Possible Summer Targets

Millwall have activated an option to extend Lee Gregory's contract according to Sky Sports. Doesn't say how long the new contract is.

They may have just activated it so that they receive a fee now should he wish to leave. I still see us trying hard to sign him this summer.

Webster would be both a surprising and unsurprising target.

He's been injured all season.

But could be a good one to pick up cheaply.

Not in my opinion, we've got an aging strike force as it is. I know it doesn't matter how old they are if they can put them in the onion bag but I'd like to see a younger, quicker striker bought

With Hanson, Lavery and Donaldson all expected to leave in some form over summer, and Sharp and Clarke unlikely to improve, I'd expect more than one striker to be recruited.

I've felt for quite some time that Gregory would be a good addition and I'm pleased he's apparently being targetted - he ticks a lot of the boxes that CW looks for in signings.

Webster is a slightly higher risk but only because of his injury this season. However, if CW and the medical team are confident he can overcome it (Coutts suffered arguably a more serious knee injury whilst at Derby and obviously overcame that (eventually)) then it may actually be advantageous to Utd by reducing potential interest in him and also his market value.

Such as whom MB?
Don't really know because as we know clubs won't release their best players. After watching Gregory on a few occasions I don't think he is good enough. There may well be better players even in the lower divisions or on the fringe of top end champ and premiership sides. I would hope the 'new budget' would cater for this.

imo we need a tall prolific striker and someone like Aiden Flint at the back. Either use Baldock and LWB or buy/loan a decent one. Try to get Blackman back between the sticks or get someone similar.

I would like to think that the budget is a significant increase on last years budget and that's why CW appears to be satisfied - but will we have the cash to prise GOOD players away from our rivals? Only time will tell.

Not wanting to just criticise your suggestions but BCFC turned down a £6m bid for Flint in Jan and Blackman is on >£20k/week. I'd say that would put them well out of Utd's price bracket, unless Blackman would be available for loan again

Don't hold your breath for significantly increased budget, especially whilst the ownership wranglings remain ongoing. It mustn't be forgotten that the club runs at a significant operating loss and short of selling assets (players rather than infrastructure), that is most likely to remain.

While everyone has their opinion, I do think we ought to be aiming a lot higher if we are to succeed this time around.
Yeah I feel the same way, if you want a real shot at promotion you can't just rely on free transfers and some loan players, even tho you should be able to pick up at least 2 quality playerse from FT and loans. But if the resources are not there, not much we can do.

You make valid points but the next step up for us is to be able to compete and buy those players. The current top 6 are already in that bracket.

Jags
Aidan flint
O'Connel

I would like to see in there as our back 3. Highly unlikely I know but that is a proper promotion budget and ambition.

1 or 2 better strikers with Fleck, Coutts +1 behind them. Chuck in a new LWB and Blackman then we give ourselves a great chance of top 6 or better.

To add, if we couldn't find a LWB I'd love to see Baldock and Freeman both on the pitch at the same time rotating RWB and LWB positions. Keep switching would be easy as they are similar players. Pre season would be ideal to test that :)

Appreciate some of the names mentioned are valid for the Championship but to kick on we have to go bigger. The flying CB tactic is what shook up the division last season with Coutts pendulum act keeping the timing right - that is the formation id like to see us go for, rather than go after the usual raft of random mercenaries - lets fit the recruitment to the tactic.

We shouldn’t bring any player in this summer who isn’t better than our starting 11. That’s what we did last summer and in January. Maybe stearman but we need to do better this summer
Tbf last year we did need to strengthen the squad, not just the first team. We still got caught a few times last season , short a player or two before January.

But yes, this summer we really should stick to the "quality over quantity"

Agree with the above points. But realistically it’s difficult.

We need a GK, LWB, CB 2 Strikers.

But based on goals alone we will struggle to replace Sharp and Clarke with better stats. We need more help as an overall someone to link play or someone to stretch the side.

Watching the Bundesliga play off between Holstein KIel and Wolfsburg.

The commentator Tim Caple (who's really knowledgeable) suggested Marvin Duksch is valued at about £1.7m to £2m and that at that price he's easily worth a punt. Also named Dominick Drexler and Kingsley Schindler as Holstein Kiel players worth a look. Drexler looks like a tricky player from the little I've seen. Schindler's a versatile, goalscoring right sided player.

Leeds were apparently desperate to sign Duksch in January. That said, they've signed their share of foreign duds recently.

If we can't/ don't want to re-sign Blackman, I think we should go for Angus Gunn on loan.

Part of me wants to suggest Adam Armstrong, who will apparently be leaving Newcastle this summer. Always had potential, but never seemed to live up to it. Still only 21 though.

Great shout. Some have said in the ast that he hasn't cut it at championship level but I'd argue that he hasn't been in a team that creates chances and actually plays on the front foot like we do. When Bolton and Barnsley had him they just punted it in the hopes that he could break away with pace and get goals against the run of play. The 20 goals he got at Coventry in his first season seems to me that there's more than enough about him and that he has the potential to be big.

A newly promoted Blackburn seem to fancy their chances at getting him so he surely can't be out of our reach financially?

Valued at £1.5m on TransferMarkt... although for the most part their valuations are bolocks.

If we're going off of Transfermarkt valuations then he's 3.703 times better than Paul Coutts.

Sign the lad up Wilder!

I see QPR may have to offload a couple of players because of the FFP ruling. Could you see us being interested in anyone there?

Not a prolific goalscorer but I see Conor Washington being one who Wilder may like. Luke Freeman would be nice but even still, he'd be costly.
