23/10/26 Press Conference Summary - Derby home

out all day on a session yesterday so wasn't up to doing this this morning. Heavily paraphrased summary.

Doesn't look like many of Uganda Blade 's list got addressed apart from Donovan.

Andy Giddings

Femi Seriki fitness update, how is he regards tomorrow?

- available

How pleasing is it to have him back?

- yes, have missed the likes of Harrison,Femi, Ryan and Chong. Think you've seen the impact of their (3 out of the 4) return recently. Do they go straight back in? - don't have the option of reserve games now so more complicated. Ryan good when he came on v Lincoln and on saturday, and Harrison was outstanding. Getting Femi back gives us a really good option in that position.

And also options to change formation during games?

- yes, not stuck on one formation. Also saw that saturday with Romelle and Ryan coming on and getting us up pitch.

Where is One with getting back to 100% fit.

-has to build up those minutes. 15/16 man game these days, need to utilise subs. Ryan's going to play a part, young lad, had a good preseason, delighted he's back.

How do you assess Donovan's progression and usefulness at the moment?

- young player playing at championship level - no guarantees when talk to Brentford, I'd never give guarantees to clubs where we send players on loan to either, it's a squad game, has to be comp for places. Delighted with Rom's attitude and can play right or left, can start or come on - he understands 3 points is most important thing.

OK what does he need to do then to get more minutes?

- I don't understand what (the question is)

Well, if he is to become a regular starter

- Chong played on Satdi because he played well on wednesday night. Get an opportunity, play well and you put yourself in the manager's thoughts. Have to change things to suit. Pat could have said same after we took him off after scoring 2 but we did. Team game. Team has got character, togetherness and I demand that.

Do you think from Wolves game onwards there's a good level of consistency now?

- yes, we're all trying to find that in the championship. Need to keep nudging forward now

What do Derby County bring tomorrow?

- John (Eustace) has had as big a challenge as any of us. Won't be feeling sorry for himself, will galvanise his team, lot happened preseason that went against him. Will be a good away following, had some good games v them over the years.

You mentioned at Southampton hoping for positive news regarding contracts for some of the squad?

- you know what its like with agents. Hope they will re-sign, nothing's changed. Owners and Steve understand how important it is to keep best players, but have to be sensible with contracts/uplifts etc.

A few of the squad approaching certain age/prime part of their careers

- thinks it's changed. There's Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, Lallana, Milner - Jordon Ayew - not written off at 34. Need experienced boys as well.

Interviewer 2 (?)

Jack Robinson signed for Derby, "the ultimate competitor" what's your take on that?

- on and off pitch did well for me, brought him is a competition for JOC. Mixed one with supporters which makes me scratch my head a bit as he always gave everything. Contract terminated when I wasn't here, think you need a Jack Robinson around. Was a key part of my "leadership group" and the players were right behind that.

Is that on par with how a player is viewed by his manager - what his teammates think of him?

- yes, but not a popularity contest - got to be able to play and contribute as well.

Two tough away fixtures but now back to back home fixtures, opportunity to get that first consecutive win at home?

- need a strong home record but it's always about the next game. Belief in the group hope it transfers to the stands but that will only happen if we produce a front footed performance against difficult opposition.

You mentioned about some good games v Derby, 2018 Boxing Day 3-1 win the Lane was rocking. How intimidating can Bramall Lane be?

- that's exactly what I want. Both teams were pushing. A great afternoon, egdy, ebbed and flowed. Proximity plays a part, both working class clubs.

Last time the sides met was last game and we ruined their playoff push, does that affect mindsets?

- not really, new season, new group of players. Derby had showed what can be done with a group of committed players. Good to finish that way in front of a full away end.

Many thanks. Have a medal for doing that on a hangover! 🎖️
At least from the questions we compiled it looks like they pushed him a bit on Donovan, which was the most popular question.

yeh that one definitely got put in, and he pressed him on it as well after the first answer (which I though was a bit odd) didn't seem to address it.

Listening to his interview theres no doubt at all if selles didn't come in robinson would still be here with an extended contract.

I think if there wasnt such a push back and noise with the fans he would have resigned him this season when Birmingham released him.

Not sure why he said hes left scratching his head at the fans view on him... yes he gave his all and 100% commitment never shirked but thats the bare minimum. He just wasnt that great a footballer and always had a brain fart that ended up costing us games. And here is the issue with the current set up and crop of players hes again not seeing the issue of it not being good enough.

Bit of a shit answer though. Should have pushed him more in saying he had the shirt he was doing well so why suddenly drop him with no real chance of winning it back, its more than rotation at this point now.

2 Games stand out for me regards Robinson. The 5-2 demolition of Burnley at the Lane mistakes and part of the 2nd half demolition and a goal. Really chuffed for him that day. 2nd game League cup last season away at Brum complete idiot how he was never sent off for the lino expletives. He divided opion alright. Strange player limited in ability big heart but to be fair if JOC wasnt injured JLT would have limited game time. But culture carrier one of Wilders loves.

He is one of those blokes who in any game could drop an absolute howler or deliver a fantastic crunching tackle. Or both. In fairness I thought he was probably the only player who came out of the 23/24 season clusterfuck with any credit.

i dont get his view. i dont care if someone is the greatest motivational speaker in the world if he's a liability on the pitch

Whilst i do agree respectfully its a real sign of how far we had regressed as a football cub when JLT is our stand out defender / player.

Thank you Ruben Selles
Echoing SB_90 ‘s thoughts above, there is no place for such a limited footballer as Robinson in any serious Championship squad. It’s also no coincidence that while he was club captain we had seven serious player behavioural charges totalling around a million in fines yet since he’s gone we’ve not had any.

The head scratcher is what people see in him.

Most reasonable people see nothing in JLT other than a walking card

What's head scratching is Wilder sees that quality and limited ability as a positive

Martin Luther King was a joy to watch though for us as a trequartista in the 66/67 season

I agree, and thought he seemed a bit touchy on that one.
Hea touchy on it because he knows a lot of the fans think he should be in the first 11 and he isnt at all good at taking any kind of critisism. Every single interview he does he has to mention something along the lines of 'I know what the narrative is'....'I can hear the noise' etc etc.

Hes way too bothered about what 'we' think, you dont get it from other managers and its definitely a character defect .

Regarding JLT didn't wilder insist on playing him above better options to ensure he triggered his contract extension? As others have said JLT lost the plot and seemed to want to fight anyone & everyone, cent imagine that being a positive culture carrier in the dressing room. Best result from selles was getting him out asap.

Looking back Donovan's not had much of a look in since the Blackburn home game where he made a couple of mistakes , got booked and then got taken off in the second half. Apart from playing the full game at Fleetwood it's been all last 10 minutes of games since.

The air brushing of history in replacing Anel with JLT is typical of the managers mind set in continually trying to justify the selection of JLT even now.

No CW the best centre back partnership with Harry Souttar was Anel not JLT. We had the best defence for 12 games when they played together. Souttar was brought into the side after JLT's poor start to the season gifting two goals to QPR at Home and injuring himself in the process.

When Anel was fit after injury CW opted to continue with JLT against Burnley at Home where he promptly failed to cut out a cross that led to the first for the Clarets. Souttar got injured that game and didnt play again. A few days later JLT was at fault for Sunderlands first goal in a 2-1 away defeat.

Add in gaffs against Bristol City at Home and Plymouth away that season it can be argued he cost the team in the region of 12 points and automatic promotion.

No amount of air brushing will get away from the fact he was a liability. As others have said we didnt have a lot to thank Selles for but his decision to dispense with JLT's services will be remebered as his one defining moment as SUFC's manager.

I assume we'll be seeing Donovan tear it up for another team soon.
He said that bit about "no guarantees" given to Brentford, so I'd hope they won't have a clause in to recall him in January on that basis. But that said what difference is it if we're not using him anyway?
