great post sums up my feelings as well
I think if Wilder starts Donovan but then brings him off on 70 mins which he might do and BBD comes on and we then draw Wilder will face criticism for not leaving Donovan on and for sitting on a lead; I've definitely seen people saying that.
Wilder mark 3 is not vastly different to mark 1, it's more that he inherited some decent players in League One, Bash, Coutts, Sharp and Freeman, and added to it with Fleck, Duffy, JOC etc. In league one he had the luxury of bedding in some younger players into a winning side.
At present a lot of the better players have been sold, and the budget is much less, there's still some expensive players on decent money who are taking up the budget like McGuiness (I'm actually a fan of him mind) and we're in a league which is unforgivable. I think Wilder shows his frustration that there's a sizeable portion of the fan base who expect us to be where we were 7/8 years ago. I've heard all the arguments against Wilder but I'm sorry I don't agree with most of them.
As I've said many times too, we do need to evolve into a modern recruitment model utilising foreign players but that all costs money, probably more than what we currently can afford because we need quality, not average foreign players who are no better than what we have
I think we assess at the end of this season where we're at, hopefully next season we can push on a little more. In the meantime I think Wilder has took the safer option going with players he knows. Personally I agree, but I accept it's not an exciting season at all, it reminds me of where Warnock was in his 2nd or third season when we were low mid table but fans expected better.
Fans were calling for Warnocks head then too. It was after the Millwall match at the end of the season. Next season we finished second but Warnock got backed finally rather than relying on free transfers and small fees like Kabba.
I think Wilder is the scapegoat for how meh this season is when it's largely not his s fault. In fact to me he's the wallpaper keeping the wall from falling down with huge gaps behind.
