Players who were shite and did nothing

Seconded, thirded and fourthed.

A worthy successor to Paul Williams (shudder) as the wankest Blades player in living memory.
I think Paul Williams was the only Blades player to have been sent off and we all cheered, (I think Wally Downes was another one).

Paul Richardson is in that club - jeered and cheered when trudging off but responded spiritedly with a protracted round of fuck offs to the Kop.

Maybe shows a shift in attitudes, many were disgusted with Hammond when he hinted at a similar show of displeasure, after two minutes of mock shock we all pissed ourselves at Rico.

I liked Deane, our best player over the last 30 years but he still falls under the category of "ordinary players who looked ok whilst playing for us in our unique Blaahhyydess Wahhyyy"

Maybe being a bit unfair, maybe he was a bit better than ordinary, but he wasn't absolute top notch quality all the same.
Great for us as he stood out but very ordinary everywhere else he played.

Deane has over 100 top flight goals. That's a bit better than ordinary, though I'd agree his best work was at the Lane.

I remember "I'm no quitter" Steve Bruce as player manager fouling a player. As he trotted over for the deserved yellow car, most of us were chanting "OFF, OFF, OFF".

To paraphrase John Motson, " A not quality tackle by a right not quality wanker tosspot player"

Lilian Nialis, I remember warming up on the touch line for a few games, then he was finally brought on one time , don't think I ever saw him again?

Derek Richardson
Sir Andrew Barnsley

Surprised no one has mentioned Nyron Nosworthy considering the stick he took.

Not true. Hodgy never made a comeback after being replaced by Hope. Hope's replacement was McAllister.
Oh....so sorry...i bow to your obvious superior knowledge. Having watched the blades home n away for more than 45 years i must have made a mistake. Silly me. Rather than rely on wickipedia i try to use my memory. I made a mistake on this occasion. My deepest apologies. Hope still lost his confidence and was replaced.

Touchy bastard with a shit memory.

Keep your hair on pal, I regularly get corrected by Silent Blade and Darren but I actually appreciate knowing the facts.

Correct, I watched Hodgy play in a reserves match shortly after he was dropped from the 1st team (last competitive match was the 2-1 defeat at Bolton (who finished bottom of the table) on 16th Jan 1971) but McAlister soon replaced Hodgy in the reserves team and was always playing for the reserves until he was given a league debut in the 0-0 draw at Ipswich . Hope was dropped along with Woody after the 4-0 home defeat to Derby the previous week. In Hope's first game for our reserves he injured his knee badly and was carried off. He was out injured for a very long time. Meehan (dont remember him) played in goal for our reserves n the first few weeks of the 1971-72 season until we signed John Connaughton from Man U. Connaughton was our reserves keeper for a year until McAlister's leg was broken by Rodney Marsh in October 1973. Connaughton's 1st team debut for us was in the 1-0 defeat at Liverpool (his dropped catch led to Kevin Keegan's goal). Hope returned to reserves action on the same day as Connaughton's debut at Liverpool. Connaughton got dropped after the 2-2 home draw against Spurs. Hope's return to the 1st team was in the 2-1 win at Burnley but he played only 7 more games before making way for new signing Jim Brown (easily our best keeper from the 1970s decade but a dimwit chose Steve Conroy in the 1970s team at the 125th year anniversary awards)

Ten Heuvel. I believe we paid a 'six figure' sum for him, all I can remember about him is he did a foul throw after coming on as a sub?!

Didn`t we have a bloke called Mike Guy play for us once, i could be wrong but the only memory i have is of a bloke with a rat of a `tash but no footballing remedies to offset it.

I believe we had someone on the training staff around that time too (or a bit later?) called Oscar Arce, always worth a chuckle but another possible reason why we were so shite back then.

Ah, Oscar Arce.
Sure many of you recall watching Baddiel and Skinner doing Fantasy Football League. One week they did a feature on Oscar Arce (for obvious reasons) and then the following week they showed a letter they'd received from a Villa fan and an actual match programme from a Villa game in the late seventies with the following team line up....

4. Jimmy Brown
5. Oscar Arce
6. Brian Hole

Excellent schoolboy humour!

Having googled it, it appears to be a Villa myth and those players (Hole was Barrie, not Brian) never played together - what a disappointment!
