Hear me out,

Supposing Wilder and Sir Alex Ferguson had a conversation one day and Wilder asked Sir Alex what was one of his biggest regrets as a manager and Sir Alex replied "not getting the best out of Ravel Morrison who could've been an England regular and one of the best players in Europe".....

Sir Alex then asks to see if Wilder (who he sees alot of the same man management qualities as himself in) would entertain signing him to reignite him and bring him back down to earth a little. Wilder ponders the suggestion and agrees but only if Sir Alex agrees to be Wilder's mentor. Sir Alex agrees to the deal.

Wilder signs Ravel and manages him as a man, an ego, perfectly. He doesn't play him as it would upset an already upwardly moving squad but he works on him behind the scenes as a man - something that Sir Alex could not do. Sir Alex is now living vicariously through Wilder helping to mould Ravel.

Ravel leaves the Blades with nothing but plaudits - he's got a great attitude, trained well and got on with everyone - no one has a bad word. He moves to Boro and the same happens. Staff love him.

Who knows if Ravel will fulfil the predictions Sir Alex had for him but something was fishy about that deal.

The good thing is that you've opened up.
Seek help.

This just reminded me.. Of what I don't know.
Good though.

Ahhh fuckinell, I thought you were blaming him for Covid from the thread title

It's a good theory but there are just one or two errors as follows:

Sir Alex then asks to see if Wilder (who he sees alot of the same man management qualities as himself in)
Ferguson used to ref matches, Wilder doesn't even complain when we get dry buggered by the officials.

Wilder signs Ravel and manages him as a man, an ego, perfectly.
Fines him repeatedly for breech of club rules.

Sir Alex is now living vicariously through Wilder helping to mould Ravel.
Morrison is the same great player but loose cannon as when he arrived.

Ravel leaves the Blades with nothing but plaudits - he's got a great attitude, trained well and got on with everyone
See quote 2 above.

So apart from these items I think you're onto something.

I had no idea he had been repeatedly fined.

Presumably this was PR spin, then: https://www.sheffieldunited.news/ne...n-has-been-a-success-despite-lack-of-minutes/

I may be mistaken but I think the fines are the standard squad discipline ones for not being on time at training – think the source of that would have been on a player Q&A of “who gets fined the most?” and whoever answered said “definitely Ravel”. Not a big deal I think, and more of a fine system among the players for stuff than say fines for serious breach of club discipline.

Can't remember where but I did read that when Ferguson presented Wilder with his LMA award he put in a word for ravel then

That was what I was referring too (although flippantly as usual) having said that, the easiest part of any job has to be getting to it on time.

I think since Morrison left, Mousset has taken the title of most fined. I can’t remember which player it was but they essentially said he’s frequently late and had no excuse given he probably drives the fastest car of any of the players.

Think it was Billy Sharp (I almost made the mistake of using his initials!)

Hmmm

My thoughts are that CW thought he could extract the player from inside Ravel that he undoubtedly is, but sadly has failed.

I can see why CW did it. Low cost, low risk, and if it went well we had a multi million pound asset on our hands.

Sadly, it hasn't gone well. Frankly I'm suprised someone as decent as Middlesborough wanted him.

I doubt he will ever be as good now as he still thinks he is.

One day he will be seen turning out for a "plucky non league side" in an early round of the cup with a "whatever happened" back story

I partly agree with The Crab, however I don't actually think he's done a lot wrong. CWAK saw it as a calculated gamble, a clearly hugely talented individual whom on a purely technical level we would never have been able to sign at the start of the season if he didn't have some serious black marks against his character. An individual who had a bit of a spark and the ability to make something from nothing. The issue has been that frankly we've shown that we do not need him. The existing squad has pushed on again to new levels of performance, which few of us thought they all would, and he's simply been unable to shift Fleck from his first team birth. If we'd been struggling at the lower end of the table, and the season had been more of a drain on our players with more injuries and suspensions then I can see why we brought him in. That's not played out and we've barely needed to rotate the squad so he simply hasn't been required and therefore hasn't had his chance.
With Berge being an obtainable target in January it shows we're fishing in a different pond now and Ravel won't get a chance, so we moved him on.
I suspect the summer will be the same, where targets believed to be out of our league are now achievable so the opportunity has gone for Ravel, but we should hold no ill feelings toward him. GLTTL.

You might also want to consider Porterfield
No, he'd definitely be behind Wilder (much as I enjoyed turning up to games knowing we were going to win, we were still in the bottom half of the professional football pyramid).

He wasn't better than Wilder but he was better than Furphy.

It seems to be a deliberate part of our transfer policy to choose low cost...low risk players.

Its a bit like being given £5 and told to put it on any greyhound with really long odds.
Makes sense....to have a low cost gamble strategy.....every now and then one might pay off.

I’m more than happy for us to have a punt on players like this. Low risk, high reward. While both Morrison and Ched Evans had obvious issues, I dont recall either ever being a “bad egg” in the sense of causing rifts and issues in the squad with behaviour, etc. Certainly not Ched, who all the players at the time seemed genuinely gutted when he went down and who also seemed to get on with everyone when he came back. Morrison I believe, was more of a self destruction problem- not so much a disruptor.

Both were worth a gamble. Rodwell might end up the same- bit harsh on him though, with the timing. That being said, CWAK and the team will learn something about him from how he’s kept up his commitment (or not) over this lockdown time. If he’s worked his ass off to stay fit while on a short term deal, for a club he may never play for again, then he may well have earned himself another year, or at least a good word from Wilder to any potential new club if we decide to move him on.

Players lose their way for many reasons; injuries, personal issues. Some are just replaced by better players at their club. Look how far we’ve come in the last few years. Look at the players we’ve outgrown and moved on. But who wouldn't say the likes of Jake Wright, Richard Stearman, Leon Clarke, Paul Coutts, Martin Cranie and others could make big contributions for other clubs in the Championship or League One? It wasnt any of those lads faults they became surplus. Its just how we evolved.

As long as we avoid the proper dickheads and trouble causers, which I’m certain Wilder wouldn't even entertain, then I say let Chris and Alan loose on the odd reclamation project if they fancy. One will pay off eventually.

I don’t know if I dreamt this as I was listening to Talksport this morning. But I’m sure I heard Sam Allardyce mention that Morrison had to be sedated so they could take his tooth out. One, because he was scared of doctors, dentists, etc and two, because it was so infected he couldn’t play.
