Biggest disappoinment of the day was the running out of the award winning Huntsman Pie

It was a penalty

did i spot you handing out leaflets on Sat-di??

Penalty score by Neeskins after 90 odd seconds of Total Football resulted in Cruyff being brought down. Decision was very controversial and England's Jack Taylor evened things up as soon as he could.

Yep, though let me go further. Cruyff kicked of from the centre circled and Holland pinged the ball about like many United fans born after 1975 may never have seen. The ball was passed 13 times by Holland whilst Germany chased shadows in a way that only Nick Montgomery has done better. After 13 passes the ball was passed to player of the tournament Johan Cruyff. He was one of the further back Dutch players and just inside the Germany half. He then advanced forward and left Vogts (no slouch) in his wake only to be cruelly brough down as he went into the area*. The referee pointed to the spot. Neeskens put the penalty away and Holland were one nil up. Maier then picked the ball out of the net. Total football and a majestic move that was worthy of a goal.

* The tackle was right on the edge of the area. It is unclear, even from watching in slow motion, whether it was in or out. Havbign watched it several times just now I would say the initial contact was probably just outside the area. Tough call though as Cruyff was going quickly and part of Hoeness leg was in the area when he hit Cruyff.

You not spreading the gospel in Worksop then Ollie? There's a hell of a lot of uncouth lager drinking natives over there who might benefit from some missionary work. I'd stay clear of the Byron and Shakespeare though, unless you want your head the size of your balls and the rest of you boiled up in a pot for supper. Maybe just ease them in with James Joyce's Ulysses to be on the safe side.

No can do mucker. I left some colouring in book and crayons with Pinch in preparation though just in case. Copies of Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Rood and Three Little Pigs for any advanced hoof loving lager drinkers if we do decide to go ahead. I think the we  hoof brigade will be out drinking lager in numbers though. They will aim to hit us where it hurts (stamping on fingers and cutting off tongues) and hence it could be very dangerous and some battles are better off not being fought.

Another factor is that I don't know if I could hack another hour and a half of watching little 17 year olds making paint drying look interesting. I have spent the whole morning watching Holland ping the ball about in the 1974 world cup final first minute to make me feel better.

Good call leader, good call. If I'd gone wading in there with Joyce, I'd probably have ended up turning on a spit with an apple in my mouth. Still, it would have counted towards my 5 a day…

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

The popularity of RAPFA has gone through the roof. The irresistable attraction of real ale allied to proper football has swept the nation. RAPFA has now gone National and will be known in future as the Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England Real Ale and Proper Football Alliance [WISERAPFA].

Local Branches will continue to thrive: We are now to be known as Blades Real Ale and Proper Football Alliance [BRAPFA]. An announcement will follow shortly from Sheffield 6 about the formation of PRAPFA.

The only disappointment is Chelsea, where progress is said to be slow.

I can't believe nobody has cited the Viz strip yet. (Not that I don't like Real Ale myself, you understand)

I couldn't be arsed with the new total football, and the formation of RAPTA, so i decided to recruit a RAPTA member to go and drink smoothflow whilst watching eggs being chased, on the terraces of the Rapid Solicitors stadium

Reading Ollies report of the day, I'm just glad I couldn't make it on both a football front and the pre match socialising. Normally I will read Ollies stuff (even the shed article was funny for a while). His match reports have been decent in the past. What a load of shite all this is.

- I sometimes drink Real Ale, but it depends on my mood, I'd probably drink a nice, cold, crisp pint of Carling on a British summers day as I do on match days. But I'm not so narrow minded to drink only one type of beverage, lager has its place, the germans are famed for their bier and pils.
- All types of football direct or tippy tappy can be both enjoyable and boring, sounded like the boring tippy tappy was the order of the day.
- As for all the literature bollocks, it has no place in a conversation at the football, I don't have much time to read and if I did it'd more than likely be modern stuff, rather than an old story.
- Political leaning most likely Conservative, although not being a UK resident I don't vote, I find labour repulsive and Tim "nice but dim" in charge of the labour party is just a clown.

All this sub grouping stuff is bollocks and has no place at United, If it means that because I don't drink a particular type of beverage, read a certain book, vote for labour that I am an outcast, then thats all good with me. But its better than following this so called revolution which believes that if you don't agree with a particular element of their manefesto, that you are a fan of long ball and nothing else.

Quite ridiculous and its making this forum a very, very dull place, so I'll start my own ;)

Hear hear, although, i'll disagree on there being a time and a place for carling;)

Pot and kettle, methinks.

Aha, we get the first keyboard strike from one of the we  hoof brigade. Just as your pro lager propaganda fell on deaf ears on Sat-di Swiss, your attempt to belittle RAPFA over the internet will fall on blinds eyes.

What, because I am open to more than just Real ale, books and tippy tappy football?

No, because you're chastising folk for being narrow minded about their drinking whilst going on to say that certain areas of conversation "has no place" at Football.

Nice work Ollie :)

Threads merged.

As quiet as it is, I'm not keen for the forum to be full of one person's repeated attempt at forum apartheid.

Some might say the "joke" is a little laboured for what was essentially a quick pre-match drink for Olle, Pinchy and Eskimo ;)

Jon Bon was there too. And Cassius Kray! We were out in force!? ;)

Suppose I should thank you for inadvertantly giving me another 2 ton thread. Ta.

It's alright, he'll be back at Uni in September - we'll be spared this drivel for the time being then. :hello:

You're making a good contribution to the forum so far mucker. Hey 'we're all Blades aren't we'. Let's meet for a lager shandy at the next home game. See you in the Cricketers at 14:30?

Holland pinged the ball about like many United fans born after 1975 may never have seen.

So you haven't seen this either Ollie? :)

On the subject of total football I had the opportunity to play Saturday football in the Netherlands when I worked there back in 2006.

Total football is a fantastic concept. Its often thought that the concept is to ping the ball about effortleslsy, but it often works because the teams that are able to implement it properly are:

Extremely fit
Players are able to switch positions
The team still maintains a shape.

Having also coached Junior teams and also witnessed attempts at total football in the Netherlands I could talk for hours on this subject, the big mistake in my view is when teams try to play the tippy tappy style without being able to do the basics right.

Pass and move is great whilst you have the ball, but too often you end up with full backs attacking and the position either not being filled or being filled by a winger (for example) who isn't really interested in defending.

England are a perfect example of how not to play football.

The other point to make is that sometimes teams can just counter this very easily by not allowing the opposition to get in behind them for example. Then it comes down to the ability to adapt to another style.

United have this problem. We have been effective in the past couple of years of playing in two ways:

- Using wingers - Wingers on their day can win games, they are often the main supply line to the strikers, but they either need to be able to get around the back and deliver simple balls or can cross a ball properly. All too often this supply line has been blocked off for United so we have had to try plan B
- Grinding results by playing a vast number of hopeful balls (long ball) - Just throwing the ball into the mixer. This worked very well for Warnock and Blackwell because they had the players to deal with it. Less so Blackwell as Henderson was often more of a hinderance.

When you play the latter way, you will get more than your fair share of set pieces (Corners, Throw ins, Freekicks) which you have to take advantage of. United haven't done.

If we go the tippy tappy route, then we have to be prepared to also grind results out and adapt, rather than persist with a formula that doesn't always work.

Just my thoughts for what they are worth
