Rational Collins

Collins wouldn't have to keep dishing out bollockings if the rest of the defence stopped dropping bollocks! I think there's more to Collins leadership qualities than just dishing out bollockings. Harry Maguire was often quoted as saying it was great to work alongside Collins as he talked him through many games. I'd imagine much of the anger from Collins is down to him being f***ed off with players switching off when they're supposed to be defending (and Collins is telling them who to pick up) and gifting the opposition soft goals.

He certainly dropped enough bollocks of his own over the years. Reasonable enough at this level, that's about it. I'm sure he tries hard.

I don't doubt that Collins gives it his all but he is just too slow to react to situations at this level. Granted he can get on the end of a corner but he struggles in other areas.

He is just getting worse as he ages and for he probably needs to drop down a division or two.

Agreed, I think Harry benefitted a lot for playing alongside Collins (and before anyone says it, no this is not just because it made Harry look a world beater by comparison!) and I think Collins often covered for him.

Isnt he the only partner Maguire had at first team level ?

He is currently our best (fully fit) genuine centre back at the club.....

....whether that is a good thing or it says a lot about us judge for yourselves but it's true

Fun with numbers:

League appearances made this season by Collins: 16
League goals scored this season by Collins: 3

League appearances made this season by all our central midfielders (Basham, Coutts, Hammond, Reed, Scougall, Baxter, J Wallace): 62
League goals scored this season by all our central midfielders combined: 4 - 3 by Baxter, 1 by Basham

I agree entirely 1DW, just as me knowing nothing about football never stops me from posting!

I just think he needs a bit more balance, if he is constantly bollocking which he sometimes appears to do, I would imagine players just switch off. Yes by all means if needed but not constantly. I wonder how he would react to players barking in his face when he makes an error? Not all errors are through lack of effort or 'can't be bothered'. Maybe a supportive word now and again might be more constructive and ultimately beneficial to the performance of the team.

You may be right mosbolad, it’s hard to say without being privy to all that is said both during the heat of the moment in the games and in private. I honestly don’t know whether his personality is constructive or destructive to the team spirit as a whole. Given the spirit we had in the 2014 run that he was a part of, I’d be inclined to believe he is not a problem overall on that front. I’d say lack of athleticism and certain other players not showing the run through brick walls attitude we crave is a bigger issue.

Basham is the best 'permanent' CH at the club - that's as long as we stop fucking about with him in midfield.

Collins is the second best CH in the club and together [as was the case Saturday] they did a pretty decent job for me. Could we do better in the marketplace, yes, but at the moment Collins has the shirt and the fact 'the powers that be' haven't replaced him isn't the kids fault.

You are absolutely right about getting off his back - as well as others. If they are picked, and if they do their absolute best they shouldn't be hammered. It ain't the players fault and getting on his case every time he makes a mistake (like the prick who sits two rows behind me) will not make him play any better or with more confidence.

Suppose he could always refuse to play?

That’s an interesting one: “Gaffer, I’m not willing to play Saturday. I’m too shit so I’m making this decision for the benefit of the team”.

Only it wouldn’t benefit the team because we don’t have 2 more reliable centre halves.

Some awful defending in the build up to Southend's 2nd goal last week. Well done Collins, your escort duties were exemplary. Have you ever thought about making a tackle or block?
And as for those bigging up Basham at centre back, remember Bradford away? Powder puff is being generous.
2 new first choice centre backs are needed ASAP

“Everyone, hopefully, knows I’ve always given 100 per cent. It might not always have been to the quality some people think it should be or would like, but I’ve always given absolutely everything for this club.

“My appearance record won’t matter when we get promoted.”

For all his many failings as a footballer (which he seems to acknowledge) and prophet, Collins is one of very few who can be relied upon to give everything, every game, irrespective of how well or badly the team is supporting, or the level of abuse he's receiving from supporters. For this he deserves respect.

Never doubted the lad didnt give 100%....but he still isnt a good enough defender.

Could have simply been under instructions to show the guy wide and not jump in, knowing the other guy is easily more skilful and would cut inside and have a better angle to shoot with the nearest defender sitting on his arse. But it's obviously Collins' fault

I don't disagree at all which is at why we need to get off Collo's back - and most of the others, through no fault of their own, are not good enough for the next step up.

Agree BOS, Collins doesn't select himself, it is up to the management at the club to replace him with someone better. Last season it looked like he would never kick another ball for the club, but someone at SUFC made the decision that he would. Most of us accept we need a better back line, but until something is done about it, we have to make do with what we have sadly.

You may be right about Bash, but I wouldn't want him playing there long term, he's not good enough either.

Here's a perfect example. Could have made the block put it in the stands for a corner or throw but shepherds it across the goal into the path of a Worcester player, who fortunately didn't connect. He then barks at Long to deflect any blame. Its on the 10 minute mark.
