23/10/26 Press Conference Summary - Derby home
out all day on a session yesterday so wasn't up to doing this this morning. Heavily paraphrased summary.
Doesn't look like many of Uganda Blade 's list got addressed apart from Donovan.
Andy Giddings
Femi Seriki fitness update, how is he regards tomorrow?
- available
How pleasing is it to have him back?
- yes, have missed the likes of Harrison,Femi, Ryan and Chong. Think you've seen the impact of their (3 out of the 4) return recently. Do they go straight back in? - don't have the option of reserve games now so more complicated. Ryan good when he came on v Lincoln and on saturday, and Harrison was outstanding. Getting Femi back gives us a really good option in that position.
And also options to change formation during games?
- yes, not stuck on one formation. Also saw that saturday with Romelle and Ryan coming on and getting us up pitch.
Where is One with getting back to 100% fit.
-has to build up those minutes. 15/16 man game these days, need to utilise subs. Ryan's going to play a part, young lad, had a good preseason, delighted he's back.
How do you assess Donovan's progression and usefulness at the moment?
- young player playing at championship level - no guarantees when talk to Brentford, I'd never give guarantees to clubs where we send players on loan to either, it's a squad game, has to be comp for places. Delighted with Rom's attitude and can play right or left, can start or come on - he understands 3 points is most important thing.
OK what does he need to do then to get more minutes?
- I don't understand what (the question is)
Well, if he is to become a regular starter
- Chong played on Satdi because he played well on wednesday night. Get an opportunity, play well and you put yourself in the manager's thoughts. Have to change things to suit. Pat could have said same after we took him off after scoring 2 but we did. Team game. Team has got character, togetherness and I demand that.
Do you think from Wolves game onwards there's a good level of consistency now?
- yes, we're all trying to find that in the championship. Need to keep nudging forward now
What do Derby County bring tomorrow?
- John (Eustace) has had as big a challenge as any of us. Won't be feeling sorry for himself, will galvanise his team, lot happened preseason that went against him. Will be a good away following, had some good games v them over the years.
You mentioned at Southampton hoping for positive news regarding contracts for some of the squad?
- you know what its like with agents. Hope they will re-sign, nothing's changed. Owners and Steve understand how important it is to keep best players, but have to be sensible with contracts/uplifts etc.
A few of the squad approaching certain age/prime part of their careers
- thinks it's changed. There's Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, Lallana, Milner - Jordon Ayew - not written off at 34. Need experienced boys as well.

Jack Robinson signed for Derby, "the ultimate competitor" what's your take on that?
- on and off pitch did well for me, brought him is a competition for JOC. Mixed one with supporters which makes me scratch my head a bit as he always gave everything. Contract terminated when I wasn't here, think you need a Jack Robinson around. Was a key part of my "leadership group" and the players were right behind that.
Is that on par with how a player is viewed by his manager - what his teammates think of him?
- yes, but not a popularity contest - got to be able to play and contribute as well.
Two tough away fixtures but now back to back home fixtures, opportunity to get that first consecutive win at home?
- need a strong home record but it's always about the next game. Belief in the group hope it transfers to the stands but that will only happen if we produce a front footed performance against difficult opposition.
You mentioned about some good games v Derby, 2018 Boxing Day 3-1 win the Lane was rocking. How intimidating can Bramall Lane be?
- that's exactly what I want. Both teams were pushing. A great afternoon, egdy, ebbed and flowed. Proximity plays a part, both working class clubs.
Last time the sides met was last game and we ruined their playoff push, does that affect mindsets?
- not really, new season, new group of players. Derby had showed what can be done with a group of committed players. Good to finish that way in front of a full away end.
