Hope not.

Preseason should be about getting the team prepared for the season not to get a few quid playing friendlies thousands of miles away.

Yeah cos all the best clubs in the world struggle with it don't they. City look really underprepared after there usa tour. Why on earth would we not be prepared if we had a tour of the usa?

Long plane journeys are literally good for nothing.
Barcelona, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool seem to be ok with it. Fulham, Bournemouth and many other smaller clubs too. The good old days of playing stocksbridge, baslow, grindleford and Worksop are fading away.
As much as we like the old days, these days it’s about “getting out there” “building a portfolio” and all the other shite “business” jargon that should be saved for boardrooms of Coca Cola and Sony.
To do all this and get paid though you’ve got to be in the PL and hold your own in it for a few years too so don’t hold your breath.

Players often complain about the travel times and the schedules on the US/Oz/Asia tours you are referring to.

Those are money grabs not footballing reasons. Wrexham also went out and their star striker broke a few ribs and couldn't fly home for a while before it!
It’s the modern way of doing things, unless you’d rather yo-yo between the championship and PL? Footballs about playing to your highest potential and striving to be the best and that helps by having money, I personally don’t like it either but you’ve got to swallow the truth sometimes and admit it’s just the way things are going.
We could have a player break his ribs in Portugal or Spain the only difference between a tour in the USA and Spain/portugal is an extra 5/6/7 hours.

Who gives a f*** about the players anymore? It’s hardly hampered Man City the last few seasons. Didn’t we go to the USA in the 70’s Australia in the 90’s, we went to china with Warnock and they complained about it but didn’t we get promoted that season?

Depending on what the injury is, the player may have ended up in the USA anyway.

It's physically one of the worst things to do, to get on planes and go long haul. The recovery time can be days after flying, so it's certainly not ideal

City also have players that are better than ours tecnically, often with physiology and a full squad of them. We've got a smaller squad which doesn't get the same rest andf recovery as we have fewer players playing more games.

The media circus limked with these tours is also ridiculous, so yes, a low key preseason in Europe is certainly better than the travel and disruption of going further afield to pimp players and teams out to sponsors and TV audiences.

I wouldn't be against a one off game on the East coast. Exporting the brand is part of what these tours are and if it helps the club to grow, it seems a small price to pay.

I don't think a whole pre season tour over there works because you are in my mind saying that is more important that the local supporters and I think we have a bigger link with this than some of the other clubs mentioned. Its a fine line to tread.

Players are complaining to FIFA about the number of games and minutes that young players are playing, Bellingham was a great example.
Clubs have kicked back at FIFA for the club world cup being such a crazy idea
FIFA kicked back and said that the clubs don't complain when they travel around the world on these global tours generating cash...

Turns out that clubs prefer to be in control of their own income and they earn more from these world tours than the will do going to a club world cup.

In the 60s, when we an established top division side, we did the following tours:
1962 USA and Canada
1965 New Zealand
1966 Latin America
1967 Latin America again.

The 65 tour was done in conjunction with Blackpool against whom we played 12ish times in various NZ cities. United had most wins so took the coveted BOAC Cup.

The Latin American tours saw us play in Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Paraguay and Bolivia. We beat AC Milan 4-0 in a tournament in Mexico..

In.the 70s we went to Zambia in 72 (winning the also coveted Zambia Airways Trophy) and in 75 Kuwait, NZ again and New Caledonia, which must be the most obscure place we've ever played..

I might be making things up here but I’m sure I read somewhere that by the 8th/9th game against Blackpool both sides were bored of each other and decided to mix the sides up so it’d be a Blackpool/Blades XI v Blackpool/Blades XI !!

Crikey. And look at how it made us a globally supported powerhouse! 😄😉

Not true I'm afraid ;-)

I think I speak for everyone in the fanbase when I say next summer the Blades should do a pre-season tour of Sussex. It'd be nice if the club were to liaise with me whilst arranging all dates and kick off times.
Feel free to DM me @sheffieldunited

I’ve certainly read something that was a bit quirky about that trip, apart from the fact we played Blackpool numerous times. I can’t remember which book it was in though, I’m presuming something that John Garrett had a hand in.

Did you compile a "definitive" list of games for that lot? I'd be interested in that. (Not necessarily on here...)

We were due to go to USA at the end of the first season of the Prem under wilder, but obviously covid put paid to that. Los Angeles was one of the venues we were due at, i forget the rest. For some of us that would have been a wonderful trip away. Never mind
