore's injury was irrelevant, really; CW doesn't do 'No.1 and No.2' 'keepers.

You can only say it's irrelevant if you know Chelsea would've loaned us Blackman without knowing he'd start as first choice.

My thoughts are that to adequately replace Coutts, you would need to get Cesc Fabregas.

So a bit unlikely !
