Putting aside the Coventry game and so much of the hilarity as a result, I'd like to discuss the inevitable rebuild in the summer. And this is putting aside my own antipathy for the man that can be said to be tasked with it.

Loans are a solid route to building a team good enough for the short term, without being substantially hampered with players not able to make the step up upon promotion. This is the case with the gap in quality between league one and the championship being so noticeable at the moment.

Permanent transfers at this level should only really be looked at for things like young players needing development or older players on one year deals at the maximum. Any permanent deals longer than one year should only really be sanctioned if a promising loan spell has ensued. It seems as though Adkins has gone against this already though with two permanent signings, with one transpiring to be one of the worst I've laid eyes on in Woolford.

I just don't think we've given loan signings the emphasis they deserve in recent years.

It'd be nice if we could bear this in mind next summer and approach things with some sort of subtlety for once.

Thoughts on the route you think ought to be taken?

Over-reliance on the loan market was a factor in us getting relegated from the Championship due to having a side that was disjointed and couldn't gel, so you need to tread carefully.
Make the permanent signings that can form the nucleus of a good team and use any loan acquisitions to compliment that as and when required. I think that's the most sensible way forward.

Warnock used to talk about the squad having a heart of Jags, Monty and a couple of others. I think that's the key to it. You need a core of players you can bank on, and around whom the weaker players can thrive. Ideally those players are a similar age, on the up, and you don't sell the buggers.

That's what's glaringly absent from the current team. The complete lack of anyone at the heart. Nobody leads and normally forms the part of any foundation.
That's the difficult job we need to do. Sign players with both the ability and the character.

I think that's what NA is trying to achieve by bringing in Hammond and Sharp. Don't know how vocal JB is but I would have thought he is highly respected by the players. Those 3 alone should force the others to perform.
4 players needed for me...

Burn
Morsi
A fast tricky winger and a proper brute of a striker because Sammon simply isn't consistent enough.

God I would love to have half a dozen players with the ability and enthusiasm as Done has.

UTB.

I agree with all of that. When I mentioned leadership I almost said 'with the exception of Brayford' because I do think he has a bit more authority about him. Having said that, I'm not sure whether he has the temprement either.

If your talking about long term loans, can't see a problem with them integrating, i.e a year. Short terms are just going to upset the balance, unless they are shit of course.

One of our problems with loanees was that we resurrected a few careers which meant they were then way out of our league by the time it came to us thinking about securing them for either longer or on a permanent. Cahill and Phillips come to mind immediately.

What I would give now for us having a loan player who resurrected his career whilst with us.
