Possible January Targets

Danny Ward on loan from Liverpool springs to mind. Won promotion with Huddersfield last season, he was the man who stopped Wednesday winning the penalty shootout.

But generally, who lets their keeper go mid season?

I don't think there are too many viable options out there.

I think I might start thinking of some goalkeepers...

If we're being ruthless, it is an area we could improve in.

I agree but think it very unlikely that another GK would be brought in unless JB or SM suffered a long term injury. As JB is playing regularly, I'd be amazed if Chelsea recall him in Jan.

Letting in several soft goals certainly isn't helping but imho the root cause of the dip in form is a combo of the loss of Coutts and both RWBs being injured at the same time, resulting in Bash having to cover (and actually doing ok) and being moved from RCB where he is more effective.

I can’t see much beyond Wilder testing the status of his original targets all of which would help to fill gaps we still have.

Lenihan - Basham having to cover RWB is more easily absorbed plus perhaps O’Connell-Lenihan-Basham would be best yet? Though I’d have Wright every day of the week.

Leonard - still don’t have a player of his ilk. Sarfend are not in contention so why let him leave for nothing in the summer?

Cole/Sinclair - still would benefit from the injection of pace.

Weren’t we linked with Branaghan from Liverpool? Could he ‘do a job’ in midfield for us?

Vela's an interesting one and I'm also thinking he could be one of the best shouts.

Physically I look at him and think he looks really fit and combative. Enough so to comfortably fit into our intensity.

He's quite a hardworking and technically good player and for me he's proven quite a lot with his recent positional change and goalscoring.

Throughout his career though he's quite equally played RB, DM, CM and CAM. The RCM slot in our team looks perfect for him. It's a combination of all those. It wouldn't stop him getting forward and scoring goals.

He's not as good on the ball as Coutts, not many are, but I think he'd be a good fit for the position and our team.

I think he'd want a move from Bolton, I reckon he's sick of playing in that team. He's contracted until 2019. Not sure what he'd cost but I'd guess £2m to £3m.

My problem with him is that he seems like a bit of a dickhead. There was an episode last season with him getting chucked out of a restaurant which he came out of looking a right cunt.

But he's young. And he does seem to genuinely really care about his football.

Porktalk running a thread saying they are linked with Vela in Jan

Derby and Leeds also interested apparently.

Unfortunately these clubs all have more money than us. But football wise we'd be the best move for him.

And Brighton. Daily Mail says he could be sold due to their financial problems.

He has more potential than Leonard so if we could get him for a decent price I'd probably prefer him.

sorry R, there is no way we will be moving for players of this ilk IMO. Only issue I have with us at the momement is we are still a bargain basement club. Unless investment is forthcoming before JTW we will only go in one direction and it ain't the PL.

100% hope I'm talking bollox (and I usually am) but it's the Kevwibblewobblebladeymcbladefaceway way

Jack Byrne at Oldham (on loan from Wigan) has had a good few write ups. Ball playing midfielder, worth a look?

He's played one game this season according to wiki, is that due to injury?

Wiki's rarely up to date, try soccerbase instead... http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=59605

11 games this season and their form's picked up since he (and Ameobi) came back from injury.

Looks like we'd struggle to get him though with richer clubs interested. And Leonard would be instead of him anyway. Shame because I think he'd suit our team perfectly.

Looks like Louis Moult's going to Preston.

Another interesting, good value signing for them.

Were we ever 'interested' in him ( except on here)?
Seen him a few times (v Hearts !?!?) & appears decent at that level - seems to score screamers / worldies ( not scruffy poachers 6 yard box) & not got lightening pace but at that price (nowt) worth a punt
Apparently (DailyRecord) his wages will increase 10 fold ! So either on SFA @ M/well or PNE have brass to invest on potential ( guess no fee helps)

Can we nick a players whos on loan ? Luke Murphy would fit great into our team.

Joe Riley - Wouldn't be surprised if we went for him again. Good cover on both sides and would've certainly helped us a lot recently when we've had to play Basham at RWB. Apparently he's captaining Man Utd's U23s now.

Why have Wigan loaned him out?

Get some game time. Scored 7 in 20 from centre midfield. Came through the academy at City.

Signed at Wigan then their manager got sacked after 2 weeks and Cook went with Morsy instead and pushed him out on loan.

One to remember, he’ll be playing in the Championship soon.

It's not like Wigan couldn't afford to let a good young midfielder go out on loan.

They have Morsy, Power, Evans and Powell who are all established quality players.

We need to be picking up players of this type. Not made it at a Top PL academy but excelling having dropped a few levels. Either that or PL loans.

I'm increasingly thinking Scott McTominay might be our best option to replace Coutts. The more I see him the more I like him, seems like a classy player and has the physicality to go with it.

He's been in Man Utd's squad every game recently though so they probably won't want to let him go. But if one or two injuries clear up for them we might have a chance, because we'd be a great place for him to go and there's the Nick Cox connection too.

Failing that, we could always have a pop for Mkhitaryan...

Ones we can rule out now...

Ainsley Maitland-Niles
- He's recently been starting for Arsenal - at left back, showing his exceptional versatility.

Massimo Luongo
- We clearly haven't got that sort of money.

Sam Field
- He's recently started a few for WBA and is always in their squad. Shame.

Daniel Johnson
- Starting for PNE and too expensive if he wouldn't start for us.

Lewis Morgan
- Going to Celtic.

Collin Quaner
- Starting for Huddersfield.

Ryan Woods
- Way too expensive. Will be a name that pops up on and off for years. The next Koumas.

Louis Moult - Signed for PNE.

My preferred non Leonard midfielders now would be:

1. Scott McTominay
2. Josh Vela
3. Max Power
4. Chris Forrester
5. Lewis Baker

Jamie Murphy is the one outstanding attacking option as far as I can see.
