Look I understand what you’re saying, but the players are consistently failing to do even the most basic functions on the football field. The manager picks the team and determines the style of play. But he can’t do much about individual errors, poor judgment and lack of composure in front of goal.
Coach them? I watched Arsenal getting hammered by City and some of Keown’s comments could have been applied to us such as “he changed from a back two on Wednesday night to a back three today. He’s hardly had time to work with them, probably one session on Friday morning, it shows, they look like they’ve never played together before, they don’t know what they should be doing”. “He’s overcomplicating things, why not simplify his instructions?”
I’m prepared to give him time and it’s clear he’s trying to fight with one arm tied behind his back, I don’t think any relegated side has come back without a few signings, but at the moment the impression is that he didn’t do his homework on the players. Whilst some players can adapt to new systems, they need to be coached and drilled so they know what they’re doing, some more than others, because they’re playing against players who have been drilled and coached in the system they are playing. And some players just don’t suit certain systems. That’s been the case as long as I remember. Forest under Clough were a good example, very few of their players looked as good when they left, same with us under Bassett. They were chosen to do specific jobs.
When you get relegated, the one objective is to get promoted again. If you want to dramatically change the style of play, you have to spend money. If you haven’t got money to spend, you need a certain type of manager. I’m not sure that’s Slav. Give him a decent amount to spend and support him with good recruitment staff and he’d have a chance.
We were told that we wanted a manager to provide continuity, to provide evolution not revolution. If PA knew that, how have we ended up with a manager who wants to make major changes? It’s not like we did it in a hurry. We had months.
From when things started to go tits up, we’ve had a series of questionable decisions from the people running this club.
Why try to keep Wilder when it’s clear it’s not working? If he’d offered to resign, why not accept it and get a manager in before we were completely fucked?
If they were set in keeping him, why refuse to give him funds in the JTW? How did they think that was going to pan out?
They appoint Heck as a temp to give them time to identify a new manager, spend time chasing a bloke who’s not eligible for a work permit, then appoint a manager who doesn’t appear to fit the criteria they set themselves.
Why not bring in a DoF when it was the perfect opportunity to do so? Someone who can assess what type of manager we needed and had the knowledge and contacts to find one?
It’s becoming like the football equivalent of Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares.
