So, if you get up this morning and decide that you want to go to see United and you want to pay on the gate it will cost you £29 to see star attractions Preston North End.

You'll be in the cheap seats on the Kop though, but if you're under 5' 6" tall, like standing up every two minutes and have a long neck so that you can see round the posts you'll be fine.

Except don’t pay in the gate as that’s not an option either! Queue at the ticket office just to rub your nose in it !! Or order on line and pick up at collection point to quicken process.

Does anyone think the club might not actually want to encourage pay on the day punters? Serious question. Do they do this to encourage more online sales/season tickets/mini season tickets?

Well of course they do it to encourage more online sales/season tickets, and so they should. I don't know the exact figures, but I'd guess that "transient" customers, i.e. those that just decide to go on the spur of the moment, are less than 5% of the total. So the club is right to give priority to those who plan ahead to spend their money with them. The trick though is not to discourage those who don't.

A bit more thought than "where did the opponent finish in the league last year" needs to be applied to the categorising. You'd like to think they take each case on its merits - but it's never seemed to me like they do

Saturday 22nd September, Kick Off 3:00pm

Fans attending Saturday's Sky Bet Championship encounter against Preston North End at Bramall Lane are advised to give themselves more time for their journey to and from the heart of the city.

This is owing to a large number of University students expected to arrive in Sheffield on Saturday, with the majority likely to be heading into the city centre and many on and around Bramall Lane, thus potentially making traffic heavier than normal on a matchday.

Travelling throughout the city on Saturday is expected to be significantly slowly (sic), including public transport, so please arrive at the Lane early to avoid potentially missing the start of the game against Alex Neil's side.

Supporters are reminded that the turnstiles across the stadium open 90 minutes prior to kick-off.

Sheffield United v Preston North End
EFL Sky Bet Championship

This match is a Category A fixture.

Tickets are on sale now.

Tickets are priced from £27 adults, £22 Seniors, £17 Young Adults/Students and £12 juniors (£9 Junior Blades).

I've heard the fucking lot this week - 'weather', 'football traffic', 'roadworks' and now 'Fresh Meat Week'.

I'm so happy the majority of my time following the blades was pay on the day, none of this ticket shit, also one price for all walk up fans. But, I'm sure others find the online way better. Not for me.

I understand the categorisation to allow cheaper games, and tbh I think United have done well for years by and large on pricing, but I do find this game odd for Cat A.

That's a good point Carlton, but at what stage do they do the categorising? My understanding is they do it before the season starts, so the best evidence they've got to go on is where the teams finished last season. That seems perfectly reasonable to me. The club will need to plan out how many fixtures are going to be designated, A, B, whatever, to be able to forecast revenues before the season starts.
Also, don't forget, Preston finished higher than us last season. We are only 8 games into this one and Preston look poor don't they? But few would have predicted that.

Best post I've read this year.

There's now literally no other home fixture in this league that could possibly be considered as less than category A.

Indeed. They used category B on Wednesday night for Birmingham, but it seems that will be extremely rare.

The club has now announced the Wigan game as a category A fixture. I mean seriously, Wigan Athletic? That really must set the benchmark for unattractive fixtures. Presumably, somebody in the club believes that their recent time in the Premier League and freak FA Cup win, makes them a big draw.

What's more, the Wigan game is in another week of 2 home games, as we have the category A fixture against Stoke on the Tuesday.

Fair to say, that the club is effectively killing off 'pay on the day' walk-up, as evidenced in the fall off in gates to date.

Said the same as the OP the other day when I saw the prices for this game

No offence to Preston but it's hardly a glamour match and esp as we seem to of played them about a 1 ,000 times in the last 10 years or so ! And none of those matches have really been classics (the Po semi obviously a highlight in terms of results !)
Watch it be a 5-4 classic now !

For the occasional fans at these prices it will prob be a no go ! Just daft pricing by the power that be

I've flown in from the IOM for this match....However, I also have another 9 nights hereSpoons Ecce Road with my lad pre match. Here'so hoping for the RAWW to make my trip worthwhile. UTB!

I may be wrong in this, but would the fact that Preston are quite close and may bring a few be the thinking behind the Cat A? I was under the impression that we can only charge the away fans what we're charged?

Because this was classed as Category A based on last season's finishing positions and Preston were expected to be a team pushing for promotion?
Possibly!

Maybe, but Hull is a category A game, and they were shit last season. Yorkshire though I suppose.

Wigan is category A and they were in League 1.

Let’s see...

Category A
Wednesday
Leeds
Forest
Villa
Boro
WBA
Derby

Category B
Rotherham
Hull
Brentford
Stoke
Norwich
Blackburn
Birmingham
Swansea

Category C
Wigan
Reading
Ipswich
Preston
QPR
Millwall
Bolton
Bristol City

A few borderline between B and C, but generally it’s pretty straight forward. Don’t think there’s much debate over that top 7 anyway.

Lets face it the club are trying to maximise revenue without jacking the STs up too much. A 24k cat A is going to bring in much more than a 25k Cat B, which is the most that could be expected for this game. Its a back door price increase, thats all.

Pffft, from that effort you aint ever gonna work in the SUFC Ticket Office

You need to be creative (twatish)

For example, over the years

£1 for postage
£1 processing fee
£1 booking fee
£1 cat food fee
