Why do you think those "major" regional beers died out? My simple mind always goes to - commercial interests, not enough people buying them. There just seemed to be takeover, after takeover, with brands being consolidated into ever larger single large scale industrial sites.
Landlords not keeping their beer properly? Lager was already quite popular when I started drinking but plenty of older people who drank it told me that they liked the reliability and consistency as much as anything. With the big breweries, the beer was quite variable in quality; some beers tended not to travel well and some pubs just didn’t look after it properly or clean their pipes regularly enough. I think that helped to shift people towards lager and bottled beer. In the mid eighties it was all about Holsten Pils and Grolsch and bitter was seen as an old man’s drink. Real ale tended to be the preserve of bearded men who liked folk music and Morris dancing.

So, my guess would be partly due to the variance in quality and partly due to fashion and image.

I think it’s better these days, most pubs have at least one beer on tap that you’ll like, whatever your particular taste and preference is.

Surely there is no difference in how you keep Keg Bitter & Keg Lager is there? Real Ale can "spoil" because it comes into contact with oxygen. But Wards Stones & Tetley's & Worthington & Smith's as sealed Keg beers - there's no skill in keeping them different to keeping the lager in the Keg alongside. Am I missing something, I don't get that argument.

Oh you little tinker Phil!

You know well that all of the above were available as cask real ales or as bright filtered beers for working men's clubs etc.

The best Wards always smelled a little bit of sulphur as you lifted the pint to your cake hole and was a wonderful drink when kept well.

In the period BushBlade was talking about, there was no keg smooth/cream flow bollocks. IIRC the first beers sold like this were Boddingtons and Guinness.

No. Genuinely believed we were talking about Keg beers, not cask ales. Can't remember seeing a cask ale in Sheffield until about 1977. I was working behind the Jump in the Big Tree in 1977 and nothing there was cask....
No drama. Cross purposes I think

If you’re in Biddenden then a trip to Biddenden vine and cider yard is a good afternoon out. The 13% reserve cider is ace, only bettered by Kenny Cramp’s Double Vision cider from up the road. It does what it says on the tin! Let me know nearer the time and I will let you know what’s hot! A must do is the Thanet micropub crawl. Some corkers!

It’s not an argument, it’s a suggestion. I just know there used to be a lot of “shit pints” around.

Going to be controversial and say Wards was just smelly fart beer. Tinge of the smell of sulphur, read stank of smelly farts. Looked like it had been made with part washing up liquid with all that froth and foam and when it came out the other end, it would clear a room.

Back in the late 80's early 90's my favourite was Tetleys cask at The Abbey on the end of Abbey Lane.

You can still get a proper pint of Tetleys cask at my local, The Mount Pleasant Inn on Derbyshire Lane. Very nice it is too, although I prefer the Moonshine on draught and they recently had Titanic Plum Porter on draught..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Will do, sounds like I’ll have to butter up Mrs SW12 before hand to act as Chauffeur though.

I do like Thornbridge Lord Marples to be fair ,just dont like beer out of cans or bottles. The real enemy are Lager drinkers.
No Sitwell, the real enemy are teetotallers. I used to agree with you when "lager" was Skol, Whitbread Gold Label (the piss, not the barley wine!), and Carling.
It really has moved on a bit. Had a pint of altbier on Saturday- malty, good head, darker than Guinness, AND a lager!

It's not proper Tetley's, it's brewed in Northampton. Stick with the Moonshine, and especially the Titanic plum porter - proof that occasionally summat good comes out of Stoke.
Totally agree about Wards. I've always thought it smelled of vomit rather than farts - even worse! I'm a complete convert to modern hipster keg beer, but if it's sort-of beer-ish, chances are I'll sup it!

Tastes alreet to me, but then I don't claim to be a connoisseur. Same as most folk, I just like what I like.

Speaking of which, met a mate in The Fat Cat yesterday evening and sampled the Blue Monkey Rhubarb and Custard IPA - I quite liked it, it was certainly smooth and not surprisingly quite sweet, however I wouldn't want to drink a lot of it.

Had a few of one called IPA Of The Dead 5.9%, which was a nice drink.

I used to love the Wards at the pub opposite the brewery on Eccy. I’m ashamed to say I’ve forgotten the name, but it was bulldozed long ago. I wonder if it didn’t travel well.

Very disappointing that Vaux took it over and then closed the brewery. I hate it when a big company takes over a smaller one and then kills it off.

Never had draught altbier that tastes good outside of Düsseldorf

The Devonshire.

Vaux had owned Wards since the 70s. It was the shareholders of Vaux who saw the big breweries selling off pubs in the 90s, following the Major government's beer laws limiting the big boys to 2,000 pubs.

Vaux suddenly came over all 'maximise shareholder value' and flogged off all their pubs and breweries. IIRC, some of the family were dead against this but as it was a PLC, they were outvoted.

A sad day indeed when the brewery closed and some lovely boozers got sold to Punch/Enterprise et al and never got a penny more spent on them.

Some have survived okay (Hallamshire under Thornbrdge, Grindstone under Stancil, Cricket Inn Smiths/Thornbridge etc etc) but plenty have gone.

Off the top of my head the Wards RIP list is:
Earl of Arundel
Scarborough Arms
Red House
Royal Oak
Meadow Street
Harlequin (the old one)
Matilda
Nags Head
Domino
Bathfield....

The Earl was a wonderful pub.

Alcohol free anything is like fucking without coming.

Have to agree, I just don't get it.

Although I've not had alcohol for a couple of years, I love ale, and used to love working my way down the bar trying everything in the Tap and in various Kelham Island pubs; that's to say, I can appreciate the flavours, but if a side effect isn't getting pissed, give me a glass of Ribena.

Hope you're ok Bromtom and that being alcohol free is working for you, for whatever reason. I agree, the side effect is the thing, even if it's just the mild relaxation of a couple of beers, rather than full on pissedness. However, there are good alcofree beers now, it's not all like Kaliber or other 90's shite. Problem is it costs as much as the real stuff, which is a total rip off.

Just an accident really, not drinking. Realised it'd been a while since I'd had a drink and just kept it going to see if I'd miss it, I didn't have a problem or anything like that but thanks for enquiring, and I'm still a fat bastard so no real health benefits so far haha

Good lad, glad you're ok, I don't have the willpower! 🤣

Whatever happened to Barbican, advertised by Lawry McMennemy?

All this outside service as really pointed out to me the discrimination of a beer drinker.
"What would you like"
Mrs:"What wine do you have"?.
"Pinot:Chardonnay:Merlot:A nice Zinfandel."
Me,"What Ales do you have ?"
"ALES don't know I'll go and ask"
🤣Everytime.

Yep, it’s better now you can go inside and look. Our local had the pump clips turned round in lockdown so you couldn’t even peep through the window. Poor young waiter last week didn’t really know what “beer” was!

No. There was nothing like a good pint of Wards. Yes it was a bit frothy. Waggledance was brewed by Wards and that on fraught was good too
