Who has the all-time most assists for Sheffield United?

Assists have only been officially recorded in recent times, so nobody will ever really know the answer to this. However, we can speculate, so I’d be interested to see your theories. Here are my thoughts:

- Was Tony Currie here for long enough to accumulate the kind of totals that other ‘club servants’ might have managed?
- Could it be someone like Harry Johnson, who has the most goals?
- Joe Shaw has most appearances but I doubt he got that many assists.
- Ernest Needham?
- Billy Gillespie?
- Jimmy Hagan?

If I had to bet, would probably go for Jimmy Hagan.

"Assists" should never have existed.
We play football, not "soccer".
It is one of those stats which provides misleading results, deflections sometimes counting etc You often get players such as Fleck who may win the ball in midfield, create space, deliver a defence splitting pass for someone else to cross the ball for a tap-in and it's the middle man who gets the 'all-important' assist.

Duffy's ball to Freeman for Sharp's equaliser on Saturday being a perfect example.

The Telegraph's fantasy football tried to refine it a couple of years ago by awarding points for a key contribution for a goal rather than purely an assist, sometimes awarding points to two or more players in the build up to a goal. I could see what they were trying to do, but it was then contentious as to what was a key contribution and what wasn't.

Agree. What, exactly is an assist? Possibly the greatest goal I've ever seen (Peschisolido v Forest) saw him take 9 or 10 touches before he scored. Was it down to an 'assist' by Paddy Kenny?

At 11:13 (although you could be excused for watching the lot :))

MOTM - Des Walker

Dean Hammond although you’d not have noticed of course.
