Apparently we turned down soucek at West ham when we first got prompted
Think that was more of a target rather than turning down. We wouldn't have beaten West ham to his signature.

Those first 3 in the original post though. All 3 we were looking at and waited too long to be serious about signing them that we were no longer in good positions to sign them.

I think with Watkins though, had we got into Europe that season. Or Villa went down instead. (Ghost goal) We may have signed not only Watkins but Matty Cash.
Which may have meant we didn't sign Bogle and Lowe.

The summer after we finished 9th in the prem we were heavily linked with all the below players:

Emmy Martinez
Ollie Watkins
Matty Cash
Antonee Robinson
Eze

Instead we ended up with

Ramsdale
Brewster
Bogle
Max Lowe
Ollie Burke

We got relegated and Villa went onto what they are now and Robinson excelling in the Premier League and World Cup, and Eze a premier league champion.

Obviously money talks and we couldn’t afford the wages, but just goes to show how close we could have been to really establishing ourselves and having some top end players to build a team around. We’ll always wonder what if!!?

Got to admit, I thought we had bought well but put those lists into perspective. Watking and Eze especially. Well actually all of them would have either upgraded us an awful lot or got us a lot on sell on fee's

The only one I genuinely wish we'd not signed is Brewster, for two reasons. He was never played to his strengths and he was well over priced.

Good thread. These were interesting because it felt they were gettable and it wasn’t as if they were not a known quantity. I’d also add Eze when he was at QPR and we were in the PL and also Olise when he was at Reading both seemed players worth looking at.

Further back, Kevin Davies was a while at a Chesterfield just begging to be signed and had a great career at Bolton and Southampton.
Sabella..for another 50k you could have got Maradona.

That's often said, and it's before I really know much. I'm not sure it was really on the cards, everyone I speak to older then me says they weren't so sure it was a possibility. Nice story though and if true, what a miss.

I always wanted us to sign Koumas and Cameron Jerome in the mid 2000’s and though they were both destined to play for us at some point especially when we went up with Warnock.

More recently, you just knew that Eze and Watkins would turn out to be top players.

We signed Sabella for £160k and it was reported around the time that Maradona would've cost £400k. I guess we'll never really know the exact figure but we would've been stretching ourselves to pay the Sabella fee.

Pigenomics innit; twistng the facts to fit some S6 theory.

I'd always understood that Maradonna was £500k, and there was no way a Second Divsion side was going to pay that.

500k for us would've been massive as well, when did we first pay 500k for somebody? I want to say Brian Gayle but guess there was somebody before that?!

I remember us paying 175k for Mark Morris in 1989/90 ISH and that being massive for us, so 500k for Maradona in the 70s would've been insane.

Vinnie Jones, thought it was around £500,000, but it was £700,000. Marwood was signed about the same time for £350,000. So we splashed out a million in September 1990.

Remember watching Toney on loan at Northampton during a televised game, may well have been a 3rd round tie in January and he ripped it to bits. Looked a real handful and couldn't understand how he'd dropped to that level. It was the least surprising things ever to see him become such a good striker. We should've been all over it.

On a serious note, anyone who we did actually sign 2+ years after the rumour mill thread was made. At the time when the rumour mill thread was made and the player was value and not a waste of money
