Not sure how this is any different to the myriad of in/out polls over the past couple of weeks?

No. He failed in his league objectives this season but I believe we were in a good position for next season if the centre back situation was sorted out. Also, I know the cups are a side issue but if he can get us into 2 semi finals when in the 3rd tier of English football he can't be all bad. Time will tell if this was a mistake or not. I would rather him than Davies that's for certain.
I hope it is either McDermott or Warburton personally and we give him more than 18 months to do the job!

Edit: No way in hell would we get Warburton with Weir as his assistant. McDermott or Adkins please

Stability is only good if there is progress associated to it.

Clough argued that finishing 5th over 7th the season before is progress. If that is the sort of progress we'd have to expect, with all the transfer fee's/budgets/resources given to him, then it is right to get rid of him.

I don't like swapping managers all the time but Cloughs baffling decisions and ending the season with what 4 wins in 17? is just piss poor. He had the backing to get who he wanted but let Bristol, MK and Preston cruise ahead.

The board had to sack Clough for his sheer incompetence at planning and building a team. From the moment McGuire left, he completely failed to build a defence with centre backs.
I have never known any manager try to go a season without two if not three centre backs. It's one of the most important parts of any teams back-bone. He also failed to bring in a good quality centre forward and left central midfield thread bare.

Well I'm excited for the first time this season at the prospect things will improve.

It's a blood sport being a footy manager and part of the entertainment if us fans are not kept happy.

As a gesture of goodwill the board should extend the early bird pricing until after they have a new manager and war chest in place.

Fools feeling sorry for him he and all his staff will come out of this quids in based on his departure from Derby. He will put his feet up for the summer and then get big fees appearing as a pundit if no one else employs him.

The board will have made the sacking for the good of the club, they believe NC has not fulfilled the potential of the club, hopefully they will put that right

I never thought I would be pleased, having generally supported NC and the need for stability. But the run up to the Play Offs wore me down a bit, the first 20 minutes or so of the first leg perked me up again. But then the second league farce. And watching PNE demolish Swindon. I was thoroughly depressed yesterday. Can't say I am happy as such, disappointed that it has not worked out. But realistically, necessary.

Thought he would be given a run up to Christmas..
I really do believe that the players that he has brought in, when fully fit, will take us up. I felt that towards the end of the season, not only were the players getting tired, but a lot of them were not fully fit.
Oh well, hope Phippsy and co will come up trumps this time. Be careful what you tweet tho...feel that this move was also influenced by those on social media not being happy with Clough.
Let's hope we don't regret this sacking this time next year.

All fair comments HB. The thing is, a situation like this leaves many unanswered questions - would NC have learnt from last season? Will a new guy ask for time to get things right? And so on.....it's done now, I just hope the new manager is given resources if required. The squad is basically strong although it needs strengthening in obvious positions. Fingers and toes crossed HB.

Very poor decision, we can't just keep sacking managers when we lose a play off! Because we all know that we will never win the play offs, we would've progressed under clough. Bad times. Bad decision.
'because we will never win the playoffs' .. we have to start winning bloody playoffs.. Preston made Swindon look like a pub outfit.. what were we doing? Clough had to go because of his management skills not because of playoff results. half the bloody team have fallen out with him . he plays a totally different lineup every game. we have no centre backs and STILL no proper recognised centre forward. you can't play one up at the lane. .the fans just won't have it .. it isn't in our dna.. pinchy can complain about it all he likes but playing this style is no good in the third division as the players don't get the protection from the refs..
you can criticise me as 'massive' as much as you want but with respect to the teams concerned we should not be shitting our pants about Fleetwood and Accrington Stanley.. and i know they agree .. a couple of my mates support them btw

Good point maidmarion, we need the board to choose the next manager not the fans, although some good choices have be named. I also agree that the team was good enough with a couple of additions could have had a great challenge next season, but the board felt different.

Personally I would have sacked him, but would have the replacement manager ready and waiting to start. Hopefully the delay in announcing his sacking has been spent in achieving that and the new manager will be announced in days rather than weeks. We live in hope.

Only surprise is it took the board so long to sack him.His signings in the main have been ridiculous. The team he puts out week after week is set up to defend and when you play the likes of Alcock at CB , along side a myriad of others who are playing out of position your asking for trouble.
It's a poor division and we finished 5th bloody miles behind the top 4, Christ the rest of the teams must be really bad.
Looking ahead we need a change of direction, I believe we have half a dozen players worthy of the shirt and getting us out of div 3 next year, the rest get rid.Murphy, Done, Adams, Basham, Brayford, and...............struggling now mmmmmmmm make that 5!

In fairness, the new management will have a good squad at his disposal.
A new centre half,a new cm and an out and out goal scorer is all the new man needs Imo

What were Clough and Morgan and the so called fitness team doing? Why were united players blowing out of their rears after ten minutes on the pitch?

Depends on what he said at the debrief.

Finishing 5th without any centre backs was an achievement. I think we'd've been "there or thereabouts" as the cliche goes come Christmas.

Official statement says we're going to *start* looking. If that's true then it's a real balls up.

Consensus is : Let's see who's next - and that seems about right.

I agree IIYB, it's like a state of limbo, we are i the middle of change, the first (and I reluctantly say probably necessary) decision has been made.. but it's the first of two. The first is only correct if the second is. As you say, everything currently crossed.

Posted a week or so ago that the worst case scenario for us is a protracted search for a new manager. I hope they have someone lined up. I'm not surprised Clough has gone as JP has gone on record saying that the Prince is not a patient man and he probably reckons that even he, despite all his knowledge about putting a team together coming from fantasy football, would have realised we needed centre halves. That is what has cost Clough his job I am sure.
