Possible XI for Bolton?

Ok so I'm jumping the gun but if this week's rumoured signings and sales come off we could be looking at the following XI for Bolton:

Long
Brayford McFadzean O'Connel Hussey
Done Basham Fleck Duffy
Sharp Clarke

Given that Done did nothing on the left for us and Duffy played succesfully on the left for Clough I think this might be best for us. Still if Done doesn't hit the ground running we will need another winger. Basham played best at right wing back last season, if Brayford goes I'd try him at right back but that means we need to sign another CM.

When you look at it on paper like that you have to admit that it is starting to look like a very capable team.

Sharp and Clarke would single handed rip the league to pieces and you wouldn't see many getting past that back four either.

But that is obviously if we get the signings. Think that team looks more than capable and could be a very good side. Fingers crossed we get the signings we want which I think we will I have a lot of confidence in wilder and think he will make things happen. Think done will be used as a impact sub same as Clarke if we did get him. But only time will tell looking forward to the first game now though.

It's a left winger and a striker we need to sign next to complete an initial starting 11, left winger especially. But I've not seen many names mentioned for that position.

I would hope he picks a system that fits the players at his disposal. I'm presuming that was the right one for the payers he had at Northampton. Anything with 1 upfront requires the 1 to be a target man or extremely pacey I would have thought?

Is what I'd go with. Almost certainly expect Adams and DCL to go as if we sign a target man we'd still have 4 strikers (if you include Done as back up), and I'd be fine with that if the funds are used for the 3/4 decent incomings. Would prefer if we could keep Adams mind since there's not a great deal of pace up top without him.

I agree with your selection but I expect Duffy centre attacking mid and Adams right attacking mid.

I think Wilder intends to have 'the best player in the league' pulling the strings from the middle of the park

Welcome to the forum Blademan89! For me Scougall has proved himself mediocre barring a flash in the pan period when he first signed. Jury is still out on Whiteman for me but I certainly prefer him to Louis Reed who I'm certain will play non-league within a few years.

Thank you, well the only reason as to why I suggested scougall is because of his energy and quick pressing and closing down, just as CW wants from his players and couldn't think of a current member of our squad that would fit the bill. I am hoping for a new signing in there instead of scougall - with similar tenacity and able to turn and run with the ball, (I think that he may improve his form under CW,like we know he can do)

Adams is never LW , I've watched him carefully when he's been given this role and he always drifts inside too much , because of course he is a striker. He will never be disciplined enough to stay wide and get chalk on the boots , so we DEFINITIVELY need a specialists LW , because Done also wants to play striker. My guess is CW will recruit a LW and have Done as cover for either LW or striker.
He will also recruit a target man and have Billy play off him.
So what do we do with Adams , McNuts & DCL ?
Warnock used to like 7 strikers in a promotion squad , we only have 6 so that's not excessive.
If Adams , McNuts or DCL consider themselves better than reserve strikers , then CW will let them go if the fee is right and the wisdom of their decision to depart will depend on their destination club and what role they want.
If they want to be first choice starters , they'll stay in L1 , if they want the Prem or the Champ they are gonna be second string. It's their call.
If I were them with time on my side , I would stay here at a big Club that has a bigger chance for promotion than in recent seasons due to better manager and better recruitment.
Billy is getting on and they could be his eventual replacement if they develop properly.
Once CW has found his LW , his CM (Fleck) and his 2 CBs (McFadzean & O'Donnell) he is virtually there and we could start the season without further recruitment.
But personally I don't believe either Long or Basham will satisfy him as first choices and he will be hunting for a goalie & a further CM in August , but of course I hope I am wrong and those 2 really step up to the plate. If they don't, they can stay as cover.

Adams is neither a striker or a winger in the traditional sense. He's a modern forward who goes where the space is. Or, as they say, he goes out to come in. There aren't many 'wingers' who get chalk on their boots anymore.

In my side, I wasn't really using him as LW I wanted him to come inside and link you with sharp, it allowes hussy to get down that left side and really push back their defence and pressure them.

Listening to Knill on that Alan Biggs programme, I reckon Done will be a starter. It sounds like they want our forward players to chase and press in the opposition half, and that's one of Done's strengths.

Well I went to nearly all the games last season, so I know exactly what he is capable of doing and not doing, but from the current squad who on earth would you put in place ?

Think we need a winger , striker , right side centre half. Keep Che for just one more season and then that's as good as a team as we could assemble.

If could get Clarke think would be outstanding. If DCL goes we should use some money for him and Mcfazdean then shouldn't be a need to sell Che.

Think we have a new signing in centre midfield if James Wallace stays fit. Which will push basham on.

I'm hoping tufty' style of management will bring the best out of him. He certainly won't be wasting him at lwb which made him look a worst player than he actually is.

Clean slate and fresh start for them this season, including the likes of scoogs and mcnulty. We have to trust CW and back them all.

I suspect he'd listen to offers for Done, Scougall and McNulty but doesn't intend to let them go cheap, hence not listing them.

But it's difficult to tell as we don't know what his preferred formation is. It could be 442, in which case I imagine he'll want at least one big striker, probably two if he's going to play most games like that. On the other hand, he may play one up front and I can't see McNulty being good at that role but I think Billy and Done have both played as a lone striker before so he might want to keep both.

I'm happy to let him get on with it. He seems to be grasping the nettle and doing what is needed.

Good point about knill, the fact he has managed before makes him an ideal right hand man to have.
