He may not have scored the most, but Steve "Queenie" Thompson's own goals to games ratio must be up there. I can remember at least two.

You're absolutely right, I'm sure that's what Silent Blade originally meant!
It was a screaming header too (1m28s):
It would have been more if he was quick enough to get to the ball.He may not have scored the most, but Steve "Queenie" Thompson's own goals to games ratio must be up there. I can remember at least two.
Colin Franks scored an own goal at home to Blackburn in Sept 1976 but equalised for us a minute later!Holdsworth scored at both ends in the first Swindon game. He scored for us about 5 mins after the OG.

Tommo scored an OG in the FA 5th round tie away at Norwich which we eventually lost 3-2 when the were top of the first division and we were going well in division 3 under Bassett. Fabulous support from the thousands that packed out the away end that day.
That was a weird game, 8th April 1989, one week before the Hillsborough disaster. Looked like it was heading for a 0-0 then we got three goals and Stan scored his o.g. Sadly this was the game Brian Smith broke his leg and he never played again. That is widely acknowledged as the best in the last 40 years.
Stancliffe’s diving header v Preston in 1989 is the best I’ve ever seen from a Blades player.
Was behind the goal when that went in.And the best OG ? ... any older Blades remember Reading away 82-83, Jeff King 25 yard screamer by all accounts?
Remember the game well, at the very least we should have brought them back to the Lane for a replay. When you have a strike force like Deane and Agana you always have something to hit the oppo with. And fair play to Bassett, the following season he tightened up the weaker area of the team, the defence, to take us up another level.
Replied to with Ooh aah Cantona from the Kop in 1993.I remember L**ds fans singing "There's only one Brian Gayle" whenever they played us after his o.g. won the league for them in 1992.
Scored our opening goal that day. It was in the 6th or 7th minute. Northampton's equaliser wasnt an own goalHave a like just for the nickname.
Didn't get an og at Northampton on the day of the Hillsborough disaster?
One saw Brian Smith score a corker of an own goal at Brighton. Last few minutes, the game had 0-0 written all over it, a cross came over, he swung at it and sliced it straight into our net. That was a weird game, 8th April 1989, one week before the Hillsborough disaster. Pembo for Manchester City was quite something too. 1993, Friday night. That is widely acknowledged as the best in the last 40 years.

Not sure if Eddie Colquhoun scored more than 4 own goalsBeen doing some research on our own goal scorers. Started with the 1990s as that was fertile ground given Brian Gayle was with us.

David Holdsworth v Swindon H, W 2-1
I will do more on this when I get time, but Gayle is the clubhouse leader with 4 own goals, closely followed by Holdsworth.
Always felt a bit sorry for Gayle with that goal. I think wind was making anything in the air really hard to judge that day, but more importantly I think Rees was still injured from ridiculous 1st goal. From what I remember he wasn’t mobile at all causing all sorts of uncertainty whenever ball went near the box.And Gayle is a lifelong Leeds fan.

I will have a go but from 1976 to 1982 is difficult to remember.More own goals in the league: 1980s this time. I have no data prior to 1982-3:
1982-83
Gary West v Newport A, L 1-3
Jeff King v Reading A, L 0-2
Stewart Houston v Preston A, L 0-1
1983-84
No Blades player scored an own goal
1984-85
Gary West v Birmingham H, L 3-4
Brian Smith v Brighton A, L 0-1
1985-86
Phil Thompson v Charlton A, L 0-2
Paul Stancliffe v Wimbledon A, L 0-5
Paul Smith v Norwich H, L 2-5
1986-87
Jeff Eckhardt v Reading H, D 3-3
Andy Barnsley v Bradford H, D 2-2
1987-88
Chris Wilder v Oldham A, L 2-3
1988-89
Martin Pike v Southend H, L 1-2
Steve Thompson v Southend A, L 1-2
Paul Stancliffe v Preston H, W 3-1
A few notes:
Gary West's winner for Birmingham came in a bizarre New Years Day game where it was 0-0 at HT and we went 2-0 up before conceding 4 goals in about 15 mins
Paul and Brian Smith were brothers. Paul's own goal was in the game that saw Porterfield sacked. It was on Match of the Day and can be found on youtube.
Eckhardt's own goal, which as I far as I can remember was a deflection he could do nothing about, was Reading's 3rd goal in 5 mins after they came back from 0-3 down.
As stated upthread, Andy Barnsley's goal was in the first minute.
Pike's goal came in the 9th home league game of the season and was the first one we failed to win.
Brian Gayle still the leader for the period between 1982-83 and 1998-99.
Just rememberedI will have a go but from 1976 to 1982 is difficult to remember.

1977-78
Calvert v Luton (h)
1979-80
Moore v Exeter (a)
V Bradford in 1986-7. We were 2-0 down after 10 mins.
I remember this well because I HATED bloody Andy Barnsley and it was on my birthday! Proper bullit header into top corner, the twat!It was v Bradford in 1986-7.
It was a bullet header as you say, but it wasn’t a corner. It was a cross from open play from the right at the Kop end in the first minute.
My mother used to inform me about Steve Goulding being famous for own goals. I'm unsure how many he got.Not sure if Eddie Colquhoun scored more than 4 own goals
Was it 1994 95 when Brian Gayle got an og home and away v Luton?I will have a go but from 1976 to 1982 is difficult to remember.
