Got to be one of the strangest matches I’ve been to. New manager, completely different football philosophy to what we’re used to.

We knew before the match that we were some way from being the finished product both in bringing personnel in and getting them up to speed with the tactics.

That said, I’m surprised at how long the list of issues to address is at present.

Hamer - I’ve always wanted Gus to play central and be more involved. I’ve always seen him as a ten, yesterday highlighted all the downsides Gus has to his game and robbed us of the creative magician we saw last season. When a team has Scott Twine, the last thing you do is give free kicks away on the edge of your own box.

Peck - he’s not a defensive midfielder in a single pivot. That’s not to say he won’t be a few years down the line, but in the here and now it’s not happening. I’m not entirely sure where we move him in this system, I love Sydie Peck, just not sure how we utilise him.

Cannon - not a winger, never will be against competitive opposition. We didn’t use him right last season, didn’t play to his strengths at all. That said, at least he was in the right position, just not utilised correctly.

One - looked incredibly raw, was really hoping for him to step up as the season goes on. Not the best start, looked in need of a loan, it’s only a short run out though so feel very harsh writing this.

CB - already covered all over this message board. Not against letting Robbo leave as he won’t work in this system, we need 2 replacements in 1st though, plus a third before the window shuts.

Spine - we don’t have one, without the ball we look soft, weak, far too easy to play through, we missed Vini and need Soumare to be the real deal, we also need cover incase he’s injured. Alzate and hughes provides the spine at Hull, we’re going to need similar.

The press - give it time, didn’t really work yesterday but it’s going to take some time to refine.

Positives.

Bindon - looked good given the circumstances. Composed on the ball, did well defensively given the complete exposure and chaos.

O Hare - looks like he will thrive this season, attacking football played to his strengths.

Barry - had McCrorie chasing shadows.

The Chaos - Selles described organised chaos, we saw it in spells with the attacking patterns. Burrows and Seriki were the highest players on the pitch at points, fluid movement of midfield, it was hard to work out what was going on and Bristol City struggled with our attacks on these periods, dropped off as the game went on probably due to the score.

Campbell - looks like the system will suit, wouldn’t be surprised to see him hit 20 league goals.

Overall, we’re desperately short of players in key areas. Expect some recruitment in key areas, Selles needs backing.

The Chaos would be a great name for the south stand ultras.

With the addition of 2x CB, RB and CDM I believe we’re in good shape. Despite the scoreline, I saw a lot (1st half) of positives in our game.
Of course we were defensively frail and were punished at every opportunity, but with the right recruitment this problem can be addressed.
With regards to our outgoings, I saw it as good business, not ‘asset stripping’ as some have alluded to. Vini and Anel didn’t want to be here and Moore simply didn’t work out for us.
I would have liked to see Soumaré yesterday, and preferred Ukaki at RW as oppose to Cannon, who I believe should play down the middle.
On that note, I thought Campbell looked really sharp and took his goal well. O’Hare looked good and Barry, who once fully fit, will create lots of chances I’m sure!
We know where we need to strengthen, let’s get that business done and get this season off and running! UTB ⚔️

The midfield just doesn't work for me. O'Hare is really a 10 not an eight. He's encouraged to help lead the press when we don't have the ball. That leaves the midfield exposed as Gus just isn't disciplined enough to sit and track runners and Peck isn't experienced enough to play as a 6 and also loses his shape. This together with the fullbacks both bombing on leaves us completely exposed both down the middle and to a ball over the top into the channels.

Having two centres halves one whose never played a championship game and the other who's hardly played any competitive football for years, other than one horrendous showing in the cup last year v Cardiff just compounded the problem.
We have big issues. They need a solution quickly.

I called this football yesterday by us as chaotic, its under 11 style football.

If we get to the end of August without bringing in the players that we all know we are short of.......it will have all the hallmarkings of when Hecky was stitched up in the Prem and we endured a season of thrashings.

Only 3 issues really.

Completely new philosophy and tactics at odds with current players
Players played out of position, square pegs and round holes, some may never fit this system.
Additions needed in key positions

Apart from RND and Brooks I thought the rest were reasonably ok in trying to make it work, in what was a totally unfamiliar system. They were surely playing according to Selles instructions, I see no other reason for the set up.

RND, I feel sorry for him, but Brooks, I am not sure he has got it in him, looks lightweight and lacking confidence to do what we know he can do, but doesn’t,

Brooks and McCallum are all LEFT FOOT.
BOTH played on the RIGHT.
Both have spent their entire lives on the left - until Wilders insanity last season and his Pepshit Coco copying.
When better player Brooks (etc) played out of position but lesser player Mac stayed on his correct side.
Yesterday Selles took this insanity further.
IT WAS COMICAL watching McCallum struggle so badly - but understandably.
DO YOU NOT SEE THE INSANITY AND THEIR PROBLEMS?
