Radio???? Oh yes I remember. That's that pre smartphone thingy that the bloke 2 rows in front of us on the kop used to have in his ear all game. We'd have our eyes on the game and half an ear on him, waiting for him to shout "t'pigs r loosin". Then we'd begin a round of "Sheffield Wednesday's fucked it up again".

Them wot'days!

James Whale still does a regular evening show on Talk radio with his Brunmie side kick Ash. Think he only does 1 or 2 nights a week now because he has terminal cancer and was told about a year ago that he has about a year to live.

He’s talks about his cancer on his show and says instead of feeling sorry for himself he’s been very lucky, had a great life and he’s determined to carry on as normal until the very end.
Yes I've followed him around on the radio for years. Sometimes feel though that Ash butts in too much and should only be on in small doses.
His book goes into detail about his illness, background and life on radio. It's a good read.

I'll always remember the night he walked out in the middle of the show. The night after the head of the station was on, think it was her that we t on to be on look north and got done for not paying tax, said he would never work for the station again and he was finished in the industry. He was back on air the week after!!

Been all downhill since Rony Robinson retired. Used to love his long rambling interviews with completely random people. "And where did you go to school? ... And who was headmaster there then? Was it Mr Satterthwaite?"

Not usually my cup of tea. But was very ill about 25 years ago, and his soothing tones and absolute mundane drivel was very comforting. I actually personally thanked him at Totley Library. He was very bemused.

I actually don’t mind Staton. Remember when we had the Triple Assault Season? Paul Walker dictated and it was wall to wall fawning over us. Depends on who the presenter is, they’re going to have their own bias.

Actually think Staton isn’t that bad, the fact that there was debates about which side he supported probably exemplifies that.

I don’t live in the area so only listen if driving back from the game, which I haven’t done in about 5 years.

Honestly, listen to other counties/cities radio stations and realise how lucky you are, although I’m not sure if they’ve caught up yet. If you were driving back from Stoke, Leeds, East Midlands etc. after an away game a few years ago, you’d realise how lucky we were to have Walker et al.

It's more or less the sausage rohl show, every night this week hes been dissecting the Wendy's loss at Millwall, and trying to assure the S6 mob that Danny will sort it!.... with a bit of Barry Bunnion talk as well. Other clubs caller seem to get wafted away pretty quickly. He seems to know his stuff, but comes across as an arrogant twat!!

Hi all, we read all feedback (even negative) and take it on board. We also appreciate passions run high in the city and the region. To push back a little bit here, the show in question started with a Rotherham caller, then a Wednesday caller, then a Blade, then another Wednesday caller, before finishing with a couple of Barnsley fans. It was a mix of views and one of the Wednesday calls spent as much time reflecting on attitudes towards changes in football than anything else. Certainly the show wasn't steered towards Wednesday and I don't think anyone listening would agree with that.

We're passionate about all of our clubs and just try to put on an entertaining show whilst providing a platform for fans to have their say. We have live guests in the studio, we do regular interviews with the clubs and we have our matchday coverage too. It comes with the territory that we won't please everyone all of the time but we do our best.

Enjoy the international break and we'll be back previewing the return of the Championship next week.
Staton isn’t even trying to hide it now. He is without question 100% pig. He’s spent the entire show talking about the cunts tonite really pisses me off 😡
No he didn’t at all and when he did it was a balanced objective response

Stop feeling so inferior FH is ok sometimes its very good -appreciate what we have - compared to other regions FH is streets ahead than most of them

The celebrity callers are pretty boring and predictable tho’

Night time radio has never been the same since James Whale finished. Used to be on radio aire late 80s early 90s. He was the first that they all tried to copy.

I remember that, what was his catchphrase, summat like "the woodwork creaks out come the freaks"?

Not sure if it was him or another late night show, where they used to ring random celebrities up unannounced. I remember one where they rang Gerry Anderson pretty late and he was half asleep and about to go to bed. Quite weird.

I tune in sometimes on the way home from work. How about renaming it the Rob Staton show? He certainly loves the sound of his own voice. I’m not as keen and have to change station.

Sorry mate completely disagree on Staton. As I’ve said if he simply came out and admitted it I would have a problem but he just hasn’t got the minerals to do it.

Agree with you on the comparison to other regions though.

He comes across as arrogant because he generally puts forward a strong argument using facts and logic.
Although he does have an ego and doesn't appear to like being challenged/ disagreed with.....so he can become a little abrasive.
Unless you're at a good level of communication and intelligence then it might make a caller feel intimidated.
I prefer it this way......because when callers talk shit......he actually challenges them to justify their comments.

This week the general theme has been the fagility of support and the speed that supposed fans, like to criticise.
He directed his complaint against the Rotherham fans for their big expectation regards being promoted this season.
So when they win....it's classed as normal with little praise but when they lose....then some callers severely criticise the manager and their owner.

His other complaint was directed as Wednesday fans for criticising Barry Bannon.
FWIW over the years he tends to criticise SWFC, Chansiri and Wednesday fans whilst he tends to be more complementary about United.
Hence why on Owlstalk they don't like Radio Sheffield because they generally bash their club....they call it Radio Sheffield United.
Andy Giddings (Halifax fan) always seems to be more pro United compared to Wednesday, he complements SUFC and has subtle digs at SWFC.

Statons point is that Bannon is a modern day legend at the club but is getting older and has strengths and weaknesses.
When SWFC win....all Owls rate BB as one the best and rave about his strengths
but a week later after a defeat then some fans are so quick to say BB is past it and the weak link in their side.
They say he's the reason for the defeat when the week earlier apparently he was the reason for the win.

Staton was making an excellent point about how fickle and impatient football fans have become.
When there's little football action......there's less callers....so Staton and Co are coming up with points to try to encourage callers.

But is the format a football phone in or is it the Staton hour?
The bits I heard this week were mainly Staton defending Bannan and Rohl. His defence of Rohl was almost like he was part of a cult.

Similar when it came up on the old electronic scoreboard

Surely you mean 'wireless'? 🤣

He definitely likes the sound of his own voice, he talks over people and rubbishes their opinions if they don't match his (Giddings and Oxley don't do that).

I get the feeling that if he could do away with callers altogether, he'd cope :)

I think giddings prefers the blades as you can tell in his voice the excitement when a goal goes in and also when Wednesday concede. I could be way of the mark but just my opinion.

Staton is a Pig, but in the past we have had Walker and Bennett who are both Blades, and often didn't hide it that well. Giddings also seems to lean towards us more than the Pigs imo.

One thing I will say for Staton is that he doesn't take any shit from the deluded who call in and usually dishes out a few home truths and the odd reality check. I think he is quite good at what he does.

People still listen to Radio Sheffield?
He is a pig though, we already knew that didn't we? I find him really arrogant and unlikable as well, but maybe that goes hand in hand.
He’s developed Paul Walker disease.

His home truth seems to be that you can’t criticise Bannan or Rohl because they saved them from relegation last season. He is quite good at getting this point across. Again and again.

“sausage Rohl, Barry Bunnion “, you’re so irreverent

Used to be a great station but now they struggle to get anyone to call during the week and pretend to be Smith and Jones to use up the time. And then we have to listen regularly to Mick the Deluded Parkgate Pig and another , coincidentally enough, Mick the Equally Deluded Pig. can't believe I miss the Pitsmoor Pillock. Used to get up to the daily early morning shows but now it's a disgrace. Ellie Squeaky voice and when she's not on the probable worst in RS history, Becky, don't you love to hear me, Measures. Bring Toby back, quick or get Paulette up a bit earlier. Still it does have the excellent John Kane's Northern Soul show.

To be fair I haven't listened to FH once this season, so I am probably a bit out of date on that one.

I used to listen to it whenever I was in the car but I can't now with that Ellie and Becky measures . Can't stand the pair of em. There was a clip last week from them where that Ellie is trying a joke out on Paulette Edwards and didn't work at all. Paulette face was a picture of disgust and she just walked out of the studio. You get the impression when watching it they don't get on.

I rarely listen to it nowadays, for various reasons but did a lot years ago and what I will say is I don’t have a problem with the balance of their content or output.

I’ve heard shows heavily tilted towards United in the past and I think in general the Sheffield clubs get the lion’s share of coverage on there due to size of fanbase. I think some of it is weighted towards incoming messages and calls or current news coming out of each club.

Imagine supporting Rotherham or Donny and wanting to hear some chat about them. 5 minutes every night.
