Anyone know who holds the record for most own goals “scored” for us? I seem to remember Brian Gayle being decent for an own goal or 2, didn’t he score two in one game once ?

Great question! Jags has a couple

Andy Barnsley could always be relied upon to fuck things up and score an own goal or two. Remember one on front of the Kop. Header rifled into the top corner past a bewildered Andy Leaning. Might have been in the 5 nil collapse v Oldham at the Lane when McEwan was sacked immediately after.

I'm sure my first ever game was a 1-0 defeat, and Kenworthy scored an own goal I think, bet its him

Colquhoun 2 ogs v Wolves in Dec 1971, one at Stoke in Oct 1973 and v Wendy (h) in Oct 1970

Gayle v Leeds (h) and 2 v Luton (h) in Oct 1994?

Gayle 'only' made 1 in that Luton game in 1994.

Jagielka has definitely had 2 in the Premier League for us, at Arsenal in 2006 and at Leeds earlier this year.

Had a feeling it was in a 2-2 draw? Went 0-2 down? No idea who it was against. Recall the goal though!

John Pemberton got a cracker once against Man City and as an unlikely own goal scorer Beattie got one against Stoke didn't he (3-0 down at Bramall Lane after 15 mins all from Delap long throws as I remember it).

Paul Beesley feels as though he should have had a hatful but I can't remember any.

Surely Holdsworth. He had a real hot streak one season - the one away at Swindon was a bullet diving header.

About 2.50 here:

Scored at both ends that day

Sheffield lad Digby in the net for them

Just the one I was thinking of. Terrific goal, if it’d have been at the other end.

Other unlikely OG scorers:

Deano at Sunderland in 1989-90
Richard Cresswell v Oldham in 2011-12

Holdsworth got 3 own goals, 96/97 against Swindon (A) and Norwich (H) then again in August of 1998 vs Swindon (H)
The first 2 goals were scored within 8 days of each other.

Holdsworth scored at both ends in the first Swindon game. He scored for us about 5 mins after the OG.

In the Norwich game we were doing fine and then Kelly (I think) was injured. We had no keeper on the bench and Nilsen went in goal. He was awful and at fault for both goals he conceded, one being the OG. We lost 3-2.

I can still visualise the goal that you mention, Weasel. It was a corner from the John Street side, and Barnsley met it at the near post with the sort of textbook header that you used to see depicted in football books back in the day when heading was still seen as a skill - using his neck muscles to power it straight into the top corner.

I can’t for the life of me place the opposition, though. It wasn’t the 0-5 debacle versus Oldham in 87/88 - Barnsley (perhaps surprisingly) wasn’t in the side that day.

I’ve got a feeling that Andy Barnsley’s screamer might have come in the previous season - 86/87 - and that Burridge might have been the powerless keeper rather than Leaning, but I can’t quite pin it down.

It was v Bradford in 1986-7.

It was a bullet header as you say, but it wasn’t a corner. It was a cross from open play from the right at the Kop end in the first minute.
