Was going to go to Dortmund's game last night, but a combination of bad weather and horrendous roadworks kept me at home. So I watched the game in a sports bar. I sat with a group of Dortmund, Bochum and Hannover fans. I'm an anti social git. I don't like people generally, so I didn't speak to anyone. At half time I heard them all discussing attendances. A Bochum fan mentioned a team in the English 3rd division who were getting 28000. One of the Dortmund fans named us. He knew a lot about us, mentioned the cup runs last year, the age of the club, first floodlit game and us being top this year after a poor start. He even mentioned Billy Sharp, who they all seemed to have heard of. The consensus was that crowds like that would be unthinkable in the German third tier. One of the Bochum fans then went on his phone and spent 5 mins reading out facts about us. So well done all of you who have gone and go,week in and week out. You have got the Blades recognised and respected, abroad.

And you still didn't speak up !?

At the Scunthorpe home game we got talking to a couple of guys in the massive turnstile queue for the Kop. Surprisingly, both were German and I know at least one was a Bochum fan. He said that he had been to a good number of games including some of the cup runs, and he even referred to our cross city rivals as "f*****g pigs". I shit you not, he had a look of Klopp about him.

They were genuinely nice blokes, and seemed like adopted Blades to me. Thought I would share.

Asking for a beer would mean speaking to someone :(

I was thinking more along the lines a few selective grunts, a half arsed rendition of the last verse of the GTB and a thumbs up. Worth a try surely with beer on offer (potentially)?

Great German fellas....Erm. I don't drink and I'm not joking; I don't like people. I think it's my age. They were quite young. An old man, sitting on his own, getting involved in a conversation with some yooots, nah. I would have papped my undergarments.

I'd have gone over and very confidently said eins, zwei, drei.

Not that unthinkable: Dynamo Dresden averaged over 22,000 in 2015 when they finished 6th in the 3.Liga and over 27,000 in 2016 when they won the title. They were the only third tier team in Europe out-drawing us.

We used to have a German guy make the trip to the lane to see us occasionally, God knows why? I found out he was German when we got talking when I was selling programmes he had seen us on TV got interested and it ended up that he had to come over and see us at a live game, I suppose he was hooked after that.

I thought that when he said it. Dresden are disliked here due to their fans being stuck in the 80's regarding hooliganism and in the 40's regarding their political views.

That OP has just made my day.

I hope the powers that be at the club read this and realise that once again it's the Blades supporters that are it's greatest asset.

Wasn't it Xavi or Iniesta a couple of years ago made reference to our supporters? As did Pochettino in a Spanish newspaper.

I've noticed that Bochum has been mentioned twice. Sheffield is twinned with Bochum as it happens. I wonder if that's got anything to do with it?

Took a few German exchange students to the Lane in my school days. They were Bochum lads. I think a couple of them still attend the odd game when they visit. VFL Bochum is a fine club with friendly fans. Beer in the stands too I believe! Prost!

Didn't know Bochum was twinned with Sheffield. Interesting, I would have thought Duisburg would have been better, being a steel town.
The Dortmund fan who knew a lot about us had a Köln accent. Work that one out.

It's probably more on their radar than ours as Europeans tend to take these things more seriously, we had the Bochum Parkway and Donetsk way (in Cyrillic as well) named presumably after the twin cities

What no mention of bellends from S6 ?

The bloke who asked this on Porktalk won't be happy.

Are Sheffield Wednesdaythe most importantfootball club in the world.

I am pretty anti social myself, but I just couldn't have resisted saying something! What a missed opportunity.

I speak German, I just don't do speaking to people that I have not known for more than 2 months.

That would make speed dating a challenge then :-)

Somewhere on Youtube, there's some footage of aome St Pauli fans singing the GCB song on a Hamburg tram, as taught to them by a Blade living out there.
