With reports that Connor Coady is rumoured to be on 100k a week isn’t it time to accept where we are in the pecking order of the Prem and look to sign players that will improve squad IF we go down without breaking the bank ? Not only that but players that won’t necessarily want to jump ship if it happens.
Obviously we’ve had financial issues this season but the fact that we own all our property assets and now with the Prem cash for the next few years at least, we are in a much better financial situation that a hell of a lot of other clubs.
For me, steady re-building of the squad and infrastructure is key for our long term future and should keep us competitive at the bottom end of the Prem/ Top of the Championship.

I’d rip your hand off for 20th now.

It’s a fine line of chucking munneh about on players that may or may not work and building slowly

We all need to accept that can slowly improve the squad, developing players like Berge or Ndiaye and then selling them for profits

Look at sides like Leicester (previously) they built, but when they tried to keep the side together for too long, they stagnated. Only to be overtaken by Brighton and perhaps Brentford, Fulham then sack the manager

Leeds, Forest and Everton show how chucking money around works for so long…

I’m happy for us to bring through slow burners, the mistake with Brewster was that we wanted him to be a ready made 20 goal a season striker, he wasn’t that. He may well develop if we can get and keep him Fit. By that time Ndiaye might be going for big money.

We need to look around the squads of the big clubs and bring in their youngsters either on loan or to develop

Keep the wages down and we can yo-yo without breaking the club

Cor, if I could make 100k a week I would be a very rich man.

The strategy under Wilder was the right one. Right strategy, wrong execution. The rationale behind it was sound. That being a number of saleable assets on low wages if we go down.

We get Toney instead of Brewster -and similar deals - and nobody would be arguing otherwise. Coady has little to no resale value and represents a sizeable outlay. If it's 10 million all in I'd rather a 22 year old on 2 million a year and an 8 million fee.

I still think we need at least 9 signings and as many as 5 to go straight into the XI to have a good chance of staying up.
Probably a hurdle too far on our budget.

However, if we can build a strongish midfield and tie key players down on new deals then we'll be in a decent place to yo-yo even without Berge and Ndiaye (who we would have to replace with a McAtee type loan).

You buy players you can develop
You loan players for the first team
You target players who are value for money
You plan for this season with an eye on Championship football next season.

Agree on the strategy.
Also key to Wilder's era was tieing eveyone down to new deals to protect assets and improve squad morale (see above).

Not entirely in agreement on Coady though. If we can sign some good PL experienced players we should. We signed too many youngsters in the PL and in year 2 they looked naive and lost. We lacked leaders.

Let's be honest, this is a crucial stage for the club, and we need to be very careful how we go about our business.
If we fuck it up, go back down, and haven't thought about the next 2 seasons, then we could end up mid-table championship before we know it.
With Ndiaye and Berges contracts ending, we need to be thinking very carefully about any bids that come in!
I know we want to keep them, but being realistic, £50m to replace and hopefully brace up the squad, instead of losing them for FA, has to be the business we should be looking at.

I've said a few times I'd be all for selling Berge. He isn't going to sign a new deal and he isn't a good enough player that we couldn't come close to replacing him with the fee we'd get.

Ndiaye is obviously different. The lad is absolutely class and gives us half a chance in every game.

Please do not give our retail superstore ideas.

“OUT NOW GET THE BLADES YO YO, ON SALE AT JUST £59.99”

I listed it elsewhere but from memory.

Positions for first XI: GK, LCB, LWB, CM, LCM, CF.
Positions for cover: CB, LCM, AM, CF.

We've an ageing squad of players close to the end of their contracts.
I think it's a bigger rebuild than many others acknowledge.

Buying players to develop is easier said than done though

For me personally, if you accept you have very little to spend and it’s about finding players for next season then bring in 1 or two and mix with loans and also give kids more time

I totally agree.

Piroe at Swansea would be a great replacement for Ndiaye especially if we could sign another goalscorer to play alongside him.

Not disagreeing with you on the numbers that are needed. Although could the "Positions for cover" come from the academy? For first X1 if defence in front is good enough, I think we will be fine with Wes, realistically he got us up. It's about the number of shots on target you allow to happen, sometimes Henderson looks quality but when you put him in front of a shaky defence and he has 10 shots on target against him he looks "weak" because he concedes 3 but realistically it's the quality of the shots

Academy options in likely order, how old they'll be at the start of the season and the highest level they've played at:
CB: Finlay Potter (19, National League), Miguel Freckleton (20, National League), Connor Barratt (19, PDL U21s)
LCM: Ismaila Coulibaly (22, United first team), Oli Arblaster (United first team), Andre Brooks (20, United first team), Frankie Maguire (20, National League North), Sydie Peck (18, National League)
AM/SS: Louie Marsh* (19, PDL U21s)
CF: Will Osula (20, United first team), Marsh, Antwoine Hackford (19, United first team), Kurtis Havenhand (17, PDL U21s)

None of them are ready unless it's an absolute emergency (or, as in the case of Hackford, if the manager wants to make a point). They'd almost all be better served spending the first half of the season on loan in the EFL.

*Marsh is more of a #10 than an attacking midfielder

The cover at CB all though plentiful I didn't realise how light we were in terms of experience to be honest

Given how many of our lads are made of biscuits (see our injury record over the last couple of seasons), I'd suggest not.
We'll need backup that is at least competitive.
