To fully enjoy the good times, it is worth remembering the bad times to bring home how good things are just now. The news that Bristol City players are reimbursing fans who made the trip to see them lose 5-0 at Preston prompts me to ask when you have ever seriously felt you deserved a refund from a United team. Needs to be a proper hammering, team never turned up, embarrassingly outclassed, etc. I can recall a few home performances of that type, but which away performances have been that bad?

Wolves play off final
Burnley play off final
Arsenal away that Digger said
Gillingham Away last season
Scunny away 4-0 last season in Championship

Never been into a game under the illusion that we couldn't lose, so not really. Maybe I could've been given a discount for the missing end of the Battle of Bramall Lane.

Considering the gulf in quality between the rest of the season and that game, this years trip to Walsall doesn`t come far off.

I went to Retford vs Hallam for a preseason jolly. Despite being one league below (at least I think) Hallam won 0-7. And Retford's assistant manager got asked to leave for calling the lino a "Fucking ****". Retford reimbursed their own fans.

Top day out.

Back in the day I went to a few disastrous away days. Wrexham for a midweek cup game, not only did we get hammered, I got food poisoning from a dodgy chip shop supper. Grimsby away in the fa cup , got hammered then kept in by the local police after, squashing us all in a tiny space behind the stand. The wooden fence got smashed down and everyone poured out into people's back yards. Luton town away in the cup. Aston Villa etc. Too many to remember.

Crewe away February 1st 2014! Freezing cold and a 3-0 thrashing that left us bottom of the table....was convinced we were going down!

and a few days later we went to Fulham and Sean Miller scored the winner

I have not been convinced yet (and I'm not going to give you the refunds anyway!) Bad as things have been (some of the defeats have been at very unfashionable clubs), the Gillingham and Stevenage defeats seem to be as low as we have gone. At least the 6-0 at Arsenal was against a team in a higher league, and at a big new ground, so no refund there! The most humiliating performances I have seen have been at home - the 0-5 against Oldham, and the 2-7 against Rotherham in the 1950s are the ones which stand out for me as really low points. Oh, Boxer Blade, I will make an exception for the 10-3 at Middlesbrough in 1933; I note the crowd was only just over 6000, so not many Blades there. But if you send me your ticket stub, and the address of your Care Home, I will send you the refund.;)
