Couldn't comprehend what i thought i'd heard when the breaking news was announced on the radio, had to get a text from a mate to confirm it, totally shocked by this, my thoughts are with his family. R.I.P Gary Speed.

Devastated this is awfully shocking news my thoughts goes to towards his family and friends.

Real shocked a gob smacked.

I heard about dinner time and I'm still trying to get my head around it.

Having read the Collymore article about his problems over the weekend,I hope it's struck home the fact that although the public think footballers have the life of Riley, they are susceptible to the same pressures and stress as all of us.

Let us remain united in our appreciation of his time as both player and manager,as an ambassador for the game, and as a well respected individual by his fellow professionals, and most importantly, offer our condolences to Gary's family and friends.

My heart broke when I heard of this today. Let me say something if I may. Depression is the total silent killer. You don't have to have anything going on "behind the scenes", it doesn't matter if you have a great life or a shit life. You don't have to have any sort of problems, it doesn't work like that. It creeps into your head and into your life and takes you down, regardless, and at random. Nobody knows and could possibly know unless you tell them. And for the most part you can't speak up because depression is seen by so many as a mamby pamby male weakness "get over it", "snap out of it" condition for stressheads and non-handlers.

I cried for Gary Speed this morning. Because the loneliness he must have felt to end up here is heartbreaking. Let's all hope that society might change its attitude to this terrible illness to maybe help the next poor guy beat the black dog bastard.

God will care for you Gary, you super Blademan from the Lane. Up the Blades.

Why is it that, as a high profile personality, the media feels a "need" to answer the most obvious of questions.

Why ?? For example Robbie Savage headline in todays rag of "Why Why Why"

Beyond the fact that Speed is gone, and in tragic circumstances, why do we all "need" to know ??

Do we all "want" to know ??

FFS let it lie and have the decency of allowing his family and close friends the privacy they most certainly deserve.

We might not need to know but surely you can understand why his family and close friends, which appears to include Robbie Savage, might need to have some understanding. I think it's for his immediate family to decide. It was a very strange turn of events. If he wasn't depressed and accounts seem to suggest that he wasn't, although perhaps his GP might beg to differ, then there has to be another explanation. I've seen a bit of the Football Focus interview and his mouth moves into a smile but his eyes seem to give a different message. By all accounts he was there for everybody, caring and always available. I've heard several accounts on radio from members of the public who say that he would always give them the time of day, one guy saying he spoke to him for 30 minutes in a shop. Perhaps Gary couldn't say no to people and it all got too much for him. For a coroner to give a verdict of suicide there would have to be evidence of planning eg. getting financial affairs in order, maybe even a letter. If that's not what happened then I guess we'll never know.

Very sad

feeling numb at the moment, my mother passed away on friday, and now the news about gary speed has totally devastated me.

Such sad news, I heard in the ambulance on my way to hospital - I had to stop the lass talking to me to ask what the news was. Completely forgot about the blood pouring out of my head when I understood what had happened.

Thoughts and condolences to his family.

Rest in peace Gary.

Hear hear. Very well said.

Been away from the internet for couple of days but heard this yesterday lunchtime.
Absolutely gutted, it was hard to do my job last night, couldn't think about anything else.

I can't add any more to what has already been said.

R.I.P Gary, one of football's true shining lights.

Complteley correct.

Obviously, we won't know until the Inquest as to whether depression was the cause of what happened, but it does seem very likely.

As you say, depression has absolutely no basis in objective facts. For most people Speed, would have seem to have had it all - an immensley successful career, wealth, a gorgeous wife and two healthy children. Yet depression takes no account of that - you feel that life is just hopeless and pointless and some people end up killing themselves.

Depression is just as much an illness as cancer and can be just as devastating. As you say, there should be more societal recognition of this.

Incidentally, on the BBC website, there is a pic of Speed when he was appointed as Wales manager. His mouth is smiling, but look at his eyes.

such tragic news - i'm still finding it hard to comprehend whats happened. A true gentleman and legend of the game.

I'm still absolutely stunned by this, to come off the pitch yesterday and be greeted with that news was one of the biggest shocks I have ever had.

RIP Gary, the ultimate professional.

It's baffling. He was a famous and well-liked character. It's very natural for people to want to know why he committed suicide. Everyone who knew, or knew of, Gary Speed is asking why this happened. If they aren't saying it out loud they are certainly thinking it. If someone who appears to be well-liked, successful and well-adjusted suddenly takes their own life it would be strange not to ask why. Saying that, this discussion should probably be held on another thread.

RIP Gary. Top bloke.

How do you know he was depressed?

How do you know he was depressed?

I have no idea whether Gary Speed was depressed. I never said in any of that piece that he was or wasn't depressed, I have no idea.

I made a statement from personal experience about the terrible effects of depression, which sometimes, believe it or not, leads to otherwise outwardly fit and well professional men with great careers, beautiful wives and loving children, hanging themselves.

Gary Speed was a great guy. Instead of wasting your time looking for an argument with me, take a moment to say a prayer for him and his family. It will have more value.

Whoa there buddy. I'm not trying to start any arguments.

Just saying that nothing has yet been released about the nature of his death so nobody knows if it was due to depression or not.

Interview with his agent claims he wasn't depressed, (or showed no signs of being anyway) nor did he argue with his wife. Pictures of him with fans before FF show him looking (apparently) happy and relaxed....whatever drove him to do what he did was either momentous, (to him) or he had been hiding his demons incredibly well.

at least if his family knew why they may be able to grieve more peacefully.

Strange that Bradford and Wendy fans seem just as upset when he played for their main rivals. Not many players (if any) have ever done that. RIP Gary Speed!

As do Man U and Liverpool fans. Basically I think you would be hard pushed to find a football fan with a negative opinion of him, which in the current footballing climate where anyone who plays the game at the top level is seen as a reprehensible ****, is an achievement in itself.

I cannot say anything more eloquently than the tributes which have been made, so I won't try. I will only say the world is a poorer place without a man who was as respected and well thought of by everyone he had contact with. Rest Peacefully Gary Speed

The S U Golf Ball with the simple message "RIP Speedo" was something I just HAD to do.

God Bless you Gary.
