Ramsdale

As an ex-goalkeeper (an old traditional one I admit), there is an aspect of today’s goalkeeping that is a serious issue in how goalkeepers now perform.

i have observed two dynamics that would never be tolerated in previous coaching curriculums:

a) goalkeepers today do not command the 18 yard box but more specifically the 6 yard box and.

b) there are way too many shots that beat goalkeepers either at the near post or across the body.

As good we we thought Henderson was, he showed these traits.

In my view, Ramsdale is not a premier league goalkeeper because of the lack of skills, decision making, control, and fundamental goalkeeping skills in this crucial area of goalkeeping.

In today’s game, it’s more important for goalkeepers to have foot skills to react to the awful growing trend of passing back to the keeper even from the attacking half of the field.

This is one of the key reasons we will continue to ship in goals...

United pass back to Ramsdale far too many times and it slows up the forward momentum... this is a key part of our game we have to change to survive this season.. plus Ramsdale had to command his 18 yard box...

Absolutely agree. But to be fair I would rather the back-passes go to Ramsdale than Lowe, Lundstram, Norwood or Stevens at the moment.

Exactly ! Did people actually clock Stevens and lowes performances ? Henderson, shilton and lev yashin in goal together wouldn't keep a clean sheet for us at the moment .
If it hadn't been for ramsdale last week, city would have scored 4 or 5

I think Henderson does better on all 4 goals.

I've seen lots of goals which Ramsdale has got his hand to, but he doesn't seem to move his feet when he dives. If he did, he'd stop them. The first goal for Chelsea was no different.

The 2nd goal, he switches off. Gives away a needless corner. Then watches the ball sail across his 6 yard box at head height and then he lamely dives to the ground, making it an easy finish for Chilwell. Pathetic goalkeeping.

Their 3rd. Again, no command of his area. Comes out, gets caught in no man's land, Silva heads in.

The 4th. Trickier, but he goes to ground so early and makes himself as small as possible. It lacks bravery.

I'm not saying all 4 goals were his fault directly, but I do feel at the minute - if there's a chance it will go in, it will go in. He's not stopping anything that I wouldn't expect to be bread & butter & he's letting goals in that I don't think a PL keeper should be. The most concerning part is I don't know if he has the natural athleticism to fix some of these problems.

I understood going for him over Cakir given the circumstances with the pandemic & the ease in which he'd settle into the squad, but... in hindsight, the stats told us how good of a keeper Ramsdale was. And they didn't paint a strong enough picture to support £18m.

Of course, I'm talking with hindsight, but I'm not paid to get these decisions right.

agree 100% with all of this.

The bigger question is, we can all see it. Why cant wilder? Too loyal? Oblivious to the errors? There's a reason he still selects him after so many errors.

Confidence is a wonderful thing and having a confident keeper who expects to keep a clean sheet is probably the most important benefit to a team, just ahead of a striker who expects to score every game. We have neither right now.

A problem with Ramsdale could be that he came here having conceded in virtually every game last season in a relegation bound Bournemouth side but let’s remember that he was voted their player of the season. Fans and critics alike said that he was outstanding, but he has become conditioned to NOT expect to keep a clean sheet just like most of our ‘strikers‘ have become conditioned NOT to expect to score a goal. The only way we are going to get out of this mess is by Ramsdale keeping clean sheets and the likes of McBurnie and Brewster getting off the Mark and then hopefully confidence will flow throughout the team and we’ll see where we’re really at.

But while we’re quite right to question Ramsdale, I don’t think Henderson would have faired much better behind this defence. Let’s not forget he had very little to do in most games last season and his main strength was keeping his concentration for few occasions that he was called upon. Ramsdale is being peppered with shots and having to make several saves most games and I think that him not having much confidence of those in front of him is as big a problem as his own. It’s the polar opposite of how Henderson must have felt, it’s a two way thing. Shocking defending particularly down our left side continually leading to unmarked headers and shots going in on our goal from open play and from set pieces throughout the game. It’s something that was unthinkable most of last season but it was there for all to see again and it was obvious again last night that teams are targeting that flank and that side of our box. Lowe isn't ready yet and Steven’s isn’t disciplined or good enough in the air to play left centre back. Wilder’s got to get Steven’s back to LWB/FB and come up with something using Robinson or Jags or change the formation, but even with a back 4 two right footed centre backs won’t be ideal.

Somehow we’ve got to hang on in there against the ‘lesser’ teams and address it in January (assuming there‘s any money left in the kitty), but it’s not going to be easy and the window may come too late. Not bringing in a quality replacement for Jack O’Connel is Wilder‘s biggest mistake in my opinion, and Ramsdale although he’s not blameless is more of a symptom of our poor defending not the main cause of it.

I can’t be arsed reading a lot of the reactionary bollocks on here, but this is an evident truth. The left side of our team has been ruined by injury, and we can’t play with a half a side. Ramsdale isn’t the biggest problem here.

We can’t afford premier league seasoned backups, so we’re inevitably in a lot of trouble. Norwich suffered similarly last season and eventually they collapsed. It takes multiple years to get to, say, Southampton’s squad strength.

It’s a tenuous existence at this level. Those pointing at minor tweaks in selection or tactics as if they’re easy solutions are dreaming. I said in the summer that selling JOC could relegate us. His injury is a far worse outcome as we can’t replace his class and contribution across the pitch.

Circle the wagons, get Fleck and Mousset fit, and work frickin hard. If we’re in range at Christmas we can perhaps survive. But if we go down, learn from 2007 and keep toys in prams.

Our scouting for Ramsdale must have been done by a blind man.
And for McBurnie.
90 minutes watching either of these two would have put me off for good.
Eddie Howe conned CW into Moose , a half-baked personality who's also generally unfit.
Brewster cost 23m after half a season in the Championship !
Robinson & Freeman also cost decent money and are now declared unsuitable.
Bogle & Lowe were unnecessary when we needed creativity going forward.
And JoC should have gone for his operation and been properly replaced many months ago.
Lundstram should have been shipped out and replaced.
Our recruitment and reaction to injuries and contract rebel has been suicidally incompetent.
We've spent £117m on fees since promotion and only Berge deserves to hold down a place.
Colin was found out once he reached the PL - CW has had £ to spend but mainly wasted it.
I can't see the Prince giving him any more.
Which means either no more signings or the sack for CW.
I don't know which of those gives us any hope of avoiding the drop.

The drop off to the sub keepers is Everest sized

I'm massively frustrated that we aren't even trying to adapt to the newer players but maybe it just is the fact that without Henderson, JOC, Fleck/Moose playing well we just don't have enough good players

Ramsdale isn't the problem but he's certainly not the solution either. Feels the same for all our newer players

Ramsdale is generally a good shot stopper, but lacking in everything else that makes a good keeper. His positioning isn't great, his distribution is poor, command of the area is non existent and it'd take a lot of pressure off the team and himself if he just caught the bloody ball more often. He's not our biggest problem, but he hasn't been good enough.

My biggest issue with him is his goalie top, the green and purple keeper shirts are nice, but instead he's wearing some crap with blue trim on it, which is just wrong for a Blades shirt.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but Ramsdale is 2 years younger than Henderson. To put that into perspective Henderson had played no games in the Premier league at his age. Instead of trying to destroy the lads confidence, let's get behind him and see where it takes us. Henderson used us as a stepping stone (no problem with that), and had no interest in signing permanently. Ramsdale is the future. He's not become a bad keeper overnight (he's the current England under 21 keeper), but unfortunately he's come to a team that's struggling at the minute. If he'd had O'connell in front of him, he'd look a lot better than he looks at the minute, and no one says anything. As I said before, get behind the lad and help build his confidence.

We have done all these terrible things but still ended up in the premier league after being bottom half league 1! Must have just been pure luck 🤷‍♂️

Despite what was obviously a shaky game for him last night, I think Ramsdale is the least of our worries. Ramsdale will constantly be compared to Henderson, which I don't agree with (but am about to do it anyway). I honestly think if we had Henderson in goal we'd have exactly the same number of points on the board. We'd probably have conceded fewer v Chelsea and maybe Wolves, but I don't think Ramsdale has cost us points.

The left side of the pitch on the other hand has been a complete disaster.. Robinson isn't good enough, Enda is so far off form and Osborn / Lunny make zero impact. I honestly don't think we truly noticed and appreciated how good JOC was last season. He's dominant in the air, always shows for the ball and has an engine that shouldn't be possible for a man of that frame.

Wilder has made a serious error that's cost us points and goals. It isn't signing Ramsdale though, it's not signing cover for Jack.

it’s the same reason he selects Lundstram. The alternatives are much, much worse.

He does this because he left himself short in this area by not bringing in a CM in the window, same as LCB. Even stranger he let Freeman go out on loan.
