Prince ?

International pressure is the only way to change Saudi culture, not SUFC. However due to money, it’s unlikely any real pressure will be applied. Take the WWE as an example, they love to promote women in wrestling and equality, but that goes out the window when the Saudis offer a deal worth $450m and the women aren’t allowed to work!

I just don't think we should give in that easily. I don't think it's the only way, and SUFC can play a part, however small, in pushing back against these types of attitudes. It's not that hard.

Some people are acting like the Prince is in the majority here when he isn't (or at least I thought so before reading some of the responses on this thread). He's still in the minority culture in this country and we're perfectly entitled to remind him of our values.

I wouldn't expect to go on a bar crawl in Saudi Arabia, no matter how rich I was.

There's much hypocrisy about on these matters.

This board isn't even a drop in the ocean but you only have to look at how many posters on here have strong views on certain issues, but will happily turn a blind eye if it doesn't suit the agenda.

I assume you haven’t been to the lane since the Prince arrived I take it?

Where have I said it’s fine? It’s clearly not acceptable in this day and age no matter what culture, but I am also a realist.

If the Saudis don’t want a woman serving them, then what is it going to achieve by having a young lady serving them? It’s just likely to cause confrontation and it wouldn’t be right putting a young lady in that situation.

Then hopefully the Prince won't become our sole owner......but in the mean time, let's not forget those values that are fundamental to our way of life, otherwise where will it end?

Let the Prince, and those who support his value system, follow their beliefs somewhere that accepts them.....but it's not the isle that we live on, so why there's any suggestion that the club accommodates the Prince's belief is worrying. If he should become our owner I will give serious thought to not supporting the Blades all the while the Prince is at our helm, such is my depth of feeling that to segregate women is at all acceptable...it's not, in fact it's an antiquated and horrible value system.

Strategically, and I must stress that what happened to the waitress needs to be confirmed, I think that it's appropriate for those who support this club to make their feelings known, in whatever way is socially acceptable. Whether that's by using banners at games, especially when TV cameras are there, writing on this forum or the local or national press, phone-ins, and whatever type of demonstration supports their opposition to the Prince. It might not seem to amount to much, but out of small ripples larger ones grow. Either that or remain silent and appear to collude with this dreadful belief.

If any female supporters are reading this, how do you feel about being excluded in any area of life?

Not going if we take Ched back, not going if we sign Harewood and SUFC can fuck right off if bastard Madine comes on loan. The Prince taking control will have a smiler effect on attendances. (not that I want him to take control)

No laughing matter then?

What about it?
If he’d had his way, would that have got us second in the Championship? Clough arguably benefitted most, in relative terms, from the Prince’s investment and failed.

Money is useless in the wrong hands.

Fine whataboutery :)

If this was our lass I'd have beat up his body guards then give him a very stiff talking to.

And? Should a country as welcoming and as inclusive as the UK be all of a sudden up in arms because a man from a different country wants to uphold his beliefs? Really?
Try upholding progressive and humanitarian beliefs where he comes from, and see how welcoming and inclusive the regime is!

If the story is true, it's a case of a football club owner discriminating against women. What's your view on that?
It could be something that his aides do as a matter of routine wherever he turns up.
The man himself may be completely unaware.
It would be interesting to know who asked who from the Club/Caterers to do what exactly.

Fuck all.

Just like some of the other types on here who would be up in arms if right wing knuckle draggers were discriminating against women staff at the Lane.

All about the agenda.

Exactly. It's hardly 'inclusive' to exclude half the population is it?

And it's not wrong to be intolerant of intolerance. Some on here have their logic completely the wrong way around on this.

Go on - I'll bite. But the question itself implies some kind of "otherness". I mean, how would you feel? I probably feel the same.

In reality, it's tiring, but women of my generation are used to it. Most of my secondary school education happened before the Equal Opportunities and Sex Discrimination Acts, and I and other girls my age were not allowed to study what we wanted to study but were made to study some things that I was really not good at - and didn't want to be. But they were the girls' subjects. So we were excluded from certain paths of study and therefore jobs.

The fight for equality is not just about not being allowed to serve someone I wouldn't even want to talk to. And while I applaud this thread's welcome but somewhat unusual foray into feminism, the majority of men that I was brought up with, and have studied and worked with, see equality as something women have to earn. That it's something that men bestow if we behave properly. That it's how we want to be "treated". Rather than it being a fact of life. That's the real issue.

Ask yourself why women have to be concerned about what we wear, whether we can walk home alone, who we need to worry about. Then have a look at some of the avatars in use on this board. Have a read of some of the words used as insults by one man to another, some of the words used to describe female athletes and other women and ask yourself if this is a welcoming space. I'm not banned from participating but excluded? Very often. As I said, it's tiring.

That made me feel very humble. I'm glad you posted it.
I hope it makes a few on here more than humble but in some cases I doubt it.
You should post more. Not necessarily on matters of equality. This board could use an IQ uplift.

That’s not the point. His home country isn’t as progressive and/or as inclusive as ours. Is his sexist attitude part of his religious beliefs? If it is, then I dare say criticizing his religion will leave you on very dodgy ground.

Ainsley Harriott I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. We're free to criticise religion in this country. I'm an atheist. People are free to criticise that. I don't mind them criticising. Because that allows me to say I think organised religions like Christianity & Islam are ridiculous. That doesn't mean I hate anyone & everyone who follows Christianity & Islam, it means I think organised religion is ridiculous. And..... what someone's religion apparently says does not give them a free pass. If they say or do something that I disagree with, then we're allowed to say so - irrespective of what their religion says about it.

Surely the Saudi Royal Family are about as 'right wing' as you can get? ;)

I don’t remember anyone having an issue when the Prince became co-owner, yet we all knew about the Saudi culture

Whilst I didn’t make a banner or write to my MP I have always felt uneasy about the Saudi links. The government (ours) are complicit in sponsoring war crimes inYemen carried out by Saudis. The culture is as far removed from my liberal sensibilities as it can get. Even if someone pumped hundreds of millions in it doesn’t disguise this. In fact it would probably make me less attached to the club.

Go and criticise religion (a specific one) on social media or any other public platform and see where it gets you.

Again, he’s here for the weekend and probably 3 hours at a game. We’re getting pissed off and uppity because a man doesn’t want serving by a woman.

Fuck. Me.

Not good. At all. If true

Let's not let factual accuracy come into play on the topic, D04. It's not what social media was invented for. Wild supposition is the driving force. Usually at this point on the twitter timeline, a single unsubstantiated tweet has provoked planned boycotts and death threats to be issued. ;)

Here you go. S2 4SU is Social Media. S2 4SU is a Public Platform. I already have criticised organised religion as ridiculous, specifically Christianity & Islam, in my previous post. And, I'm happy to do so again. Completely ridiculous. Where do you think it's going to get me? Burn in Hellfire? I'll take my chances. There is a vast chasm between criticising Islam as a religion & being Islamaphobic. I respect & accept people's religious views, they're wrong of course. Third time, I criticise organised religion, including Islam.

I always presumed royalty had their own staff. I’m almost certain that if our royalty visit anywhere then they would have their own staff, security and would be kept separate to the other boxes on security reasons. Let’s say Prince Harry / William etc paid a visit to the Lane; then I reckon the girl who posted the tweet would be told the same - you’re not to serve or go into that box today. It’s really a nothing story imo.
Depends if there was no service, in which case you are correct, or the female was simply replaced by another male member of the regular staff based purely on her gender.

You are criticising the generalities of the edifice and not the specifics. Safer ground, innit.

Why not interview the girl then, establish the facts?
Before Fatty Samuels gets hold of it.
Not sure the club would want this in a paper and I doubt a local paper would want to print it. If the facts really are as reported it doesn't look great.
