Possible Summer Targets

Jordan Rhodes would have scored 75% of the chances our players have missed this season. He can be the clinical striker we crave to kill games. Money the issue.

I'd also look at Matt Smith, Ashley Fletcher and Tom Bradshaw.

Bradshaw and Moore looked useful for Barnsley

To save Wilder a bit of time I'll even sort the departures and do his whole squad for him.

1. Jamal Blackman - - - - - - - - - 13. Simon Moore

Positional coverage:

RW / LW: Marshall, Brooks, Ameobi
CF: McBurnie, Clarke, Sharp, Eisa, Brooks, Ameobi

Nice compact squad of quality with no spare parts. Top 6 potential there surely.

I expect and demand the squad looks like this by July 1st.

We shouldn’t sign a single winger unless we’re confident they could play, or have a history of playing wing back. Or in the middle.

We have barely swapped from 5 at the back all year and that’s l my been in the case of desperation when we’re chasing a goal. It’s really pointless and a complete waste of wages as we’ve seen with Nathan Thomas and Harry Chapman.

5 at the back is the way we play, it won’t change.

Yep, absolutely nothing wrong with the system we play, all we can hope is that we get better at it, probably by bringing in better quality exponents. That depends entirely on the budget, which is obviously completely unknown.

Marshall and Ameobi would both be good additions because of their versatility. Marshall can play just about anywhere, including RWB and probably LWB. Ameobi can play on either wing, as a striker or behind a striker. Getting the pair for under £2m in transfer fees would be outstanding business.

Marshall is a tricky one - Wolves will no doubt sell, but at the moment we are probably in the same market financially as Millwall at whom he is having a cracking season.

Oliver Norwood might be one worth asking questions about, spend majority of season on loan at Fulham - will they want him permanently if they go up, unlikely Brighton would stand in his way if he wanted to leave.

As with many suggestions, wages and fee the stumbling blocks.

For me, ideally this summer we'll sign.

Jamal Blackman, either Darragh Lenihan or John Egan, Sammy Ameobi & Lee Gregory. Maybe the likes of Jon Nolan too depending on player departures.

I'll be annoyed if Millwall get him permanently. It will be purely because he went there on loan, and we could have signed him ahead of them in January. I doubt they can afford a £1.5m+ fee though. Maybe it'll put them in a position where selling Gregory to us becomes more likely, to help fund it. But they'd be the winners in that scenario. Wouldn't surprise me if they got good money for Saville though and funded Marshall with that fee instead. Speaking of Saville....

George Saville - If we sell Fleck he'd be a very good replacement. He is a left footed, true all round midfielder. A 6 footer with plenty of bite and quality on the ball. Not as good on the ball as Fleck but his goalscoring ability would make up for it to a large extent. He's a huge reason Millwall are doing as well as they are. Would cost £3.5m minimum now I think.

Yeah no doubt, however I’d play on the fact that his stock has taken a hit this season - will there be a queue for him? At this stage of his career does he want games?

I would think he will sit out the next two years at the pigs, collecting a nice big wage.

Wouldn't go anywhere near Rhodes. Certainly on big wages. Have never rated him and he seems worse than ever.

I'd rather take Lucas Joao from Wednesday and would've said that this time last year too. One year left on his contract but I think they'll want to keep him now.

Winnall and Nuhiu are two others I'd take ahead of Rhodes. If Winnall isn't a complete dickhead as suggested I'd be very interested in him.

Agree on Joao, tall and fast and started scoring

he’d cost more than Rhodes.

With a year left on his contract, I don't think so.

They paid up to £10m (LOL) for Rhodes and won't sell without recouping a good amount of that. It makes far more sense for them to hang on and wait to see if he starts scoring again.

Couple more players who might be worth looking at from League One. Neither of these teams should be likely getting in the play offs so offering championship football should be a good pull for them.

Tom Lockyer - CB, Bristol Rovers. Good runner, strong and a fairly good ball player from the back. At 23 years old he's already been made captain and has well over 200 games under his belt as well as 3 Wales call ups. Just signed a new contract so will likely command a high fee but if we wanted a right footed JOC I'd be inclined to put my money on him.

Dru Yearwood - Cm, Southend. After Leonard left Southend fans wondered who could fill his boots. Up stepped 18 YO Yearwood and all of a sudden he's turned into one of the most exciting prospects in League One and is nominated for Apprentice of the Year. He'll have 3 years left on his contract and we're a bit swamped at CM but if any depart then he could be a cracking signing for the future.

I think Jaoa's stock has risen this year, and given what they spent on him I think they will be extending his contract and be out of our price range.

I think they will look at a player like Rhodes and want him off their wage bill (give the FFP stuff), they'll take a hit on the fee - but even then, will we have £5/6m to spend on a striker, slim chance. Loan (to us) definitely out of the question.

I just think we need to look at spending 95% of our budget on a proven, ruthless goalscorer at this level. Not that many out there who are, or potentially are, within our budget.

Sam Baldock - would he be worth considering?

Just thinking of 4th or 5th choices at Prem teams who might be gettable on loan or reduced fees.

I'd definitely go for Baldock. The connections with George also surely puts us in good stead with getting him

Given the market prices for strikers now, I think we have to be clever. That means loaning one who we couldn't afford to buy, Gallagher and McBurnie being the stand out options - although McBurnie appears to be out of contract at Swansea, in which case it'd go to a tribunal and other Championship clubs would be all over him.

Another way is to consider ones who might not be doing so well but appear to have the ability and potential to do better, especially when placed in our team under our management. Vellios and McGoldrick are examples of players who I think have a good season in them at this level.
Also look at strikers doing well in lower divisions, or dare I say it, abroad.

Jack Marriott, Sean Maguire, Paul Smyth (QPR) and possibly Ollie Watkins are examples of attackers we could've signed this season - and I'm pretty sure we will have considered them all. So it shows it's doable.

For me Mo Eisa should be a no brainer for us. It's been his first season at FL level and he's got 20+ goals. He seems like a finisher and is good enough physically and technically to have a chance at Championship level. It could be 500k to £5m in 6 months, like Marriott.

Some goalkeepers:

Tomáš Holý - Genuine fucking big fucker at Gillingham who Palace have been looking at. 6 foot 9, from Czech Republic.

Dean Henderson
- Has impressed at Shrewsbury on loan from Man Utd. He wants to leave and top clubs are interested. If he goes to one of them we could get him on loan. If first team football is his only motivation then maybe he'd move to the Championship permanently.

Christian Walton
- Has done well on loan at Wigan from Brighton. Tall, agile and a decent shot stopper.

Michael Mancienne at Forest might be a decent option for the back 3, he's been on the bench recently I think. Likes to carry the ball forward.

The key point with Utd's recruitment is, given their budget, they're extremely unlikely to be able to compete with several other Champ clubs and certainly every Prem club in terms of transfer fee and wages so therefore need to be cute in who they target and, more often than not, look for those players whose stock and therefore value is currently low, whether that be due to current form, playing in a lower league, returning from injury, contract status, current club needing to sell etc. in order for them to be both desirable and gettable - highlighting the importance of Paul Mitchell's role. Good recent examples are Fleck (contract), O'Connell (form), Duffy (contract), Clarke (Bury needing to sell), Holmes (Charlton needing to sell), Baldock (playing in lower league) etc.

Even if they fit one or more of the criteria I mentioned, some of the names above (e.g. Marriott, Joao, Rhodes, Baldock) will simply be still too expensive for Utd (to buy at least) especially if the owner are, as expected, still buggering about which is likely to impact the available budget.

I've heard of Maris Crane, but I never saw her.

We kept Marshall pretty quiet yesterday. Millwall's defensive approach helped. He rarely got in positions to hurt us.

Thought we could have really done with Sammy Ameobi. He would've been perfect to bring on against them. Seems to be in good form for Bolton recently. He really is one we have to try and sign on a free.
